Why did you leave your job in Jan and what have you been doing since https://gmatclub.com:443/forum/memberli ... Rishab2409?

I am assuming " The Perspective Club" is not a fulltime thing.

I have been preparing for GMAT cause with EY it was possible to study. EY would take roughly 14+ hours a day including weekends.

Initially I had planned to do GMAT, alongside office in March 25 but because of this pressure, I had to drop the plan, and the only way to make sure this works was by leaving EY.

So, what's the news on GMAT then, since it's been six months now?

Hi Rishab2409,

While you will aim to maximize your GMAT score (GPA being on the lower side) in the coming weeks, here are somethings you need to keep in mind if you are applying to ISB or other top ranked full-time programs:
  • Excluding your article ship, your experience with EY is for 21 months. Ideally, Adcoms will want to see a greater depth in terms of your accomplishments, leadership, & progression.
  • The story arc - from a conventional audit role to Management consulting needs to be stronger. Think about the skills you can connect to your target career -> problem solving, client stakeholder engagement, & business impact.
  • Reposition your gap to demonstrate reflection & learning.
  • Explore how you can leverage your extra-curricular activities to demonstrate impact, both in - people leadership & delivering excellence.

All the best with your journey! Feel free to reach out.

Regards,

Lakshya-Admit

The transition you want to make Moving from HSE to strategy consulting is possible, but it won't happen just because of the MBA. (Easier said than done.)

As a fire safety officer the nature of work needs to be translated into elements that would convince both the admissions committee and consulting recruiters why your operational and safety experience translates into solving business problems. If your experience includes leading cross-functional initiatives, managing crises, influencing operations, or driving process improvements, highlight those heavily instead of positioning yourself as a pure safety professional.

At 4.5 years, you're also on the younger side for IIMA PGPX. That doesn't rule you out, but leadership maturity and impact will be scrutinized more closely.

My biggest question would be your post-MBA narrative. "HSE to consulting" is too broad. Be specific about why consulting, what type of consulting, and how your experience in energy and industrial operations gives you an edge.

Shell has downsized in India, not saying they shutdown but the hiring hasn't been that great. However, it's a different case all together if you want to enter consulting via the domain experience.

Hi,

Your profile is strong overall—excellent academics (Gold Medal, 9.0 CGPA), a competitive GMAT Focus score of 695, and a differentiated background at Oil India Limited. ISB looks like a realistic target with 4.5 years of experience.

For IIMA PGPX, your work experience is on the lower side compared to the average class profile, but it shouldn't be a deal breaker. Transitioning from HSE to strategy consulting is definitely possible, but you'll need a strong career narrative, measurable leadership impact, and solid case interview preparation. Focus on highlighting business impact rather than just technical HSE responsibilities in your applications.

All the Best!

Happy to connect if you’d like to discuss your profile in more detail.

Hi dahiya101,

Your undergrad and GMAT score put you in the race. While I don't have the context around your leadership & co-curricular activities outside of work, here are some things I would like you to consider:

  • Folks from PSU background have strong foundation in people & process optimization as the nature of work is very Ops heavy. Given your strength, how will you connect the dots to your post MBA career (strategy consulting)? Think about business impact, stakeholder engagement, & adopting a "systems view" to solve problems.
  • Have you considered working on a function change (say Corp planning) within Oil India to help you build a stronger case for your transition to Strat Consulting role?

Feel free to connect and discuss.

Regards,

Lakshya-Admit

Beware of Energy practice roles in consulting as short term goal... 😅

It might put in a tough spot as there aren’t ample openings in the field to absorb so many.
