Could you please share the extempore topic of the people you spoke with?
’m sorry i don’t remember a lot. Anyway if a topic is done once, they take out that chit.

one of the topics I remember was around the EV Push which Indian Govt. is doing, if it is sustainable or not?

another tip around the interview, panelist won’t ask you even a single question that you might have prepared (based on the sample sized of people I had a chat with after the interview), question like why MBA, why PGPx, why IIM A, post MBA plans. The interview is really general, just back yourself as much as you can, don’t be flimsy on your opinions, they’d pressurize you to do so but back yourself no matter what.

I mean ofc prep these questions but I don’t think you’d be asked, know your CV and Essay well. The company I work for is currently based out of Singapore, they ended up asking me the capital of Singapore, how did come to existence, who built it, etc. That’s how general the interview can go.

Uh oh! I wonder how to say anything about such a topic for two minutes.

One of the extempore topic was in the lines that: Are AI robots better suited for romance for the kids or say youth?

Oh. That's strange. Could you recall some of the questions you got? Seeing everyone's experience here, I wonder how to prepare. Those interviewed in Delhi, Ahmedabad said they were asked why MBA, why IIMA, post-MBA goal type of questions. Mumbai folks saying it didn't happen with them. No pattern at all.

Plus the extempore topics (AI girlfriend, manufacturing vs service sector, Air India-Vistara merger etc.) making me a bit nervous now. Has anyone got any tips on how to deal with extempore topics you know nothing about? Has it happened with someone that you didn't know anything yet could make a conversation?
PrateekKhare21
I didn’t get even a single question from my CV or Essays, although I was expecting probing questions from my CV, as I am from marketing sector. Instead, generic questions were asked. It was an absolutely normal conversation, not like an interview. Once it was over, I was puzzled like anything, as I was expecting a grilling session!

I disagree that 600-800 candidates sit for interviews in each round. IIMA’s annual report details everything about the PGPX admissions. Not more than 1200 applications are received in total every year. Out of which around 600 candidates interview for a particular academic year.

Posted from my mobile device
One of my friends interviewed and mentioned that there were over 70-80 names for that particular location in Round 1. Even if we estimate an average of 50 candidates per location each day, with 8 locations, that totals 2( Interview day) * 50 * 8 = 400 people interviewed in Round 1, and this is a conservative estimate.

I find it hard to believe that everyone who applied received an interview invitation.

Considering two factors:

Round 1 typically accounts for 25-30% of the total applications for the entire cycle.
Not everyone is called for an interview. Even if we assume a 50% interview invitation rate, which is still quite high, the numbers don’t add up.

A total of 1200 application seems significantly lower than the actual numbers, unless there’s a specific mention of this figure in a report. Could you please share the link where the 1200 number is mentioned?

Or Maybe this year number are high in R1, which is prove my assumption wrong.
That's an incorrect estimate. I got interviewed in Kolkata. I saw the list of interviewees. There were hardly 20 candidates over the 2 days.

You could look up Page 25 of the 61st IIMA Annual Report to get the exact figures.

This isnt the exact case. Its not that Delhi people were asked specifically abt the MBA aspects. For my interview they didn’t asked any questions abt MBA, they started with my work exp a bit some technical stuff of my work asked me to plot some curves and god knows why they suddenly jumped to asking calculus like derive& prove some trigonometry equations, some curve equations, differentiation topics, Kirchhoff laws.

They usually give you some minutes to formulate your points. Its more like to & fro convo you will say something they will come up with counter and then the discussion starts. I prepared on some current affair topics but current affairs hardly I guess was asked there specifically all the topics were multi-faceted. SO basically the major step is to take the first step and break the ice rest can be handled as discussion continues ahead. You don’t need many points you just need few points that you can justify because once the discussion starts you will be away from your own formulation in order to answer their concerns.

Hi , so for everyone whose interviews are scheduled over the next two weekends, I have only a few things to say. From what I understand, IIMA is expecting its candidates to be prepared for uncertainty. Why MBA, what next, why IIMA- these questions are something that you have to prepare as it gives fundamental clarity. However, the extempore is what takes you by surprise. Through the extempore, the panel is trying to determine if a) Is the candidate spontaneous b) Is the candidate confident about their background c) How does a candidate problem-solve out of a situation

Overall, I feel that IIMA is judging a candidate very holistically. They want to know how aware a candidate is about their own journey so far. How easily a candidate can buckle under or respond to pressure and if what they claim in the essays or CVs is indeed true or not

So, depending on the panel, you could be quizzed in multiple ways. But, no two PGPX interviews are the same. So the only thing that a candidate can do, is reflect on their journey up till now, have a delivery style that easily communicates their method of decision making. What you can do in the in the extempore is- before you are interrupted(which you will, surely), just try to put your points across in the most clear manner and explain your reasons

If anyone requires any support, feel free to DM me

just put the topics you know from this year into chatgpt, give it relevant info and ask it to make new topics based on the topics above. I did the same activity using previous years topic, will paste them below if I find it. It’ll give you 10 such topics and then try to speak on all of them, topics you get stuck on, ask chat gpt to give you both a for and against view and learn how it builds.

My prep on topics was writing down the three major points in first 20- 30s and then try and build sub points around those points in the time left.

Thank you for the lead. I saw the report. So 76% of the 900+ people who applied that year were invited for interview. Out of the 701 interviewed, ~22% were given admission. I had no idea that as many as 76% get shortlisted. I'm amused, and also grateful to know. Dilli door hai.

A good approach that works for a lot of folks is to firstly have a clear opinion on the topic. Avoid playing both sides. There is no right or wrong perspective here. Have 3 solid points ready in the first 30 secs which supports your perspective. If possible, try to articulate points in a way that demonstrates why you choose one perspective vs the alternative. Post that it’s more about the conversation with the panel and logically navigating that. Feel free to reach out to Preppie (https://www.preppie.in) for a detailed conversation

General will effectively have 65-75 odd seats. You can proportionally distribute across the rounds as per past trends. Now keep in mind diversity factor also in this.

In one of the webinars for PGPx aspirants, someone asked how many seats there will be, and IIMA said there'd be about 150. I'd suggest you attend their webinars and ask this question there. One webinar is today itself at 8 pm. Webinar details on PGPx website.
