At HBS for example, you are stuck studying a pre-defined syllabus for the entire first year. You are also in class with the same 90 people for all your classes. So that means you won't have any choice as to what you study the first year and it also limits your social circles to some extent.

At other schools, say Sloan, you only have the pre-defined syllabus for the first semester. So you have 3 other semester where you can take whatever classes you want (in order to create a concentration in a particular area of study if you wish).

That is a general view of how it works at most b-schools.
