If we interviewed back during the open interview sessions, is it really a straight wait until the R2 notification date? That's kind of of hard to stomach. Does anyone have a feel on how heavily Duke weighs the interviews? Seems like they're one of the last elite schools to even require interviews for admissions. Is it still an afterthought?

I don't know for certain, but I've wondered the same thing. Take R1 applicants for example. If you applied in R1 and you were invited to interview on campus, you'd interview over the January 14-18th weekend. That gives the Adcom approximately two weeks (maybe less) to reevaluate your application after your interview is completed. That seems like a relatively short period of time to further evaluate what I assume is a large pool of applicants.

I also wonder if admissions decisions won't be made prior to the last weekend of the month, with calls possibly starting as early as Friday the 28th. Of course this is all just speculation on my part.

I would speculate that they it's more of a pass/fail thing. They are probably looking to weed out anyone that just bombs the interview or doesn't make sense, while also making notes of anyone that really impresses in the interview. I'm thinking that if you do fine in the interview, then it won't dramatically change your chances. Just my thoughts based on timing.

I think you're right MBADAWG. The one group for whom interviews may be more important, are applicants whose first language isn't English. The interview may be more important for those applicants because it gives them an opportunity to show that they can effectively communicate while at Fuqua. Again, I'm just speculating here and I'm sure there are folks who are strong in one area, but may raise questions in others. For those applicants, the interview may be an opportunity to address those concerns.

Speculating again, but I disagree. I think Duke and other similar schools such as Ross and Kellogg are very concerned about fit. Duke and Ross are also concerned about yield. I think the interview is a way to judge interest and fit. Many fit related questions came up during my interview with Fuqua.

W103,

I think we are on the same page to a certain extent. When I say pass/fail, I mean fit or no fit. I think they want to see two things: Purpose (Why MBA, Why Duke?) and Personality (Do you fit the culture?).

Well put on the "fit" ideaology. I'm somtimes shocked at the different schools that people apply. If you are a good fit at Duke or Northwestern, chances are you aren't a good fit at Wharton or Chicago. It will come across in your essays unless you are the master BS'er.

Ha ha, I must be an amateur BS'er since I'm waitlisted at Booth and have applied to Ross, Kellogg and Duke, where I fit better.

Hi all,

Quick question for you. I looked all over the website to see if there was a specific time that the application was due, and I couldn't find anything, so I figured it was 11:59 like with most school. My second recommender submitted his recommendation around 6pm yesterday and hit "submit" around 11pm. I then logged in again to check my status and there was a message referring to the 5pm deadline. I then checked this board and got confirmation of that. So here are my questions...

1) How strict is Duke about the 5pm deadline?
2) Where did you see the 5pm written? I look all over the website and didn't see anything. The only place I saw it was after I logged onto the "Apply yourself" site and it was in what looked like an advertisement bar on the left.

Am I the only person who was blind enough not to catch this?? Argh.

Any input on the deadline question would be very much appreciated. I am going to be really upset if my app gets pushed back to round 3 because of an honest mistake and missing the deadline by a few hours.

Thanks!!

I can tell you for certain that for Duke, deadline for the recommenders is I think a week or two after the applicant deadline.

Well I just got up the guts to call the admissions office, and the lady I spoke with said that they close the online portion at Midnight. 5pm is when the office closes, and any materials they need in the office are due then. But she seemed pretty confident that I am in for R2. So thank goodness and fingers crossed!!

yea, you should be fine I guess....if the admissions office specifically said that midnight is ok, then its ok....As for the recommendations, they have a more relaxed deadline, so thats not a problem also....

all the best....

Happy New Year Everyone! I am back in civilization with a running internet connection. I just updated the Roll Call . For everyone in R1, I did not move anyone over to dinged yet, I will do a 'comprehensive update' once all decisions for the round are released. Good Luck for all the upcoming interviews

Hello Guys,
Out of a little separation anxiety and against my better judgment, I reread my submitted essays for Duke. I was shocked to find that I made a couple of grammatical mistakes in the essays. In fact, I was so panicked that I initially posted this message on some other thread, though got some good advice there. . Not my best moments, I know.

In your experience, how bad is it to have such errors. I think there are a total of three with a missing article at one place and extra one at another ( so total number of articles is correct  ) and one tense error. Should I take any action regarding it or just sit tight and pray for the adcoms slight leniancy? Thanks for your input.

Don't Put your SC rules in here buddy! Relax..its pretty human to make errors when you are writing on your own. you want to show that you have a business mind not that you are a english laureate. Rite!! (a total of three with a missing article at one place and extra one at another... Wow)! So simply wait for the interview call ..if you have not made a logical error :)

PS: I am not an adcom member..
