More than 100 Round one applicants!

What happened to the supposed decrease in the number of MBA applicants across the board?

It's official folks... I've closed the Round 1 roll call at 114 MIT Sloan MBA applicants!!! :!:

As invites (and dreaded waitlist/ding notifications ) roll out, please respond and I'll continue tracking stats on page 1.

Good luck everyone!

I am applying to sloan for R2. I have heard the essays have to be based on experiences within last 3 years. How strongly is it followed? I read a few conflicting opinions on this forum.

Also, what is primary job of a recommender - is it to sort of validate or reinforce what you have said in your essays application, or is it offering his own strong endorsement of the applicant as a great candidate w/o reinforcing your essays. Which is better?

It's a fine line. You don't want your recommenders to contradict anything you said in your essays (career goals, experiences, etc), but ideally you do want them to provide new and relevant information. If you are a superstar, you should have plenty of strong experiences and qualities you may not have been able to demonstrate in your essays or resume. If a recommender can vouch very strongly for your personal qualities and write about a previously untold fantastic contribution you made, so much the better.

The requirement that your essays for MIT describe experiences within the last three years comes directly from MIT Sloan's application instructions, so I think it is in an applicant's best interest to follow those directions as closely as possible. It was at an info session that I heard someone from the admissions staff reiterate that, basically saying that recent experiences are more relevant in predicting how someone might perform in the MBA program.

The last question in this interview with Rod Garcia from last year says the same: "...we are more interested in examples that happened more recently – say, in the last two years – because your behavior in the last two years is more reflective than something six or 10 years ago." Source: https://blog.clearadmit.com/2009/06/admi ... od-garcia/

On a separate topic, from the same interview, it sounds like every single R1 application will be read before invites go out, since everyone's applications will be scored and aggregated and then Rod will choose the 18% or so (no more than 800 for all rounds) to get an invite.

I found the numbers a bit odd with the figures Rod mentioned. Let me know if I'm missing some information. I feel like I saw in some interview I read that he said roughly half who get interviewed will get accepted. However, according to businessweek, about 17% were interviewed, and 14% accepted. That is closer to about 75-80% of interviews get accepted. Thoughts?
