Weird. I didn't think that getting waitlisted (deferred from ED to RD) was new this year. Maybe I read the blog post wrong. I thought it happened last year. I'm pretty sure that the ED bond is lifted if someone gets waitlisted too.

I think their point was that last year it seemed like a rare, one-off occurrence -- "We saw this happen last year, in December, and thought it was an anomoly" -- whereas now it's a regular outcome.

I can't find where I saw this, but I read a comment from CBS admissions that they don't move people from ED to RD, but just defer the ED decision, and will revisit that decision prior to reviewing the RD applications in December. However, given that in the deferral notification they reserve the right to defer to Feb. 1, I don't see how this isn't, in effect, moving people to RD. The only way it's not is if the ED covenant is still binding, which doesn't seem fair.

Interesting article about ED changes: https://essaysnark.blogspot.com/2010/10/ ... ss-is.html

Does anyone really use essaysnark as an admissions consultant? Doesn't seem the most professional.

Hm, I don't know anyone, but EssaySnark's posts always made me chuckle.

Ahh.. good catch, I guess that's why I failed Reading Comprehension. It looks like ED is not as good as it used to be.

A friend of mine has applied to CBS for the ED ..

He is Indian and studied in a University where the medium of instruction was English .
An an admissions event in Mumbai the admissions coordinator had specifically said
that TOFEL is waived for students if at university level the medium of instruction was in English .

Yet now he has just received a mail that he needs to submit his TOFEL score and now on reading the
instructions more carefully on the website it says that TOFEL is waived only in the primary language of the country and the university are both in English .

Is someone else facing the same problem and is this something that has changed this year because I know of a
few people from India in the previous batches who did not give the TOFEL.

This has come up previously, and the language of instruction of the applicant's university AND the primary official language of the country it is in has to be english, otherwise the TOEFL is required (this info is on the CBS website).

I too faced a similar issue. My app is incomplete as of now. I took TOEFL couple of days back and am waiting for the scores.. I feel I have put myself at a severe disadvantage as my app review is delayed by about a month..

I am new to the forum and would like to participate. I have applied for Columbia ED.
My application was submitted on 09/17 and have not heard from them yet.
GMAT: 680
TOEFL: 114
GPA: conversion killed my GPA, i mentioned on the optional essay, though. My gpa was a 68% for economics in Brazil.
I also have a Master in Corporate Finance in Brazil with 87,4% Brazilian GPA.
3 yrs work experience.
short term goal: equity research
long term goal: run family business back home (retailer).

Does anyone know how many weeks it regularly takes CBS to answer ED applicants?
Tks

My question is to those guys who got an interview invite. Do you have to schedule for the interview X days after or within X days of receiving the interview? The reason I am asking is that I want to go home to India for a couple of weeks. If I were to interview within 10 days of getting the interview, I am not going to go.

As far as I remember, TOEFL was waived for applicants who have cmpleted the degree from an institute where instructions is in English. I checked on Columbia website and was shocked to find that it is something else now. There is an 'AND' now. Is it a new criteria? There are no dates available before November and that would be disastrous for my candidacy.

I recommend that you write to the admissions office and get a clarification. Most probably you will have to write the exam, that is what I was advised.

Would not suggest asking the adcom as the website clearly states that the TOEFL will be required (I had to report the scores - same situation).

Well. That means I will have to register for TOEFL and no dates are available before mid-November. Can you someone please tell me if they changed the criteria? I thought I had ensured that I am not applying to places that require TOEFL as there were no dates available before Round 1 deadlines of any school. So, I am pretty sure that I verified Columbia's as well.

Does your application status say incomplete because of TOEFL scores? Mine did, so had to write.

Am reasonably sure the criteria did not change. Been following CBS threads here and elsewhere since July. In case it is absolutely essential to take it, try looking for centers near-about your city. You will need to travel a bit but you might get the appointment earlier.
Whats your GMAT breakup? If you have scored anything above a V35, you wont have any problems with the Listening/Reading and Writing parts of iTOEFL IMHO.

Pippi,

I see your status was updated to approved at J-Term.
First of all, congratulations! Secondly, were you waitlisted or did they just delay your response then your status went directly to approved??

I am on the waitlist and your input would be very important to me.
