Really sorry man. I had a similar situation happened to me at Yale last year when I was on the waitlist. One thing which bothered me was Yale had 2 less people in their class in 2012, then they had in 2011, so part of me thinks if I was on top of the list, then how can they not admit one more person? I am sure schools have little flexibility. And I was rejected w/o an interview this year. I think schools probably send similar emails to tons of people just to make us feel good. This whole political correctness thing is annoying sometimes.

Soojin blogged about this for Ross last year. She said something to the effect of: it depends on the applicant pool. You can be WL or admitted this year,but if you choose to reapply you're being evaluated against an entirely different set of applications for the most part. What was "good", "strong", or "unique" about your profile last year may be run of the mill this year. It's all relative.
