Difficult to differentiate yourself when you kind of already know what type of applicant you are. A little intimidating. Do you think this 76% overall interview/acceptance rate holds true when you consider just military applicants? There are plenty of military applicants out there. I think MIT's track record blows HBS out of the water when you consider graduate career paths (percentage in leadership roles and starting companies) so I'm hopeful they will give me a shot. The leg up on the competition we have, of course, is human leadership, but I have a feeling in the admissions game they don't take a mutual fund analyst and put him next to an army officer and say "which one?" Thoughts? I am a logistics officer with a pretty standard officer career path -> PL, XO, CO. Interviewing early Jan.

Congrats on the invite, RD! And good luck with the interview!

Mateo - good luck with finishing up apps. I'm still in that process as well, a couple of rolling admissions schools and applying to one school R2 (due in Jan) and another school R3 (due in Feb).

Got an interview invite to University of Cambridge, will be flying out to Europe next month for that. Will also take the opportunity to tour some other schools out there.
Thanks BigRedEnvEng -- and best of luck with your interview at Cambridge.

Just got interview invite from MIT for Fall 2011. This is probably somewhere, but what are my odds after interview invitation?
Congrats jbark55, and good luck on your interview. Mine's coming up in early January as well.

Good luck to all! Again, dumb question I know, but I'm a little intimidated by the price tag. according to business week 160,000 tax, title, and out the door?! https://www.businessweek.com/bschools/ra ... sloan.html Partial GI bill and reservist duty will probably kick in 30-40k, savings sitting shabbily at approx 20k, that leaves 100k + in student loans?! Anybody got a good rollup of avg grant size and avg signing bonus upon graduation? I know I am getting ahead of myself (not even admitted yet) but I'd hate to be sucking down 1000 dollar a month student loans for 10 yrs. Thoughts? Guess I shoulda saved more deployment cash. Chiding and lectures aside, need some perspective here. Am I not thinking of something?

Ha, I'm right there with you man. Definitely not counting my chickens before they hatch, but that price tag has been in the back of my mind for a while. I get partial Post 9/11 GI Bill as well, but that's about it... will probably have 100k in student loans when all's said and done (if I wind up at Sloan). Some top tier consulancies will offer you tuition reimbursement which can cover a year's worth of tuition in exchange for "X" number of years of work... and that's not including signing bonus, which will be fairly substantial at the same companies (MBB, etc.) I guess what I'm trying to say is, don't let the financial aspect deter you from accepting a seat at a top program. Your boost in earning potential will make up for it in the long run... just my $0.02.

Anyone applying this year attending as an active duty service member and getting sponsored by your service? I'll be attending under the EGSP (Army) but concerned about the ambiguous tuition cap policy.

Hey guys, I have a question about work experience. I was enlisted in the Army for 4 years before I attended undergrad, I want to know if my military stint will qualify as WE whenever I decide to apply for b-school. It would be greatly appreciated if someone with similar background or those who have seen this situation before to lend their advice. Thanks!

I am just a lowly candidate but I would say decidedly "yes" it counts.

I would think so as well, but a lot of times b-schools only look at the work that you have done post undergrad. I was a sergeant in the Army not an officer, so, I have a very rear background since most military people going to b-school are military officers and not enlisted. I will have a couple years of WE before I go to b-school, but it sure would be nice to be able highlight my military experience in my essays.

also i've heard most b schools don't put tons of stock in WE that's 5 + yrs old. this is one of the reasons I am not taking a follow on assignment from here, it will put my deployment in the "ancient history" category if I compete for a class of 2015 slot.

I think it counts to a point. B-Schools respect military service, so it's a plus, but it's older, so it doesn't count as much. Highlighting it is fine, but don't focus on it.

Sure, as long as you got an honorable discharge I would include it. It may or may not deserve as emphasis as your post-undergrad work, but I would say it was fairly meaningful "full-time employment" for you.

I met a guy at Anderson who went into the Marine Corps as an enlisted rifleman then a scout/sniper after finishing undergrad--slightly different situation than yours, but I'm sure he included that as work experience.

I just got into Booth with a significant scholarship after being enlisted for a while. I even wrote my risk essay about going to basic training (which was 10 years ago). I think like everything, it really depends on how you sell it. What did you accomplish, why was it significant, what did you learn etc., are all questions that you should be looking to answer.

having difficulty getting released from active duty. hrc non-concurs with REFRAD on the basis of a nov 6 email stating i am slated for recruiting command. interviewing at MIT in two days, interviewed at UCLA already. deferments are not an option at top programs, right? anyone have a way around this mess? don't really want to serve the full 8 active duty and end up a 31 year old applicant (I know, worse things have happened). Need some perspective.

Actually most schools do allow deferments in the case of military applicants--that's one of the few circumstances that the admissions pages will make a specific allowance for. Medical hardship is the only other one I'm aware of. Talk to the admissions office and see what they can do for you.
