Hi, I just graduated at the age of 20 and I’m planning on giving GMAT, but I just attended the ELEVATE YOUR MBA APPLICATION by GMAT club, and she told me to first dedicate 2 years on building experiences and then apply for MBA colleges. So is it really needed for me to acquire experience for applying to harvard, considering I’m 20?? Guys please consider helping me out. Thanks
For Harvard Business School (and other top MBAs like Wharton, Stanford, etc.), work experience is not technically mandatory—you can apply right after undergrad. However, in practice, the average HBS student has 4–5 years of work experience, and admissions committees look for demonstrated leadership, professional maturity, and clarity of career goals—qualities that are very hard to showcase without real-world exposure.
At 20, here’s how you should think about it:
Direct Admission Programs: HBS has the 2+2 deferred program, designed exactly for candidates like you—high-achieving college seniors with no full-time experience. You apply now, get admitted, and then work for 2–4 years before joining.
Regular MBA Route: If you wait and gain 2–5 years of meaningful experience (professional roles, leadership in projects, measurable impact), your application will be much stronger. Without this, you’ll struggle to show the maturity and employability Harvard expects.
