Yes ofcourse the conversion rate varies among different groups. In my observation, alumni interviews are important for validating what the admissions committee might be thinking about the applicant. However, I have also closely seen cases where, when the admissions committee has already made up its mind regarding admitting someone, the interviewer’s feedback doesn’t matter much. This is normal because usually in schools where alumni conduct MBA interviews, the interviews don’t carry too much weight.

Hey, lyuk.
Allow me to provide a bit of clarity on the situation.
Insead has two annual intakes, in January and August, and they take around 500 students for each intake. Getting to the interview stage means that your profile is considered a better fit than most, but it doesn't guarantee anything. Also, factors like demographics, work background, ethnicity, round applied to, scores, and many other factors come into play in such a situation. For example, let's consider you are an Asian male engineer working in a tech company with an average GPA and GMAT and some good extracurriculars, certifications, and accolades. So now you may get an interview invite based on ECAs and Certifications, but anyone from a minority background with a better GMAT but average extracurriculars may have a better chance. To summarize, you can't be very sure whether it's one factor; It's always multiple things. I hope this helps.

Regarding the Indian pool, the INSEAD admissions committee has extensive reference points from candidates with similar profiles they may have accepted in the past and their experiences after. The adcom will invite candidates who they believe might be on the borderline to see the interview evaluations. This is my very personal observation after having spoken with many waitlisted/rejected candidates - if the adcom feels they are not likely to thrive in the INSEAD environment or after, the interview will not convert. The competition is high as well, but if a lack of seats is the only reason for rejection, then the adcom will encourage you to apply again
