somewhat unconventional profile.

Your academics are strong (88/88/83) and being a Marine Engineering Gold Medalist from MERI Kolkata definitely stands out. The profile also has variety: merchant navy → PSU bank → Ministry of Defence, which makes you more differentiated.

Extracurriculars especially youtube is good.

The biggest issue is probably career coherence.

What is the underlying story here? What is the long-term direction?

Without a convincing narrative, this can feel random rather than intentional. You will need a strong answer for: Why these transitions? Why MBA now? What exactly are you trying to become post-MBA?

Second, your work experience is somewhat breadth-heavy but may look light on depth/leadership unless there are strong impact stories. For example:

Did you lead initiatives in the PSB role?

Any measurable impact in lending/operations/audits?

Stakeholder management?

Team handling or process improvements. These matter a lot.

GRE 322 (161/161) is decent and keeps you competitive.

If you are targeting top 1-year programs, my honest take:

One thing I would strongly push you on is post-MBA clarity. Generic goals like consulting/management may not land well here because your profile already has multiple transitions. The post-MBA story has to feel believable.

Hi abhi90962,

There are definitely several positives in your profile. Your academic background is strong, and a gold medal in your undergraduate program adds a meaningful differentiator. A GRE score of 322 is also competitive for both IIM A and IIM B.

The primary concern the admissions committee may have is the presence of three distinct career paths — Merchant Navy, PSU Banking, and the Ministry of Defence — within around six years of work experience. The transitions appear quite different and may raise questions around career direction and long-term goals.

You will need to build a clear and compelling narrative that connects these experiences — explaining the motivation behind each transition, why you are pursuing an MBA at this stage, and how it fits into your future career plans.

Your post-MBA goals will be particularly important. Clearly defining the roles and industries you are targeting, and demonstrating how an MBA will bridge the gap, will strengthen your application.
If positioned effectively and supported with a strong interview narrative, your profile has significant potential.

All the Best!

Happy to connect if you’d like to discuss your profile in more detail.

At first I thought 88/88/83 were sectional scores of GMAT 😅

Regardless... very decent profile highlights. Focus on your more recent experiences and how they inspire and support your candidature for MBA.

GRE score may be below the average but still it would be sufficient to apply and stay hopeful of admission

Hi abhi90962,

Interesting profile! While your undergrad acads and extra curriculars are good, you need to work on your story line and join the threads to connect with your post MBA goals. Think around - how did Merchant Navy to PSB and then GoI help you:

  • Grow in terms of process & People management skills
  • Improve in terms of your ability to solve difficult problems and manage complex stakeholders
Your narrative should tie your strengths while also explaining your motivations for the switch.

All the best with your applications!

Regards,

Lakshya Admit

Why do you want to do an MBA considering you are already AVP in Wells Fargo and you are in IB?

I want to grow further into leadership roles. Have never officially managed teams and worked in the capacity of individual contributor. Want to learn managing and also pivot into mid-senior to senior roles quicker

The profile is very much favorable.

GRE, even though it is lower than their last year’s lowest, shouldn’t stop you from applying and hoping positively.

IIM-A has offered admission to lower GRE scores than 319 in 2026 intake.

I think the statistics keeps varying and diversity factor should give you a chance to be positive after applying.

You can DM for a detailed discussion.

This is actually a strong profile. You can give a shot without improving GRE but if you can improve the score then nothing like it.

The 6 years in investment banking, AVP designation at Wells Fargo, people management experience, Economics background, and a reasonably differentiated.

Your Economics Hons GPA of 3.67/4.0 is strong academically. The Head Girl experience adds to a long-term leadership narrative rather than leadership suddenly appearing in the story.

The elderly smartphone initiative is probably your most interesting extracurricular. If it has real impact, measurable outcomes, and sustained involvement, it can become a strong differentiator in essays and interviews. The modeling work is nice to have but will likely be a secondary talking point compared to your professional and social impact work.

Also, admissions teams will want to know: What is the next logical step post MBA.

While AVP is a good title, schools will look beyond the designation. AVP at wellsfargo is inflated title. They will want to understand:

Team size managed

Revenue or portfolio impact

Process improvements

Stakeholder influence

Promotions and progression

If you were to retake the GRE, I'd aim for 323+. If not, I would still apply because the overall profile is strong enough to be taken seriously.
