For those admitted students I highly encourage you to come to Blue Devil Weekend next weekend if you haven't scheduled to do so already. We have an incredible weekend planned to give you a more in depth look at the program, clubs, and social opportunities in Durham. Also, many of the really nice apartment complexes students tend to live in offer generous discounts that weekend as well (Station 9, Alexan Place, Alexan Farms, Garret Farms, etc.). For those unable to attend, there is a facebook group in the works for admitted students that's really helpful in getting your questions answered, find roommates, link up with classmates over the summer, etc..

Did I mention it's 75 degrees down here today and will be in the 80s next week.

Hey Fingers,

What kind of discounts can we expect on apartments? I don't think I'll be able to attend BDW, but I understand those complexes are required to hold whatever deals they offer open for two weeks or so. Thanks in advance.

They vary from year to year but typically from what I've heard the monthly rates tend to be a bit lower (10 percent or so) and I can tell you they waive application and amenities fees which add up to real MBA budget money. Additionally apartment complexes typically maintain occupancy rates near 95 percent and procrastinating weeks beyond BDW could mean you find yourself on the wait list.

Bottom-line no need to panic but it's certainly in your best interest to lock down rates and apartments during BDW.

Also, there is a brand new apartment complex being constructed next to the Lofts at Lakeview (a nicer version of Station 9--where most students live) and 0.25 mile from Fuqua, don't too much about it but expect they'll be at BDW too. Just another option.

I have a question regarding the BDW, at what time does it officially start on Friday (11am or 6pm ?)

The short answer is that the first event begins at 2 p.m. on Friday. I think you'd want to be there by 6 p.m. on Friday at the latest.

I'm sure I'm probably missing a few events, but this is what I've got...

Friday:

2pm coffee chat
3pm optional activities (clubs, etc.?)
4pm open house w/ research centers
6pm kick off & welcome
7pm Fuqua Friday Activities Fair & Housing Preview
9pm Discover Durham (aka going drinking and ride a mechanical bull)

Saturday:

9am Dean's welcome
?am Sit in on two classes
?pm lunch with student host
1pm Dan Ariely Presentation
2pm Career Mgmt Center Presentation
3pm career panels w/ alumni and students
7pm Dinner (another opportunity to drink, er um, bond w/ your classmates/experience Team Fuqua)

Sunday:

10am Apartment Tour

I was admitted in R2 and got my packet yesterday afternoon. They said to expect merit scholarships decisions in 2 weeks, which should mean tomorrow. Just wanted to see if anybody had already gotten a call?

The scholarship, if any, should be in the packet

question for international admits from previous rounds: Can international students use student loan on the declaration of finances? (I mean the Coastal Federal Credit Union loan)
Also, let's say that I have applied to the loan for $72,535 (per/year)- total cost of attendance. Do you think that I should still show some other source of personal funds? Would it be necessary, or say would it make the whole visa process easier? I'll eventually discuss this with someone from the school but just wanted to hear you guys' take on this one...

Sure, it was a tough choice but here are some of my reasons: (and this is not a knock on Fuqua or any other top program. Frankly, if it came down to it I would be overjoyed to attend any one of the top MBA programs in the U.S.)

• 100% Case Method
• Strong consulting placement
• Strong GM school
• Slightly smaller class size than most other top schools
• Very family friendly community
• I love the facilities/atmosphere
• Among the best ranked and highest regarded career centers
• Consistently rated among best teaching of top schools
• I connected with students better than at other schools
• Reputation for most rigorous curriculum of all the top schools

The funny thing is that some of these same reasons that pushed me toward Darden might keep others from attending. Once you have to choose between top MBA programs it all comes down to FIT.

Darden just fit me better than the others.

Just got back from Durham for my fuqua interview. Very pleasant experience. Had a great time. Even got a chance to hear Jamie Dimon speak which was super cool.

Pretty much the typical questions.. Tell me about your background, walk me through your resume, why an MBA, why duke, describe a time when you failed. I interviewed with a second year student who was extremely nice. Very laid back and informal interview.

Haven't chimed in here in a bit, but something new has come up.

I've been thinking more about trying to do the Cross Continent program, after getting waitlisted from the Daytime program in R2. My specific job is not necessarily what I want to do after b-school, but I love my company, and I'm optimistic that my company will find some good use for me as I go through this program.

So, I'm thinking about it. The exposure to a bunch of global markets would be really great, and if my company supported it, would allow me to learn a lot more about our operations in those markets.

Anyway, the total amount of posts about Cross Continent on GC is pretty small. Can anyone speak to their knowledge of this program either here or in a PM? It's definitely a different animal than a traditional MBA. I'm just wondering about how some people have put it to use in their career and the value they got out of it. Any info would be appreciated.

I attended an infosession that covered the Cross-Continent program before. It definitely has an interesting format and program setup that is unlike any other MBA program out there. I remember being taken aback by the tuition cost but have since learned that it's not unreasonable when compared to executive MBA programs, which the Cross-Continent shares many similarities with. There was a current student at the session who spoke very highly of her experiences, true global network, and also being able to finish the program in 16 months. I think if staying at your current company is a viable or preferred option, I see no reason why you shouldn't consider the CC.

Thanks for sharing that with us. If you don´t mind....which were your options and in your perspective what negative aspects made you turn down the other schools? thanks for the valuable info!

If you plan on staying with the same company and are doing an MBA only for intellectual learning, then CCMBA is for you. If you want to switch careers, you should go with full time MBA. CCMBA gets no career support at Fuqua. They are not even allowed in the student clubs or participate in any of the club events, same goes for other non-Daytiime MBA programs.
