If you feel strongly about this that’s fine but I edit down to 5 or 10% over; but not on every essay. It truly is necessary for a complete story when I do that. GSB has even said this is OK. If they are truly very concerned about this they would do everything as text boxes where you can’t go over by a single character (like Wharton with both essays & recommendations)
