Hello,

I am about submitting an R2 application and was wondering if I can exceed the word limit for the essay. The word limit is 300 words but my essay has 312 words (< 5% exceedance). Is it okay?

Thanks!

Hello,

Ideally, you must not exceed the word limit; at the most, you may keep it ten words short of the word limit. Thus, if the essay is for 300 words, the essay should be over 290 words but within 300. A number of portals may not allow you to upload an essay even if it exceeds the word limit by a single word.

All the best!

This depends on the school. Some schools have hard limits and word counters where they check the # of words and others do not. If there is no word counter then you can exceed the word limit and 312 would be perfectly fine!

Good luck.

12 words over is perfectly fine unless it's a text box and even then, probably fine. I actually go to 10% sometimes and I edit things very succinctly so more room is needed, it is really needed. However I don't do this on all the essays and only if you can upload; for text box it's a good idea to scope out what is allowable so you are not in for a nasty surprise called rewriting your essay at the time of upload. One big change for INSEAD this year is a word count that does not allow a single letter over. But that is something I have not seen much of.
