Congrats to those of you invited to interview.

FYI, despite stating that attire is "business casual," I think more people were in suits than not when I interviewed. I'd recommend wearing whatever you'll be most comfortable in, but using "business casual" as a minimum standard.

While campus is great, I'd also recommend exploring Durham a bit for those of you who'll be interviewing on campus. From what I could tell, there are a lot of good restaurants in the area.

I interviewed in Chicago, and it was probably 50/50 professional/business casual. I wore business casual, and so did all the interviewers and alums there for the panel discussions. I can't imagine that it made a difference one way or the other for anyone.

That's sort of my point. There was some discussion of this topic when R1 invites were released. My message was meant to preempt those questions. I agree, as long as you avoid tuxedo t-shirts, leisure suits or other, obviously poor decisions on dress, you should be fine.

What about attire for the reception that Duke offers for visiting/interview students (specifically what do you women wear)? I assume it is business casual as well, but do people normally wear suits or is it more casual?

For everyone interviewing Saturday on campus, where are you staying? I still need a hotel or generous offer of a student's couch!

I'm staying at the Duke Tower. It's around $85/night. It's right next to campus and there is a free shuttle. I think a lot of people are staying at the Washington Duke Inn though.

Hi Everyone!

Long time lurker, in for R2, interviewing Friday the 25th. Staying at the David Thomas Center which is apparently right next to Fuqua, across the street from the Washington Inn. Cant wait to get to Durham! Anyone know any good places to go to and good places to eat in Durham? :)

My interview nerves are getting to me, so maybe some of you have some insight... Are interviews primarily for fit/ behavior? Or are interviewers also judging how successful they think your goals are etc? Or maybe that is up to adcom to decide prior to interview invites? Any idea what percentage of invited interviews are then accepted? I know there are statistic, but I believe those include people who self initiated interviews.

Thanks in advance for any replies! Good luck to everyone!

Have any of you who have been admitted been contacted by your "Fuqua Buddy?" Warning: don't abbreviate "Fuqua Buddy."

My Fuq-buddy emailed me, and we scheduled a time to talk on the phone, which we did about a week ago. She's very nice and we chatted about things for a good half-hour or so.

Hi All,

Congratulations to all interview invites. Good luck.

One quick question: Is it all over for others who haven't received a invite?

Any insights will be really helpful.

Thanks.

It's a pretty standard behavior interview. No trick questions. The interview is pretty relaxed and conversational. I think we just want to get to know you as a person. Don't be nervous and don't sound canned. For interviews, I concentrate on the key points I want to get across and practice a few times. DON'T MEMORIZE your whole speech!
Good luck.

I don't remember any of the questions I was asked, other than something like: "tell me about a good manager/leader you've worked with and what made him/her effective."

The admissions office gives the student interviewers a sheet with a number of questions on it. How closely your interviewer stays "on script" is probably just a function of their style and the flow of your interview. My interview ended up being much more of a conversation than a Q&A.

Two quick questions -

1) Has anyone who was not invited when the invites for R2 were sent on 4th Feb heard anything from Fuqua since?

2) Can anyone with some historical background let me know if there have been cases when someone not invited initially was invited for an interview later in the same round?

Thoughts anyone...????

Well, I was not invited on 2/4 but I received an email this morning saying this:

Thank you for your recent application to The Duke MBA at The Fuqua School of Business. We have been able to open additional interview slots in Durham and would like to invite you to visit campus to interview. We apologize for the short notice, but hope that you will be able to come to Durham the week of February 28 to experience The Duke MBA firsthand. You will receive an email within the next 24 hours with a link that will allow you to schedule your interview, as well as a class visit and a tour of the facilities.

Thank you again for your interest in The Duke MBA and we hope to see you soon!

So this is great and not so great. I want to potentially attend Fuqua, so of course, I want to go to campus and check everything out and make my case for admission.

But 13 days notice is absurd. I live in California. And, oh yeah, I have a job, that I've been taking time off from to visit other schools that are also on the other side of the country. Giving me a specific week where I have to be anywhere is just not ever realistic for the constraints of my job responsibilities. Making this trip may be difficult to impossible.

I'm clearly going to have to contact admissions to discuss this.

Do any of the Fuqua people on this thread know anything about invites going out after the official date? Should I assume that I didn't make the cutoff in the first batch of R2 applicants, but then they decided they needed to look at more applicants? I'm just trying to figure out what to think about this opportunity. I'd like to think that I have a real shot at getting in, but it certainly seems like they didn't originally judge my application to be that competitive.

But, not to skip this part: yeah! Fuqua invite!

If I were you, I'd try to not over think it. If you got an invitation to interview, then I think you've got a pretty good chance of being admitted. If you can make it to Durham, even on short notice, you should definitely do so. You may love the town or you may hate it, but either way that impression could help you decide where you want to be next Fall. Plus, if you're on the bubble with admissions (and I wouldn't assume that you are), traveling across the country on short notice certainly shows initiative and a strong interest in Duke. If you can't make the trip, which would be totally understandable given your circumstances, I'd simply contact Admissions and request an interview with someone on the West Coast.

Congratulations on the invitation and good luck.

I got an invite too. I'm wondering if this is a systems issue. Another possibility is that their yield from round 1 admits is abnormally low this year.

I got notified on the 4th, like many of us, and I didn't get the scheduling email until Feb.8th. I'm interviewing on feb.19th. So basically 11 days to get everything scheduled. I've flown from L.A. to Durham before (to visit Duke), and it's not a fun flight. However this time I'm driving 11 hours from where I am now to make the interview. Some people fly in from across the globe. It's just par for the course in my opinion. You got an invite dude, you're chances of being accepted have just dramatically increased from where it was yesterday, congrats :)

Fair enough. I guess most people didn't get much notice. It just really surprised me given the flexibility and advance notice involved in Kellogg's interview process. Of course, they interview nearly everyone, so it's a different animal.

But sure, I get what you're saying about just having to go with it. I'm a bit worn out from last minute trips to 2 other campuses, but I guess these are good problems to have.

Anyway, admissions replied immediately to my concerns with a date for an interview in my city. That's exactly what I wanted. I'm sure it would be great to go to campus and see everything and make my case, but at this point, I'd rather go check out the campus on admit weekend, if I get in.

I did get invited and only received the scheduling email two weeks before I'm interviewing as well, as I will be business traveling the following weekend (other option). Just the way it goes. Like a second job.

Congrats to those who got interview invites yesterday.. Maybe adcom had not gone through all the applications by Feb 4.. I hope mine is still in the to-review pile :)
