FROM Owen Press Releases: Study: Bad middle managers are just a reflection of their bosses
Keeping middle managers happy with their supervisors is the key to retaining the lower-level workers they manage and avoiding expensive turnover costs, according to a Vanderbilt University study.

Hi,

due to some personal changes in my family I just made a decision to apply for an MBA a few weeks ago and think that Owen will be a great choice helping me to achieve my goals.
But I’m not sure how likely it is to be admitted in R3. Has anybody any experience?
Also, having read the previous posts I'm a bit confused about the required number of essays. mbanerd16 made clear that a total of two essays + 3 documents about activities are required. But anywhere else on the web only two essays are mentioned. From what I understood I would consider (and have prepared) the later three the same as the other essays (despite the topics of course...). Am I missing anything? Are they any different in what is required / how they should be structured? Thanks for helping!

If you have a competitive profile (GMAT Score/GPA/Work Experience) and a compelling reason to want to pursue an MBA (and in particular, at Owen), you should not be afraid to apply in R3 or R4.

Some schools say that they fill their incoming class' seats in R1 and R2 and have very few spots available during R3 so you have to be an extra special candidate to be admitted during R3. That is not my experience with Owen, and I would not be afraid to apply even as late as May.

Thanks a lot teleste!
With a GMAT score slightly above the class average and some years of work experience I hope I can be a competitive candidate.

Regarding the required activity information: I'm still not sure if I'm right about the formal requirements - should I handle those as another set of essays or would a shorter overview (e.g. in tabular form) be more sufficient?
I don't know if I'm overly concerned about a detail here but the uncertainty troubles me...

lny - I had the same questions when I applied in Rd 2. I called the admissions office and even they admitted it can be a bit confusing on the website. I was told that the activities portions of your essays are expected to be more of a list or table than a formal essay.

Hope this helps! Best of luck!!

At Discover Weekend in November someone asked a similar question. The answer was preferable in a bullet-point format for the extra-curricular, international experience, etc. "essays." Below is an example of the format that I used in RD 2.

Cross-Cultural Experiences – Full Name

- Germany (June 1990-January 1993)
- Who, what, why, where?
- Any supporting data/positions held/ etc.

- Bangkok, Thailand (April 2008)
- English as a Second Language Instruction at ***** University
- Worked with students to supplement existing staff as ESL Instructors.
- Took advantage of time in Thailand and visited the ancient capital of Ayyuthaya and the grounds of the “Grand Palace” outside of Bangkok.

- Afghanistan (*************)
- ********** in the U.S. Army
- Engaged with local Afghans on a daily basis.
- Partnered with local police departments and Afghan Army units.
- Developed relationships with local government officials.

Again, just an example but it seemed to work and was in the same vein with what admissions mentioned in November.

For those interviewing:

-Know *why you need/want an MBA*
-Know *why you want an MBA NOW*
-Know *why Vanderbilt is the right program for you*
-Research the program and speak to what concentrations/emphases/specializations/clubs interest you
-Know what firms recruit Vanderbilt students if there are some you are specifically interested in
-Demonstrate you have realistic short-term and long-term career plans
-Be able to sell yourself in 1-2 minutes (the so called "elevator pitch")
-If at all possible, visit

On the Owen website there is a lot of great information. Vanderbilt publishes one of the most comprehensive career reports of any MBA program. The course catalog is available online as well. Make good use of this info when weighing your decision to attend and preparing for interviews.

I believe all Round 2 applicants will be given their result on or around March 13, based on the website. Not sure if Vanderbilt notifies anyone earlier based on past years, but you should at least know by March 13! Good luck! Hope it's good news!

I just mailed them asking for clarification. I will post here immediately when I receive a reply.
