Hey! 700 is a decent score and yes a 730+ on GMAT Classic (675~685 on GMAT FE) would have helped to make your profile standout. R1 and R2 have pretty much equal chances and 700 is worth applying with. Few of our aspirants got in even with a 680~690 on GMAT Classic. Quick question - have you completed your CA? At IIMA, your work experience will make a lot of difference and well you articulate it in your resume. Can your share some details about your work experience?

Vaishali2004
So IIMA applications have started. I have a GMAT score of 700 (Q45 and V40). I got to know recently from the ISB admission committee that the reason they did not select me was because my GMAT score was not upto the mark. MY undergraduate and CA scores are very subpar (around 50% average). I want to take the GMAT again but I wont be able to take before R1 at IIMA. Wanted to understand from you is 700 a good score in IIMA PGPX or is IIMA too very particular about GMAT like ISB is? I am worried that if I do not apply in R1, there would be very limited seats in subsequent rounds. Wanted your thoughts

Vaishali2004
Hi, I am having a question and was wondering if anyone would be able to help.

Vaishali2004 I saw this message late, but I hope you get to see my reply.

I am pretty sure the reason for rejection is not just the score, because one of my mentees (also a CA) was accepted to ISB and IIM A with exactly that GMAT score. I think it is very nice of the B-schools to have feedback sessions with the rejected applicants, but I know that often important gaps in the applications are not highlighted due to lack of time and unfortunately the applicants get an incomplete picture. You are welcome to contact me if you want to understand what may have gone wrong with your ISB application.
Apart from that, the 700 is a good score if you have solid work experience and can grab the attention of IIM A professors through your interview skills. But if you do not have the necessary fundamentals, you may not get ahead this time as well.

Best wishes

How to approach B-school essays/SOP?
Short answer: They should be like hashtag#SSRajamouli movies’ trailer leaving the admissions committee craving for more

ESSAY TIPS
0. Understand the Question asked and its purpose
1. Narrate a genuine story from your professional journey (avoid personal stories as much as possible)
2. Set up the context with an introduction paragraph not too long
3. Detailed body and precise conclusion
4. Avoid fundamental mistakes such as spelling and grammar
5. Write in an active voice and in 1st person (trust me I have seen people who refer themselves in 3rd person)
6. Keep in mind the word limit but provide details
7. Essays give a peek into your profile, and use that to set up the interview panel
8. Send a message about what you will bring to the Institute/cohort
9. Avoid run-on sentences, keep them concise, and convey the story clearly
10. Insinuate the reasons/qualities "why they should offer you a seat?"
11. Do not project subjective and cliched qualities. Have unique stories
12. Get your essays/SOPs/resumes/LOR reviewed......

Your profile is excellent. But need to have a strong thoughtful answer in essays/Interview- Why MBA, Why now. Else as per me your chances to get selected pretty high.

Thank you for sharing your detailed profile for evaluation.
Academic Performance:
Your consistent performance in 10th and 12th grades is impressive. Although your B.Tech percentage is on the lower side, your exceptional GMAT score of 760 can help balance this aspect of your profile

Work Experience:
With ~8 years of experience in the Ministry of Defence, you bring unique and significant government sector experience. Your roles in management and HR, combined with your achievements and responsibilities, reflect strong leadership and project management skills.
Your involvement in high-impact government initiatives and liaison with multiple ministries showcases your ability to handle complex and large-scale projects, which is a significant advantage for both ISB and IIM A PGPX

Achievements:
Receiving a commendation as the fastest and youngest officer highlights your dedication and effectiveness in your role. Overhauling the Defence Medical Depots and preparing the Transfer Policy demonstrate your capability in driving systemic changes

Extra-Curricular Activities:
Your volunteer work and contributions as a Quora writer add a well-rounded dimension to your profile. These activities demonstrate your commitment to social causes and your ability to influence and engage with a broader audience.

Chances of Admission:
ISB:
ISB values diversity and unique experiences, and your government sector background can add a distinctive perspective to the cohort. Your high GMAT score, combined with your leadership roles and achievements, position you as a strong candidate for ISB. Ensure your application essays clearly articulate your career journey, achievements, and how ISB fits into your long-term goals.

IIM Ahmedabad PGPX:
IIM A PGPX looks for candidates with substantial work experience and leadership qualities. Your 8 years in a high-responsibility role, coupled with your strategic initiatives and liaison work, align well with their criteria. Your academic performance in B.Tech might be a slight concern, but your GMAT score and professional achievements can offset this.
Next Steps:
Application Essays:
Clearly outline your career path, achievements, and future goals. Highlight specific instances where you demonstrated leadership and made a tangible impact.
Explain how the MBA from ISB or IIM A PGPX will help you achieve your career objectives and how you can contribute to their programs.
Letters of Recommendation:
Choose recommenders who can provide detailed insights into your professional achievements, leadership skills, and potential. Ensure they highlight your unique contributions and impact.
Interview Preparation:
Prepare to discuss your work experience, achievements, and reasons for pursuing an MBA. Practice articulating your career goals and how the MBA will bridge your current experience with your future aspirations.
You have a compelling profile with significant achievements and leadership experience. Focus on effectively communicating your journey and aspirations in your application to maximize your chances at ISB and IIM A PGPX.
Best of luck with your applications! If you need further assistance or have any questions, feel free to reach out at https://www.preppie.in/ (Email - [email protected])

Hey! That’s a pretty strong profile with good acads and a stellar GMAT. For IIMA, you have a high chance of getting an interview call. For ISB, you will have to put up a pretty strong case around your post MBA goals and how ISB will help you in achieving those goals. This is something that you will have to articulate well in your essays as well as interviews and this will be a deal-breaker in your case coz otherwise your profile is pretty strong.

On the GMAT Exam (10th Edition), many test takers aimed for a score of 700. On the GMAT Exam (Focus Edition), a score of 645 is equivalent to a 700 due to the new score scale. Since they are both in the 89th percentile, they represent the same level of performance. Therefore, while scores may look "lower" in comparison, they aren’t. The GMAT Exam (Focus Edition) is scored differently, and business schools know this when reviewing your application and paying more attention to your percentile ranking.

Hi,
These are the questions about the GMAT Exam scoring and evaluation which we had taken up recently in a Live QnA to get clarity on where things are headed from the official GMAC sources.

Two things are quite clear here: 1. The schools are using the concordance table to compare the GMAT scores from the previous and the new version (if and when they do compare). 2. Percentiles are the way to go now, read your GMAT scores in percentiles not absolute values, the schools are also doing that.

Here's the QnA for your reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUJX1zgYqhk

All the best!
