I think the issue with D is that, it only states an alternate criterion but does not present any facts to support it

I went with D and I'm still having a hard time understanding why C is the better option. Anyone care to break it down? :)

So basically for this question, Concetta's conclusion is that Franchot was a great writer, and then she goes on to present the reasoning why she believes so which includes the premise. We can look at this as a criterion since Franchot was a great writer because he understood the impact of industrialization early. If he didn't understand it, then Franchot wouldn't be a great writer would be the opposite way of looking at it!

Alicia rejects both the conclusion and the criterion so this part could be confusing and we can leave both c and d as potential answer choices. But it's the second part that determines that c is the answer! Alicia did not present any new facts supporting an alternative criterion. She instead just goes on to point and elaborate on the criterion that Concetta had already determined which was that Franchot was a great writer because he understood the impact of industrialization and not because of his writing skills which are essential for a writer. And instead, Alicia argues with a specific part that Concetta said that Franchot cannot be a great writer just because he understood the impact since that was more like common sense at that time.

Hope that makes sense?

Question Analysis
  • C: Franchot is considered a great writer. Why? He predicted issues arising from the Industrial Revolution (IR).
  • A: Not a great writer. Why? A great writer moves people through written words and addresses social issues. The consequences of the IR were already understood at the time.

Answer Choices Analysis
(A) Accepts Concetta’s criterion and then adds evidence to Concetta’s case
  • Completely Wrong choice
(B) Discredits Concetta’s evidence and then generalizes from new evidence
  • Irrelevant
(C) Rejects Concetta’s criterion and then disputes a specific claim
    • Rejects: Yes, it rejects Concetta’s claim with supporting facts.
    • Disputes: Addresses the awareness of the consequences of the Industrial Revolution.
    • Keep it !!

(D) Disputes Concetta’s conclusion and then presents facts in support of an alternative criterion
  • Disputes: Yes.
  • Presents facts: An alternative criterion is mentioned but lacks supporting evidence.
    Reject

(E) Attacks one of Concetta’s claims and then criticizes the structure of her argument
  • Irrelevant
    • This does not match the logical flow of the argument.
      Final Answer: (C)
