Everything I've heard to this point is that Duke adheres to the notification schedule pretty closely. IIRC, that was the experience of all the R1 admits.

That said, you could kindly and carefully ask if an expedited decision would be possible. I wouldn't press too hard though.

Had my on-campus interview today. Campus is gorgeous and the Fuqua building is large/relatively new. My interviewer was extremely friendly and outgoing. Questions included:

-Walk me through your resume, especially highlight your motivation for your career, EC activities and Undergrad school.
-Why Duke?
-Give me an example of a time that you led a team
-What is a failure you had?
-What is your biggest regret?
-What questions do you have for me?

The interview was VERY conversational, I didn't at all feel like my interviewer was trying to rush into the next question.

I'm super impressed with the facilities and the students I met there. Good luck to everyone who is interviewing!

Have what could be a bit of a strange question. My interview is tomorrow, and I was wondering about this: I've got accepted by two other schools, with aid offered, but both want a response and/or deposit before Fuqua's decision date of 25 March. Fuqua's always been the dream school for me, so I'm actually kind of worried and confused now about what to do.

Would it be a terrible idea to mention this to my interviewer tomorrow?
First of all, congrats on the admits..!!

Now to answer yr queries, if I were you, I wouldnt discuss my other apps with the interviewer, unless specifically asked to do so....there is just no need to bring up a subject that can be interpreted differently by everyone...this happened with me for the texas-mccombs interview. We started talking about other schools and why I picked them and so on. In the end, I got a ding, which was least expected.

about the decision deadline, so far, with the experiences of R1 and EA applicants, it is noticed that Duke always released all decisions on the deadline only. Not even a single day before it. (Double check the date on which you received yr interview decision). that means that you only have 2 options now - (a) push the other schools for an extension, or (b) pay the deposit at one of the school as a backup. In the end, you only lose 1500 USD (Im guessing tht is the deposit amount) which is not a bad gamble to play if you think Duke is worth it. think abt it.

i wouldnt suggest contacting Duke for an earlier decision coz most likely you wont get it (you have much higher chances of getting an extension at other schools. i extended my deadline for Oxford and they were happy to do so.) and will end up probably with a negative impression. Dont take the risk. Its not worth it.

hope this helps.

All the best for yr final decision.

Eventually decided not to bring it up at all - will just have to wait it out I guess. Thanks all :)

Interview went well - I think. Was fairly informal, my interviewer was very excited about his first visit to India, and I have a feeling I may have rambled a bit. Let's see!

I always thought that if you get an interview invite you're pretty much on equal footing with your competition/peers. I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that 35-50% of people interviewed just don't "fit" because they don't align with the schools culture, focus, or are just plain awkward. It's hard to imagine a school would accept a person with a 780 but doesn't quite "fit" over a 650 gmat who is "perfect" for the program.
First of all, I never implied that GMAT was the all-important stat. At this stage, we all know GMAT score is more of a check the box kind of deal. I think the overwhelming focus on apps is going to be on work experience. A full-time waittress (met one at a school event) applicant that has the "perfect fit" is never going to make it. Applicants that already have promising careers are very rarely going to be awkward and most likely, they will have done enough research to not to come across as brazenly pompous (though I'm sure it happens often enough) or something to that extent to severely damage their chances. Do all of the Top 20 programs have Type-A bankers as part of their program? Fit is really an afterthought.

Like I said before, your work experience is probably going to out-trump anything you can get across in your interview. Some interviewers don't even take notes. How can you say everyone's on equal footing then? I'm not saying the interview is not part of consideration, but once again, just a means for elimination. I think of the school interviews like the lunches and dinners involved with job interviews. As long as you don't weird anyone out, you're probably ok.

Hi, I'm invited to Duke admissions event in my home country (R2 candidate, invited to interview).
The agenda includes QnA with alums, EducationUSA presentations and after all this - the interviews!

From the invitation e-mail it seems that a higher ranking official from the Admissions Office himself will attend the event. Is it possible? How common is this? Will he conduct the interview himrself?

Anyone here has any experience with a similar Duke event?

Also, it seems that the event is partially intended for the already (R1) admitted students, and from what I know, at least 2 more locals were invited to interview. Any suggestions on how to socialize with them?

From past-time statistics in our country it seems that Duke is not playing with the interviewees, and 100% of the invited are admitted. I'm a bit excited, I think it's one of the best schools there (only FT program, no evening / PT. no "internal rivals" of any kind) How not to blow up the opportunity?

Can Fuqua MBA help to switch to IB from a non-related field? Any thoughts are welcomed.

Step 1: research the program. Duke is a great school, but it has several programs outside of the traditional on campus full time program.

Hey, all the best for the result. I have my interview on 22nd. Would you mind sharing your interview experience in detail? Questions asked, etc.

Thanks a lot

Thank you very much for this helpful and constructive comment. What I meant is that I won't have Part-Timers competing with me for the same jobs, attending the same events - like it is, say, in Chicago. As for Chinese campuses - and I'm not aware of something dramatic going on there - well, frankly, I don't consider them being actual competitors.

Anything to add on the merits of questions asked in my post?

The usual:
Why an MBA?
Tell me about your job.
What do you remember most fondly about your college?
How would your classmates from college remember you?
What is unique about you?
How would your friends describe you?
What do you do in your free time?
Who are your role models?

Ended with asking me to give a 30-second pitch to Liz Hargrove on why I should be accepted to Fuqua, and then any questions I had :)

Good luck with your interview!

Just had my interview recently! It went really well! My interviewer was the best interviewer that I've had at any school and he was a 2nd year student! The whole interview felt like a great conversation where I didn't realize till afterward that he actually DID ask me the questions on his list. He knew my resume and had a similar background to me as well as the same future goals. Instead of asking me the traditional "walk me through your resume" he jumped off with asking specific questions about my current role and then my entire background came out naturally from that point. Instead of asking me a pointed failure question he asked me if one of my projects failed while I was talking about my current role. The whole conversation flowed naturally and we took the whole hour (I think he was late for his next appt).

If I get accepted I want him to teach me how to interview like that!

I spent two days at Duke and was extremely impressed with everything that I saw. It was an incredible visit!

Ok, agree with all of the previous posters about the Duke interview experience.

Bottom line: conversational, relaxed, fun...but you can still get rejected if you have a great interview. We won't know until the decision deadline. Good luck to all the R2s.

Bottom line just know your resume and why duke. I think I over prepared by using the clear admit wiki questions, but that's just me. Conversational, relaxed, etc. Although I agree with mbagirl, a good chunk of us (50%?) are still going to be rejected.

I don't know if what I am about to say will help you but ... Duke is actually a "rolling admissions" school. The deadlines are really just to keep folks like us on task. You will receive an answer 4-6 weeks after you submit your application. I don't know if that is still inside of the other deadlines for you but, there you have it. I hope this info helps.

Good luck with your interview!

This is not true for the full-time, 2 year program; it might be true of some of the other programs (EMBA, cross-continent, etc). For the full-time program the admissions office sticks very closely to their defined dates for both interview invites and final decisions.

OK ... I was not going to say anything, but you are the second person to make a similar remark. I’ve only repeated what an admissions counselor has personally told me. Admittedly, I am applying to the Weekend EMBA program.

Forgive me if we are working off of different sheets of music here. I didn’t think there would be a difference in this regard. Either way, thanks for clearing the air ... Cheers and best of luck in your MBA endeavors.
