I've submitted 2 pages cover letter, 520 words (counting from just after Dear Mr. Garcia to before Sincerely).

If a school doesn't accept me because I write some extra words, or write a 2 pages cover letter, then surely it isn't my fit school.

Mine is 543 words of content... and I am not shortening it .. and neither is my style of writing very business like (thought I did standard business formatting)... but I think what matters in the end is what impact you make on the reader.. but thats just me.. if I don't get an interview invite.. then maybe I'll have reconsider my theory :)

All the Best! to everyone

What about the question about grades in Calculus and Micro-economics? What is that question meant for? I intend to leave it blank

That IS pretty cool... saving a few trees I'm sure -- and now I feel much better about my 9.5 sized font, since it doesn't take much to flip those things horizontal for a 'zoomed-in' view. 8-)

Roll call updated. So much for a decline in applications (at least for GMATClubbers applying to Sloan). We may wind up with MORE applicants than last year!

Congratulations and good luck to everyone who submitted for Round 1... (including the adventure-seekers about to submit in the next 3.5 hours ) And now the long wait unitl the coveted interview invitations... hopefully the holidays come early for all of us this year.

Essay Limits Poll

Has any one done a poll on how many people go over the limit? I'm curious to see if anyone has been admitted who has passed 500 words. I would assume MIT has enough qualified applicants that can follow instructions that they don't need to accept those who can't. Am I wrong?

I've read somewhere around here that someone met a current student who went over the word limit. Whether he/she is the norm or exception to the rule is anyone's guess.

I believe you can exceed word limits upto 10% of the word limits and this holds true of all the colleges, except HBS.

A couple years old, but probably still valid:

Hi Barry, how stringent is the word limit for the essays. Is 500 words +/ 5 % acceptable?

BarryReckleyMIT (Oct 23, 2008 12:31:49 PM)
Ankit: Yes.

Well I think 10% over is not a problem, no one is counting words, you attach a pdf, one cannot automatically count words.. well i have a bigger problem..

attended the LGO day yesterday and I was all set with R1 materials. One cannot apply to both simultaneously, so decided will make up my mind after the event. Well still torn, the LGO sounds like a good idea - MS and a MBA in 2 years, well I have a PhD, so one would ask why bother with MS? But then I could do a specialization in the energy area (which is the area I work in anyway and will be different from my PhD area).. So its ok, and there seems to be a good bunch of serious partner companies.. Well its operations focussed so no finance etc.. But I hear if you really want to do so something in the area it can still be done..

In any case, they wont allow simultaneous applications to both, so if I let go of R1 then I will basically be LGO or R2 MBA.. Don't know if R1 will put me at a significant advantage or if it is ok to wait till R2? What do you guys think?
