Dear @Anujgupta2018,

Below is my evaluation of your profile

Academics: Good; you will get close to maximum points as far as this component of evaluation is concerned.
Work Experience: Average; Big 4 after CA with 5 years of exp in tax dept. is something that on prima facie not distinguish you from the other CAs who will be applying with you. You need to demonstrate how you have been able to create impact in a differentiated way compared to your peers. Last year I worked with someone who had pretty much similar background as yours but then he talked about a project where he worked closely with Uber India to structure the taxation norms around gig economy workers in the country. That ways he was able to prove that his experience would contribute to the P2P learning of his classmates at ISB who intend to join any Gig economy-based organization (extremely common these days) or even start their own venture that had an aspect of freelancers.

You will need to retrospect about your work and figure out such stories that do not seem obvious to the reader (aka adcom).
Adcoms have an impression that post CA mostly in the initial few years people work in individual contribution roles. So the notion is that they don’t have a lot of people management skills. To counter is thought, do try to explicitly give examples of projects where you managed / led people.

Extracurriculars: While representation at State Level does give a proxy that you were good in the sport back in the day, readers would be interested in understanding whether you still have passion for the sport and if yes, in what way do you still pursue it (Note that they don’t expect applicants to progress to Zonal – National levels if they have done something at State level once)

Depending on when you are planning to take the GMAT, do give yourself good 18-20 days for your application (specially considering this year’s essays are quite intense).

I am an ISB alum,CO15, and have been guiding applicants in their admission journeys for more than 6 years now. Feel free to register for a pro-bono profile evaluation session with me via the link - https://calendly.com/crackadmission/profileevaluation if and when you require it.

Cheers and Wishing you all the very best!

Thanks for this

To add above, i have been the top performer in the team and have been working directly with the director and partner of the firm on many crucial assignment which include assistance in listing of shares to merger of listed company and handling the execution on my own. Plus i am also handling a team of 3-4 folks who report to me. Whether that would have an extra weightage in lieu of team work or leadership front?

Plus i have been doing freelancing, whether that would have a positive impact or negative as it is out of the job and my employer does not know about it

Anujgupta2018

5 years is a long time to be in one domain (Taxation). I suggest pondering hard on how to demonstrate growth progression if your entire time at the Big 4 was spent in tax consulting. Since you mentioned later about your experience in M&A advisory, make that pivotal to your story (I am sure there will be many more such experiences which can stand out. Identify which ones!). That shows progression. Unpack your experiences and reconstruct your stories to show that working on high-impact projects has given you much more hands-on experience and opportunities to engage with industry leaders, more experiential maturity, and greater capability to contextualize business problems than most CAs who apply.

You did not mention your goals, but if you craft your experiences well in the application, transitioning from Big 4 to Big 3 would seem like a valid and well deliberated aspiration.

Your ECs are dated. For Finance professionals seeking MBA, showcasing a balanced right brain thinking and search for meaning beyond the numbers is also important. Take time to reflect and recall more impactful initiatives.

Aim for a strong GMAT score. ISB will be seeking reasons to accept you rather than reject you. You are a pre-tested high-potential candidate with prior business (and finance) exposure. The key to securing the admission now lies in effectively managing the application and interview process.

Best wishes

I hope you are planning to retake the GMAT. No amount of good storytelling can compensate if you fall short on academic thresholds because the MBA/PGP is ultimately a quant heavy and analytical program. A GPA of 7+ from a state government college is alright as long as you can stand out on other aspects.

In what appears to be the most overrepresented work profile in India (IT), you must demonstrate a profound understanding of the industry you catered to as a business analyst at TCS (Finance and Accounting Functions of Retail Customers). Provide examples of how you comprehend the business implications of your work, showcase your progression year on year, and highlight gaining incremental responsibilities through promotions, leadership, or cross-functional stakeholder management. Demonstrating a mature perspective on the relevance of your work is crucial for your chances at a top-tier PGP.

I would not suggest settling for anything less than a 730 (Balanced with Q48+). The higher, the better. Keep in mind that, at the end of the admissions process, unless you have differentiated yourself with your background and experience, you may just be a statistic for the evaluation committee, and they may prefer someone with stronger academics or a better GMAT score for your demographic pool. This reality check in advance will help you prepare effectively and face challenging competition.

Consider updating your extracurricular activities with more recent initiatives (there must be some, I am sure!).
You did not mention your goals. Demonstrating thorough research on your goals will make you a stronger candidate.

Feel free to reach out for a candid discussion.

You already have a PGDM and you did not mention ISB on your list of schools. Kindly post on other forums as your question is not relevant to this group. Happy to advise regarding your profile if you reach out directly.
