Guys, the interview should be pretty engaging....I had mine on campus with an associate director of admissions...

It was basically conversational with typical questions....why kellogg, why an mba, review of resume etc.

Nothing really out of the ordinary, and my 30 minute interview went 45 or so....the interviewer seemed to be nodding a lot and writing furiously, also made her a laugh a few times. That being said no clue how it went....the admissions people are very good and being friendly and engaging without indicating whether you fit their 'profile' of an admitted student....will have to wait and see but i think the interview went well considering it was my first one....

yes I second what has already been said. They asked me the basic questions Why MBA, Why Kellogg, Why now etc. He also went through my resume asking questions.

just go in relaxed and treat it as a conversation with a friend and you will be fine. I'm rooting for you guys!!

Regarding interviews...

Is there a difference between on campus versus off campus interviews? Do you think that they are viewed differently?

Also, if I select off campus interview and am told that there are no interviewers available, is it possible to schedule an on campus interview instead? Would they then wonder "why the heck didn't he/she sign up for an on campus interview in the first place?"

To your first question, both on and off campus interviews are viewed exactly the same. In fact, if you live in the Chicago area, you have to interview off campus, as the volume of Chicagoland applications far exceeds the admission's offices capacity to conduct interviews.

To your second question, generally speaking, unless you live in an area where there are literally no Kellogg alums, you will probably be able to get an off campus interview. In the extreme cases when this is not possible, you may be scheduled for a phone interview. That being said, if you have not attended an off campus Kellogg Admissions event, I would strongly encourage you to visit the campus. Culture fit is a HUGE part of the admissions decision process, and showing that you have invested in getting the know the culture is important. Event attendance/ campus visits are noted in your application file.

I'm sure it would not be a problem to call the admissions office and request an on campus interview. If they can find a slot for you, they will. Otherwise, you will have to have your interview off campus.

Hope this helps.

Guessing a lot of people have read this blog (it was voted "Best" by ClearAdmit), but in case you haven't...

I just stumbled across it today and read it cover to cover. She does a great job telling her application story which I think a lot of us can relate to (I guess she's a GC member, not sure who though - let me know if you happen to know and I'll send a Kudos her way, lol). Her post (with pictures!) about receiving the "big envelope" from Kellogg made me very excited/motivated, since this is one of my dream schools.

Also noteworthy is her entry earlier this year re: how not to let the entire process define/defeat you.

hey guys - after the interview, do we need to sign-off / 'check a box' somewhere that we have completed the interview?

hey guys - after the interview, do we need to sign-off / 'check a box' somewhere that we have completed the interview?

So a very long answer to a short question.

There is no 'box' to check. Once your interview is complete, the interviewer fills out a fairly in depth report. It your interview was on campus, turn around on this report is usually within a week or two. If you interviewed off campus, then its just a matter of how quickly the interviewer gets around to it. They are encouraged to get them in quickly, but it doesn't always happen.

Assuming that the interview was the last piece of your application outstanding, your file will be moved to the complete pile where it will be picked up and reviewed by an admissions reader. Keep in mind that every application for an applicant that is ultimately accepted will have been read by a student on the admissions committee, a full time staffer, and Beth Fly (Dean of Admissions). Point being, it can take a while.

Another important thing to remember as you are nervously waiting for that phone call in December is that timing of completion of your interview (thus completion of your application) does not directly corelate to when your application will be read and how quickly it will go through the reading process. The students selected to be admissions readers go through a very intense screening and training process, and are purposefully selected to represent the diversity of culture and back ground that exists at Kellogg. So why am I saying this? Often times, going through the reading process requires colaboration between two or more student readers. Take my application for example. I was in the military and then public sector defense consulting before Kellogg. Let's say my packet is picked up by a student reader named Sally, who, prior to Kellogg was a school teacher. Do you really think she is going to have any idea what I'm talking about when in one of my essays I talk about how one of my greatest accomplishments was recieving a certain award in the military for optimizing a weapon's calibration program? My guess is no. But will Joe, who was in the Marine Corps before Kellogg and also an admissions reader know? For sure.

I guess what I am trying to say in all of this, is that December will be stressful for sure, and, as much as you may want to read into why you haven't heard anything back yet from admissions, the reality is that there is a lot of randomness in the process. I will say that from the folks that I know well who are both student interviewers and readers, I can tell you in full confidence that process is very organized, sound, and fair.

aak 1985, I know you weren't implying this with the box checking comment, but just for everyone's sake, every part of your application, and every step in the admissions process is important. Just because everyone gets an interview, doesn't mean that the interview should be viewed as checking a box. It definitely matters. Kellogg as a whole is about community and the culture we create. The entire admissions process is about bringing people to Kellogg that will help this culture grow.

Sorry for the essay. Hope this helps.

I just finished reading through last year's thread for the R1 decisions. It seems that applicants started to receive final decisions last year in early December with a January 11 communication day. Does this mean that we should expect to start seeing decisions pop up as early as late November this year since communication day has been moved up to December 20?

Come one everyone, let's get some unhealthy, nerve-wrenching, good-ole-fashion speculation started. I'd even be open to taking some bets on when we'll start to hear back (does adcom frown on that?). If I can make this wait about money it will take my attention off the fact that it's truly about the direction of my life.

I wouldn't expect decisions to start any earlier than they did last year. As domtri mentioned, reviewing applications is a very thorough process and takes some time to do. Moving the decision date earlier in the year was probably more a function of recognizing that decisions are ready by then anyway rather than a push to accelerate the decision process.
