Hi guys,

congrats to all those already admitted/invited to interviews, well done! (And fingers crossed for the rest)

I had a question regarding the format of the letters of recommendations your recommenders have used for Columbia as it seems a bit "non-standard" to me. The official guidelines from Columbia are:

We ask recommenders to consider the following guidelines when writing their recommendations:
(Not more than 1000 words)
The applicant’s performance.
Strengths and weaknesses of the applicant.
The applicant’s interpersonal skills.
The applicant’s written and spoken communication skills.
How does the applicant accept constructive criticism or handle conflicts?
How effective are the applicant’s interpersonal skills in the workplace?
The most important thing you would like the Admissions Committee to know.


I was wondering what is the standard/best way to approach this. How did your recommenders do it?
Did they answer each question individually (e.g. similar to LBS or INSEAD) or did they wrote one large letter touching all those points?

My recommender, I believe, wrote a large letter mentioning all the point. I let them do it 100% their way, but that's what they told me after the completion.

It does not look like it! When did you submit?

I am waiting on a decision from 6 January so the timing of responses (given other applicants who submitted later than me have already heard back) is not entirely chronological.

Best of luck and try not to go completely crazy waiting to hear. It cannot be long now...

Submitted 1/5 and still no updates. Applying for JD/MBA, and CLS has had my application at "Completion Pending" for 4 weeks now :twisted: Is that holding up my b-school application? The admissions page says that the applications are reviewed independently but that "limited consultation" may occur between the schools.

Anyone know how they contact admits if they're overseas? It sounds like a phone call is the norm, but if you're not in the same time zone, would they contact you through email?

After connecting with one of my interviewers, we set up a time and location via email similar to setting up a coffee date.

I think there are a number of factors that contribute to the timeline. When did you submit?

1) The merit deadline was January 8th, so I'm sure they received a ton of applications during that time frame. This might make it hard to judge the timeline.
2) Deposits for a lot of people are due shortly, so I'm sure that will give the adcom a better perspective of the number and type of applicants that they are looking for.
3) Maybe the adcom member who is supposed to review your app is swamped with other commitments and is a little slower reviewing applications.
