The requirement that your essays for MIT describe experiences within the last three years comes directly from MIT Sloan's application instructions, so I think it is in an applicant's best interest to follow those directions as closely as possible. It was at an info session that I heard someone from the admissions staff reiterate that, basically saying that recent experiences are more relevant in predicting how someone might perform in the MBA program.
The last question in this interview with Rod Garcia from last year says the same: "
...we are more interested in examples that happened more recently – say, in the last two years – because your behavior in the last two years is more reflective than something six or 10 years ago." Source:
