I share your sentiment unknownvirus but I think we're going to have to wait for another week or so atleast. I guess the adcom will review the waitlist this week and possibly take a decision in the next?

NO NEWS. Memorial Day Weekend just passed so it must have been pretty quiet.
Other universities mentioned in this thread that might shake up the scenario of some Fuqua Admitted Students:

Kellog: June 6th (R3 deposit deadline)
Stern: June 1st (R3 initial notification)

What other University??

Asked Fuqua today when will an admissions counselor be assigned who will help navigate the admissions process during the summer months (the email received said by the end of May). The answer was that we should receive an e-mail from a counselor in the next week or two.

Yea I agree. On that note, did the adcom offer any information about the role of the 'admissions counsellor'? How is he/she going to help? Whats likely to happen?

hey guys- I got in today also.. rd 3 waitlister. honestly i wasnt even thining about duke at all for the last week i wrote them off pretty much once i was waitlisted. never sent an update, nothing. DOnt think im going to go. I think I know what reaction I am going to get when I pose the next question... but would everyone here pick duke over oxford and cambridge? Honestly, I thought duke was my top choice but when I got waitlisted I decided to take the trip to the UK for my interviews at oxbridge. I have to say i was completely blown away. by oxford in particular. that place is seriously a world class institution if ive ever seen one, I dont care abuot the rankings- that place is like a kingdom. its like a kingdom full of intellectualls just DISCUSSING random stuff... I love that. had never been there... came back knowing thats where i want to be. so now that im into duke, i really dont care- someone else can take the spot.. im pretty sure im going to oxford. unless somehow i cant get funding or a visa- ha.

do you guys think thats crazy? ive gotten mixed feedback because obviously duke is ranked higher, its american blablabla... but i really dont care very much about therankings.. went to one of the best american schools undergrad.. im not convinced duke is any better than oxford in fact quite the opposite. Feel free to express strong opinions in response, would love some advice of people who are in the loop, so to speak.

thanks guys

Where are you from and where do you want to live. Every mentor that I've ever had, all top mba's wharton/harvard/columbia/kellogg etc. have always told me the greatest value of the mba has been the network. The classes and professors will basically be the same at any top institution.

So to answer your question, you want to go to the school that will give you the best network. If you are from the states, going to Duke will give you a far better network than Oxford. I don't think one should view their MBA as a 2 year program but a life long branding and network. If you plan on living and working in the UK, Oxford is probably the place to be. If its else where, I don't really have the knowledge to comment but you get the point.

Another thing to consider is look at the career reports from both schools and compare them to the types of jobs that you want after school. There could be a difference and there could not be, who knows until you check.

That is how you should answer your question though, not based on what has nicer facilities or more "intellectuals".

I agree with Ke18sb. I dont think you're comparing Apples with Apples when you're talking about Oxford and Duke. They are two very different institutions and have two very different MBA programs. Personally, I'm not too hot on the rankings and use them merely as a guide. However, what matters is which school aligns more with your goals and aspirations. Off the top of my head, here are the things I would look at:

1) Post-MBA Location: Do you want to work in Europe/UK or the US?
2) ROI: The Oxford degree is 1 year (if I remember correctly) whereas Duke will be 2 years
3) Employers: As ke18sb suggested, do your potential employers come to both campuses for recruitment?
4) Prestige: This is a HIGHLY subjective aspect of the degree and deeply personal. If you're happy with Oxford (as you've clearly said, you are) then thats all that matters. You liked the place and the people - thus, you'll be content with your decision even 10 years down the line. I think thats great!

Overall, I think either school is a fantastic choice and you're lucky to have your pick between them. Good luck and do let us know what your eventually take!

I agree with the networking comments made. You want to ground yourself in an area that's going to provide the most support for you long-term. That said, I've spent a lot of time in the UK and can definitely see the appeal, and I'm sure you could find Oxford grads to network with in the States, just not as many as other schools.

Anyway, congratulations guys on getting in!! This is earlier movement than last year - here's hoping for the rest of us.

MattNY, have you gotten in elsewhere and are waiting on Duke or is Duke the only school you applied to?

eh, Im going to have to disagree with ke18sb actually but i appreciate your advice becuase you make valid points, all of which certainly matter to some extent. mattNY thanks buddy! i have found this whole mba process to be so gruelig and monotonous.. and overall just drainng. Maybe i havea few schools im into but honestly i went through so many rough patches where I almost just walked away and decided to keep working. I have friends who went to awsome schools, awesome jobs and literally are getting rejected from EVERY MBA program they apply to. Its crazy. The selection process these days is not what it used to be thats for sure.
redjam you are pretty much spot on, all of your points certainly hold true, except maybe the relying on the recruiting bit. I wont get into my thoughts on that now cause i will bore you... but on the oher hand I think a lot of that stuff is bs. Yes I am from the states.. been in new england all my life went to what most people believe to be the #1 ivy in the country for undergrad, economics, bulge bracket i bank right after school etc etc. went through all those motions. Frankly I do tend to gravitate towards situations people and places that make me feel excited, intellectually stimulated, and just happy to be there. I chose my undergrad the same way- i felt awsome just being there i cant explain it but its a premonition or a connection, whatever you want to call it. a vibe. I really think looking at the "career stats " of each school and comparing rankings etc etc is totally dumb and a waste of time because 1) it bears NO guaranteee that you will follow whatever patterns you extract from your intense analysis of these (self reported) statistics, and b) sure, those guidlines might work for some poeple... in my opinion they work for the run of the mill, average b schooler who needs a job delivered to him on a platter even though it may not be his true calling, but hey, its easy and less work than going after something on your own. anyone who is a serious contender for a top firm, job, career, what have you will end up getting that because he went after it, and because his stats and history speak for themselves. so to be honest... visiting yale som's one decrepid building that sadly represents the entire business school and is at the center of arguably the most dangerous, depressing town the on the east coast, vs strolling the 800 year old cobblestone streets of oxford where everyone from royalty to radiohead is passing by.... those intangibles are HUGE in my opinion. You are going to work the hardest when you are inspired and happy. YOu go for it. I find it hard to believe that many kids feel the urge to really "go for it" in the same way after a couple years in new haven ct. "going for it" for them probably looks more like a swan dive off the tallest building in som... oh right, theres only one building. ha. what a nightmare. obvsiously im halfway joking about all this so dont get mad. Mostly jokiing, but kinda serious. anyway, good points for sure. yeah i initialy wanted to come back to new york but im open minded. i may want to stay in london for afew years.

one point that I have to say I totally disagree with ... and Im assuming you are american? If you go to europe you cant escape the fact that there exists a certain perception of americans as being somewhat arrogant, especially in terms of the way we view ourselves compared to the rest of the world. I;m totally american but I can see how this is kind've obnoxious. if you already lived and worked and schooled in the us (probably on the same coast to boot) why on earth would going to DUKE with all the seme types of people give you a better network? totally disagree. This is becoming a global world and one of the reasons i think im going to go to oxford is becasuse i dont want to be one of those close minded americans who went to school here all my life while the rest of the world is broadening their horizons. I think if theres any shot that you ever want to work in london or elswhere out side of new york, it looks good to have that global education. oxford is no community college - its some of the smartest people in the world. I hate to say this on the duke forum, but the kids at duke aren't exactly einstein's on the whole.. they are cool and down to earth and really well rounded normal smart kids dont get me wrong... but in terms of intellectual ability I don't think you get much better than a place like oxford or obviously harvard yale etc.
just a few thoughts. basically thinking out loud but again anyone can yell at me anytime. :) an yes, i do indeed realize there are some very smart people at duke. If i choose to attend for example, that would be one right there. so yeah, I definitely don't like to generalize or stereotype. AS YOU CAN SEE hahah

All valid points. I like your thought process and I think you'll do very well at Oxford/Cambridge. I also agree that expanding your network by going to a new country is a good move, increasingly so in our 'flattened' world - which is why I'm moving to the US! :-) In the last 2.5 decades, I've lived/worked in three different regions of the world for substantial lengths of time so my move to the US is my way of expanding my network in another continent.

As for your rebuttal on the recruiting point, I agree with you that if you've got the drive and tenacity to pursue your dream firm, you'll be able to get into it from any respectable school - in any country in the world. And as you rightly pointed out, the journey may be easier in some than others but its still possible.

Now I hope the rest of us waitlisters get a call as well!
