Concentration

Question

Hi,

I'm looking to apply for the fall 2016 intake and I have taken my GMAT (670 q48 v34).

This is a fairly general question. Can I know how I choose which field of MBA I am selected in. Will they select me based on what I write in goals essay?
And is it necessary I have to choose a concentration in the second year or right from the first year?

I have more questions, so If someone could chip in on this, it would be great help.

The goals section of your MBA application is very important. The admissions committee is looking for two things:
1. Do the candidates short & long-term goals make sense given her past work experience coupled with an MBA?
2. Will the candidate be able to recruit for her short-term goals on campus ...if not....is it feasible that the candidate will be able to network her way into a job post-graduation?

If the adcom can answer yes to those questions then you are in a good place.
I'm not sure I completely understand your question but the goals you state in your application don't have anything to do with what you study once at business school....

So the normal process is that you get to study a fixed syllabus during the first year or so and then you choose your electives and specialize in a particular concentration in the second year. That is the normal course of business school, right?

At HBS for example, you are stuck studying a pre-defined syllabus for the entire first year. You are also in class with the same 90 people for all your classes. So that means you won't have any choice as to what you study the first year and it also limits your social circles to some extent.

At other schools, say Sloan, you only have the pre-defined syllabus for the first semester. So you have 3 other semester where you can take whatever classes you want (in order to create a concentration in a particular area of study if you wish).

That is a general view of how it works at most b-schools.
