I am looking to retain an admissions consultant to guide my application strategy for the Indian School of Business (ISB) PGP program for the upcoming intake. I am explicitly targeting the Round 2 deadline and would appreciate an honest evaluation of my profile, competitive advantages, and potential bottlenecks.

Please find the summary of my profile below:
1. Academic Background
10th Standard: 89.00%
12th Standard: 75.34% (Acknowledged dip; looking to mitigate via a strong GMAT score)
Undergraduate Degree: Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) from Mumbai University (Tier-2 College)
Graduation GPA: 8.6 / 10 CGPA

2. Professional Experience & Work Profile
Current Tenure: 2.5 years (approx. 30 months to date; will be ~36 months by Round 2 submission in December)
Company & Designation: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) — Assistant Systems Engineer
Core Responsibilities: Working as a Front-End Developer for TCS BaNCS, a flagship core banking suite. My specific module serves one of the largest corporate banking clients in the Middle East region.
Impact Note: While my corporate trajectory does not feature accelerated title promotions due to rigid organizational timelines, I handle high-stakes front-end architecture and localized technical delivery for an international sovereign banking system.

3. Timeline & Target Score
GMAT Status: Currently starting preparation; targeting a test date in late September / October to secure a score before the Round 2 window.
Target GMAT Focus Edition Score: 685–715+ (aiming for the 97th percentile or higher to offset the 12th-grade academic score).

4. Post-MBA Career Goals
Short-Term Goal: Management Consulting, specifically pivoting into AI Strategy / Digital Transformation Consulting at MBB firms (McKinsey, BCG, Bain) or Tier-2 strategy houses. I want to leverage my real-world systems engineering and banking delivery framework to advise enterprise clients on scaling technology operations.

Key Areas where I seek your guidance:
1 Mitigation Strategy: How heavily will my 12th-grade score (75.34\%) impact my selection index at ISB, and what threshold score on the GMAT Focus Edition is required to cleanly neutralize it?
2 Story Differentiation: As a candidate from an overrepresented demographic (Indian IT/Engineering Male), how can we best structure my narrative around international core banking delivery to stand out from pure software maintenance profiles?
3 Round 2 Scholarship Viability: I am targeting Round 2 due to my GMAT preparation timeline. Is merit-based financial aid realistically viable in this round assuming a highly competitive test score?

You have decent but very competitive profile : engg, male + IT background.

Things in your favor:
Strong UG performance (8.6 CGPA)
International banking exposure through TCS BaNCS, Clear tech-to-consulting pivot potential
~3 years work experience by application is a good range for ISB

Main bottlenecks:
12th score (75%) is lower than average for ISB admits, IT background is highly represented
Lack of promotion can raise questions, though TCS timelines are understood

12th score mitigation:
Yes, it matters, but it is very manageable with a strong GMAT.

Target GMAT Focus: 705+

Avoid positioning yourself as a standard front-end developer. Your positioning should be around core banking transformation and enterprise-scale systems for international banking clients.

Narrative should feel like:
banking technology + enterprise delivery + AI/digital transformation to consulting

Scholarship in R2:
Possible, but more competitive than R1. A 705+ GMAT and strong application quality would improve scholarship odds meaningfully.

Just wanted to ask one more thing...
Given my experience and profile, should I apply for PGP or PG- YLP, as it has only been 3 years since I graduated and overall approx 2 years of experience (excluding internship- i dont know if internships count or not). Also, does YLP hold same credibility as PGP?

To qualify for YL, the candidate needs to have lesser than 2 years of experience by June 2027.

Hi, I’m looking for the 2027 intake and I wish to get my profile evaluated. Feedback is welcome!

Academics:
- 10th: 10 CGPA (95% equivalent)
- 12th: 94%
- UG: 8.1 CGPA (81%), B.Tech CSE, Vellore Institute of Technology

Work Experience:
> Currently working at Tata Tech as an Analyst (1 year 5 months of experience as of May ’26).
>Part of one of the biggest projects in the company.
> Communicated my MBA plans to my manager beforehand, which led to a promotion to Analyst while my peers were converted to Developers. This gave me exposure to both technical and business responsibilities.
> Worked on several client-facing projects and collaborated closely with senior leadership to secure projects.
> Completed an internship at Accenture as a Software Engineer Intern.

College, School, and Extracurriculars:
> Published a research paper in AI and Analytics at IIM Ahmedabad’s IMRC 2024.
> Vice-Chair of a Social Entrepreneurship Club focusing on human, social, economic, and environmental sustainability.
>> Organized the biggest ideathon in college, where winners received initial funding from a jury of entrepreneurs.
>> Led expansion efforts by collaborating with peers from several colleges, onboarding founders, and facilitating internships and funding opportunities.
>> Gained exposure to startup operations, marketing, HR, PR, and event management through my tenure.
> Member of a technical club; contributed to organizing hackathons with over 15,000 registered participants.
>> Successfully invited the founder of MATLAB as a speaker and mentor.
> Awarded “Best Outgoing Student” (2013–2018) in school for excellence in academics and extracurriculars.
> also won several prizes in quizzes (appeared twice on national television), science congresses, debates, literary competitions, and essay contests.

Post-MBA Goals:
I wish to move towards more client-facing roles in consulting, strategy, or product management. During my time in my college Club, I realized that I both enjoy and provide more value in these areas compared to my current work.

Questions:
> I believe I wouldn’t qualify for PGPYL since I will exceed the required work experience this year. Is my profile strong enough to compete with the rest of the PGP applicants?
> What should my safe GMAT score look like?
> What more can I do to make my profile stand out from the rest of the regular tech-to-MBA applications?

The fundamental underlying principle of a good application is whether the person has shown consistent career progression or brings deep knowledge and relatively more maturity for his/her peer group by way of knowledge and experience.
In your case, focus on “what is this biggest project” in the company, and how critical your contribution has been to this project. Also think about whether you would be able to show any differentiation in terms of exposure gained through being awarded more responsibilities than peers, getting a chance to work closely with decision makers and leadership, with ample instances of being able to influence decisions through your analytical insights, and in turn gaining a unique perspective on the industry or the potential within the field that brings you to the point of pursuing an MBA.

My mentees who make it to MBA programs at about 2+ years have either shown depth in their field or were able to show higher than average exposure through the variety in their projects. Needless to say, most such applicants come from consulting backgrounds, but if you come from a startup-like environment, you too can appeal to the adcoms through how intelligently you speak about your work and what you want to do in the future.

Also, the adcoms will think, if you are so interested in PM, strategy or other such roles, what is stopping you from getting into pre MBA roles that can show progression beyond your current role? This question tends to arise if you apply with seemingly less exposure/experience. What could you do? Look for ways to show a clear takeoff point in your career if you want to stand out as a young candidate. ISB may or may not happen immediately, so in parallel start applying to PM, strategy and similar roles within growth stage companies where you can get ample exposure to business challenges. If you manage to secure offers from such roles by the time you apply, you can use them as leverage in your application journey. And even if nothing materializes immediately, ISB would still take note of this as a strong sign of progression, ambition and intentional career movement.

Feel free to speak should you want to discuss your work experience in detail.

Best wishes

Hi,
Below is our evaluation of your profile.

What Is Working Well:
Academics are consistently strong across all levels and hence no red flags. The promotion to Analyst while peers became Developers is a genuine differentiator and shows early business mindset. The Social Entrepreneurship Club tenure organizing a funded ideathon, expanding to multiple colleges, and facilitating real startup opportunities iss your most compelling asset. Publishing a research paper at IIM-A’s IMRC as an undergrad adds intellectual credibility that most applicants lack. But you will need to show some relation b/w research paper and work.

Gaps:
Work experience at ~2 years sits well below ISB’s 4–5 year average, which will be noticed. More critically, your leadership role doesn’t come across clearly phrases like "collaborated with senior leadership" and "worked on client-facing projects" read as participation, not ownership. Without quantified outcomes (revenue, project scale, client impact), the professional story feels thin. Additionally, tech-to-consulting is one of ISB’s most crowded applicant profiles, so your narrative needs far sharper differentiation to stand out.

Recommendations:
• GMAT: Target 685+ to compensate for lower experience years
• Quantify work impact: Attach numbers to every professional achievement before writing essays
• Reframe your story: Lead with your entrepreneurship angle the startup exposure, ideathon, and funding facilitation rather than a generic consulting pivot
• Seriously consider the 2028 intake: One additional year of experience with a stronger leadership role at work would meaningfully improve your competitiveness

I am an ISB alum CO15 and have been mentoring applicants ace their application for 8+ years. Feel free to reach out if you seek any support.

Cheers and all the best

Hi anjalijalan08,

Your profile appears reasonably competitive for programs like ISB and IIMA PGPX given the combination of product marketing, digital marketing, consulting, and client-facing transformation experience across firms like Zoho, startups, and Infosys.

One important complexity, however, is the existing PGPM from Great Lakes. You will need to clearly justify why you now require another MBA and what specific gap this MBA will help bridge in your long-term career trajectory.

Your post-MBA goals also need sharper clarity. Since academics are somewhat mixed due to the PGPM CGPA, a strong GMAT FE score around 675+ or GRE around 325 would strengthen your competitiveness further.

All the Best!

Happy to connect if you’d like to discuss your profile in more detail.

@WA@uox6115 - interesting profile, given the undergrad GPA, Oracle brand, career progression/ recognitions and balanced extracurriculars.

You haven't mentioned your directional post-MBA career goals, but it'd be crucial to have a strong narrative covering your experiences, goals, and how the MBA (and ISB) fits in.

While there's no 'magic' score, aiming for a 327-328 GRE with a balanced sectional split would be ideal.

Arvind

FunnyRock: The undergrad GPA looks a bit low. Any reasons e.g. was it low during certain semesters/ courses?

I'm assuming you worked in Canada and then moved to India within MS? Were there any progressions or promotions in your role? And any extracurricular activities that you've been involved in?

The career goals sound broad: consulting and PE/ VC are quite different spaces, and having clarity on which domain (and 'why') will help strengthen your narrative.
