Your next switch could be a principal , group PM or director depending on company you could target.

Seems to me that your wanting to do an MBA is more emotional than aspirational. You have always wanted to do it but life happened so you are considering if can give it a shot at it now.

Given you already are at ISB placements range. Don't expect a senior leadership role will land because of ISB PGP tag atleast not right after the college.

At this point what is it that you miss that MBA/PGP could offer ?

Furthermore the cost you would incur is not just tuition fee but also the opportunity cost of salary forgone. Which in your case probably 80 lakh plus.

I won’t say it’s an emotional decision, I feel that to transition from being a product person to a business person in tech, an MBA makes sense for me.

Also, given the rapid changes in AI and technology, the way products are built and businesses are run is evolving quickly. I want to take a year away from the day-to-day corporate routine to reassess the direction I want my career to take and build a broader business perspective.

From a general global MBA perspective, I don’t think I’m late. The bigger concern is that the global economy is in turmoil.
So, my question is not whether an MBA is the right choice. Rather, it’s whether ISB is the right MBA for what I want to achieve.

I am a Senior Product Manager with 6 years of experience (and by the time I enter business school, it will be almost 7 years). I currently earn around the ballpark of ISB’s average placement package and work at a top HealthTech MNC.

I have wanted to pursue an MBA for a long time, but life happened. Is it too late for me to get an MBA( from India) ?

In the short term, I am looking to transition into senior operator, strategy roles at Big Tech.

Would ISB be the right choice for someone in my position? Will I be too old for ISB if I’ll be around 30 by the time I join?

Also, how difficult it is for candidates with relatively higher work experience to secure placements at ISB?
1) You are NOT LATE but you are not early either.

2) The best options that can give you the desired transition are ISB/IIM A-B-C-L

AVerage placement at ISB is 37 lacs and so is at IIM-B and A

Question: Have you taken GMAT Yet?

If you have and you have a score then it would be more relevant to discuss the options that you may have open to you.

*_How difficult???_*

It’s not easy.. but nothing good is easy these days. But it’s not extremely hard as well if you have clear intent, a fine GMAT score and right information at the right time.

Top IIMs have about 10% selection rate as per RTI information. It’s this hard statistically.

For any further discussion: DM me 🙂

Good, that's right way to think.
Now the next 2 aspects I would Nudge you towards
1. Finances : before making the call make sure you are ok with both program fee and salary forgone (time away from family too)
2. PGPX, EPGP, MBAEX, ISB PGP these are alternate options that I would also Nudge you to consider

One more thing right after these programs don't expect a director level role. It's not that it's not possible it's just that the place committee or placement cell doesn't target for an individual.

Each of the programs will equip you with knowledge of various functions of business and the value translates over time.

The point I want to make is that do MBA for right reasons and in your case salary is out of equation.

I am seeking a candid profile evaluation for the PGP program at ISB. Given my demographic and background, I would love to get your insights on how my current profile shapes up and what GMAT Focus Edition score I should realistically target.
My Background & Profile:
Demographics: 31-year-old Male, Indian
Academics:
Class 10th: 10 CGPA
Class 12th: 89%
Undergrad (B.E.): 68%
MBA (Marketing, Tier-2 Indian B-School): 8.2 CGPA
Work Experience: 6 years of professional experience within the Market Research industry, showcasing consistent progression and domain expertise.
GMAT Status: Yet to take the exam.

I am specifically targeting the Indian School of Business (ISB) for a second MBA to pivot/accelerate my career.
How does my profile look for ISB PGP program? What is the ideal GMAT score I should aim for to truly stand out and mitigate any academic gaps? Also does ISB consider students with prior MBA degree and around 6 years of work experience?
Thanks in advance for your guidance!

Hi

Yes, ISB considers 6 years of experience and an MBA as a prior degree. However, the burden of explanation lies on the candidate to justify the second MBA in such a short time. Please do not discredit the prior institution to justify.

Your GMAT score should be 665 or more to be on safer side specially because your Undergrad score is slightly on lower side. (not-so-good observation from your scores is that your academic scores from 10th to undergrad show a declining trend)

I wouldn’t suggest that you put all your eggs in just one basket i.e. ISB. I think you must explore options of IIM A/B/C executive MBA program which are full time, 100% placement provider programs.

You may get in touch for more detailed discussion on your suitability for these programs if you like

Hi WorkDrop,

Without additional details about your professional background, it's difficult to provide a comprehensive profile evaluation.

That said, having a prior MBA is not a problem. ISB and other leading one-year MBA programs in India, such as IIMA PGPX, IIMB EPGP, and similar programs, do consider applicants with a previous MBA. The key question your application will need to address is why pursuing a second MBA makes sense at this stage of your career and how it aligns with your long-term goals.

From a test score perspective, I would recommend targeting a GMAT Focus score of 655+ to remain competitive for these programs.

All the Best!

Happy to connect if you’d like to discuss your profile in more detail.

Sunny3897 Hope you are doing great. Every student's MBA journey is highly individual. Last year, I mentored someone who joined ISB with 14+ years of experience and even secured a 50% scholarship, which shows that there are cases where both the school and the applicant recognise that they have something meaningful to offer each other. But I will be very frank. Older applicants, not just at ISB but at most B schools with a relatively younger average age worry about being pushed outside their comfort zone when they have to work and study alongside a much younger cohort. Adcoms think about this too when evaluating applicants with significantly more experience. They consider whether such a candidate would genuinely feel fulfilled within the average cohort. They look for signals that the applicant would fit well within the cohort. Some of my past mentees who joined ISB with relatively more work experience did mention that they felt older, and at times felt that certain job opportunities seemed to be geared more toward candidates with comparatively fewer years of experience.

I do not think 30 is late for ISB. But you do need to do your own due diligence and set clear expectations about what you want from the program. If you feel that ISB will significantly boost your visibility, strengthen your network, and improve your value in the job market, then I would say that is absolutely worth investing in.

Best wishes

Hi dahiya101 Yes, you can definitely move toward strategy or consulting if you put your mind to it. It is not rocket science, but you have to be smart enough to know how to grab the attention of recruiters (or the adcoms before that).
To put it very simply, you should know how to speak about your work projects like a consultant or from the point of view of someone who understands strategy work. If you come across as an average PSU candidate with an operations-heavy/maintenance background, it will not help your case. Talk in terms of identifying deeper process weaknesses within the organization, redesigning workflows, and aligning commercial objectives with long-term operational excellence. Also be extra prepared for consulting type interviews.

You also need to understand that straight strategy consulting roles do not always happen immediately after business school. In that case, you should have a clear plan for using your existing expertise as a stepping stone toward more core strategy roles over time.
You may also move closer to strategy pre-MBA by looking for opportunities in startups that are ready to bet on you. That would be a solid way to showcase your potential to business schools later.

I wrote a piece on this. This could help. INSEAD: Stop Pitching MBB Goals Like Everyone Else : INSEAD

Modest undergrad grades would require that you target 685+ on GMAT WorkDrop.

Make sure you justify the need for 2nd MBA in ISB's second essay (that need should not be just the ISB brand).

In the short term, I am looking to transition into senior operator, strategy roles at Big Tech.
This really needs to be thought through Sunny3897. Not sure if many Big Tech firms visit ISB for pure strategy roles.

On another note, Product Management is actually quite a highly sought after role post MBA. Since you are already a Product Manager, a role that definitely does benefit from the skills that one acquires during MBA, the panel would be naturally curious to know why you do not want to continue as a Product Manager; after all, strategy is a key component of a Product Manager's repertoire as well.

Post this query in GMAT related forum and I will explain there in detail.

Hi everyone!

I’m currently pursuing a BMS (Bachelor of Management Studies) in Mumbai, India, with an 8.9 GPA. By the time I apply, I’ll have leadership experience in college (PR Director and International Programs Committee), marketing internships, volunteer experience, DELF B2 French, and I’ll be taking the GMAT.

Initially, I was certain I wanted to pursue Luxury Brand Management. However, after speaking with several professionals, I’ve been advised that it’s quite a niche specialization, especially considering the current job market. I’m now trying to understand whether it’s better to specialize immediately or keep my options broader.

If I study abroad, I’ll primarily be targeting HEC Paris, ESSEC, and NUS. I’m also considering ISB in India.

I’d really appreciate insights from people who have studied at these schools or work in the industry.

1. In terms of ROI, career growth, and long-term opportunities, would you choose ISB or schools like HEC, ESSEC, and NUS today? Why?
2. Given the current global job market, would you still recommend studying in France or Singapore as an international student?
3. If the long-term goal is to work in the luxury industry, is it better to pursue a specialized Luxury Brand Management program, or study a broader management/marketing program and transition into luxury through internships and work experience?
4. Is it realistic to break into the luxury industry after graduating from a top Indian business school like ISB through internships and relevant work experience, or does studying in Europe provide a significant advantage?

I’d really appreciate both success stories and cautionary experiences. Thank you!
