I know Duke is one of the schools that allow alumnis to "recommend" applicants. How important is that in the application process? I don't know of any schools that do that (at least they don't directly ask for it). I wonder whether lacking any recommendations will go against me. I do not have any strings to pull from Duke U.

For my fellow R1 applicants who were accepted - FYI I received my admissions packet in the mail yesterday. I'm the guy who lives about 30 min away from campus, so you can probably expect yours soon too.

I didn't have any strings to pull from Duke either and I got in. I don't think it matters much at all.

And thanks ebonn! Hopefully I'll get my package by the end of this week.

edit: My package arrived. International location.

My admit package came today (Boston).

No Scholarship, but they do give you a little bag and some decals and such.

the package came via US Mail.

I withdrew from my Texas offer, so count me in for the class of 2014!

Hey guys -- would wearing a tie and jacket to the interview be considered overdressing? I know Duke suggests business casual in their interviews. I'd appreciate your input.

Go with the tie and the jacket if you're more comfortable wearing a more formal attire. They won't penalize you for overdressing.

Good deal. I feel like I'm more in the zone with more formal attire for some reason.

Thanks!

I am an R2 applicant who hasnt been invited for interview.

Though this is not a denial of admission, it seems pretty much like one based on what I read from last year's applicants.

Are there any R2 applicants here who were in a similar position like mine and been invited to interview ?

Not neccessarily, someone who reached out to me this year, applied EA without interview. got waitlist decision, invited to interview for R1, and got accepted at R1.

Hi Asimov,

Thanks for your reponse. It does help to see that I still have a chance with Duke. I am an international applicant , female, with 7 yrs of experience in IT including 3 years of managerial experience with international exp and decent extra-curriculars. I worked very hard on my Duke application(like most of us) and Duke is the school of choice for me. Will you be able to connect me to the applicant whom you had mentioned in your post. I would like to find out if he/she had any application strategy post Duke's inital decision to have converted to an admit or if I could get any tips on how to approach this stalemate scenario now.

THanks!

Finished my interview with Duke on Sunday here in Shanghai. Was quite surprised at the number of interviews here in Shanghai alone...seemed to be at least 20 people present for just Round 2 alone. Absolutely no surprises from the interview, and it was split 50/50 between her (an alum) asking questions and me having the chance to ask her questions. I tried my best to express the values that Duke holds dear like teamwork, collaboration and a global perspective, and tried to show through that I had done my research on the school. though she did not specifically ask for any classes or professors or alumni I had spoken to or anything like that. This was my last interview for the season, so I was extremely relieved to put it behind me and feel pretty good about it. Best of luck to those who have not yet interviewed.

I did it with the Adcom in Beijing, He seems really nice, and our conversation is relaxing, Let's cross our fingers for the results.

BTW r u Chinese?

I also had the interview with the adcom in Beijing. The interview was friendly and conversational. The admissions director had clearly spent a lot of time reviewing my file, and the interview seemed much more focused on whether or not he could picture me at Duke. Fuqua makes a big point of finding people who can fit in with their Team Fuqua philosophy, and I thought that really came through in the interview.

We had an afternoon session with Q and A with alums. All in all, it was a really nice event. I was very impressed with the strengths of the other candidates with whom I spoke and pleased to see that people from across many different fields had received invites (off the top of my head, I remember a dentist, a sports marketing professional, a manufacturing professional from an SOE, a handful of auditors from the Big 4, not to mention finance and consulting types).

Like the person in Shanghai, I was struck by how many people had received interviews (19 prospective candidates came to the Q and A session, and there may have been others who couldn't stay).

Good luck to everyone who interviewed!

So you interviewed with Russell? I don't think he did any actual interviews here in Shanghai, must be more alumni with time on their hands down here

And no, I'm an American, but based in Shanghai. There was another prospective American student who interviewed as well, but the rest were all locals (about 20).

Then, count you in, there are three prospective American applying in Beijing & Shanghai, I never thought about that many interviewees either. It is said that only 20-30% of those applicants will be admitted. Let's hope for the best then.

I am Chinese, with some years of living in U. Personally, I prefer to speak with Adcom, instead of Chinese Alum. I've heard some people were challenged pretty badly by Chinese Alums.

Gemini, if it helps, I am a R1 applicant who was not invited to interview in that round but got an invite in the next. I had given up all hope since I misread the "Not invited" status as a ding. However, I was pleasantly surprised when I received an invite around the 7th of Feb. And I hadn't done anything at all with respect to a post-"Not invited" strategy between the time I received the intial decision in December and the invite in Feb. Having said that, the other person referred to in the previous post may have had a strategy; so if you do get his/her contact information, by all means, contact him/her.
