Nice spread of schools and great application strategy with spreading the applications between R1 and R2. I would say though applying only to HBS/Stanford is going to be a limited data point... you don't know if you are well short of the goal if you get a ding or not and HSW can be unpredictable.

I have three year experience in strategy consulting and I finished my undergrad (B.Com - Hons) from one of the top colleges in India for Commerce. I have decent extra curriculars and volunteering roles. I have scored 680 in GMAT.

Hi. You have an interesting and unique profile. My guess you probably want a higher score for Ross but Kelley and Judge nay work, though I would not expect any Aid with 650 so may be worth retaking if you think there is a chance you can do better and if you can improve by more than 30 points, def worth waiting until R2.

In terms of career, I guess you are going to recruit in CPG, staying in the same industry - that helps a lot having prior work experience, however, CPG is not a super popular track these days - few companies sponsor H1B's and the pay is not as good as Consulting or Tech or finance in the US at least. Just heads up but I think with your background it still makes sense to pursue as you will have the best shot at recruiting. It will be networking and recruiting on your own. I would recommend that you start now and reach out to students and try to connect with folks from CPG background or looking to get into this area - this will help in the long term.

@bb Thanks a lot for your recommendation!
One of the points makes me a little hesitant about my profile is the employability after graduate. Indeed the pay is not as good as Consulting/ Tech/ Finance & probably not a favorable profile that schools want. Yet I can't go away for the passion :P hehe Definitely would follow your advice to reach out folks & go networking.

I don’t think this would diminish your chances of admission. The schools want diverse group of students and they also want people who will get a job in their field. Schools want leaders in their field. It may be nonprofit or HR or consulting or tech. Schools know that not everyone will work in consulting but the lake strong people from any industry. If you are good at what you do, and you’re passionate about it, it shows in everything you do.

After 3 years in technology, I am looking for a switch into strategy and management. I want to be at a firm where I can help construct the vision, assist in market strategy, and work in mergers and acquisitions. I do not want to code 9-5, which is what I do now.

I am targeting Yale SOM, Stanford GSB, Wharton, Booth, UVA Darden, and Scheller GA Tech

My undergrad is in Systems Engineering and Economics from UVA where I received a GPA of 3.7

My biggest "story" that I can tell is about mentorship. From the time I was 12, I have done tutoring, and then in college I was an RA and also helped build an engineering after school mentorship science program for underprivileged kids. At my company, I founded an intern mentor program for 3 years and have run it. I would like to convey how I like the value and idea of mentorship and how I would improve such qualities at a business school.

Aside from that, pretty standard extracurriculars, I do some service here and there, play sports, and was in Model UN growing up.

My GMAT is a 740 but Q 46 V 46. I am an Indian male in tech, so I worry that the Q 46 is a bit low, can someone confirm or deny this for my schools of choice.

As a whole what do you think?

Hi redskinner2390,

Thanks for sharing your profile and MBA aspirations.

My name is Priyanka, Client Manager at ARINGO.

Your overall GMAT score and a good GPA seem fine- Don't worry much. The focus needs to be more on your "story" and we can help you with that :). While mentoring is a good story we can discuss your profile further in depth to take out more meaty data for your applications (w.r.t. goals, etc.). The target schools are competitive and will require compelling essays.

A lot of details are missing like your current employment details, roles and responsibilities, etc. in the given information, so if you send me your CV and other info at priyankak@ARINGO.com, I would love to connect you with our CEO who will be happy to help further with a detailed review and perhaps work together on some fantastic apps.

All the best!

Awesome profile. I would recommend to you another awesome Brazilian former attorney who is doing his MBA at Darden right now and who’s joining MBB next year - his goals were project management or consulting and your backgrounds seem quite a bit similar. He has been able to leverage his law degree to great extent in recruiting in the United States so this is going to be a great advantage for you as well. If you want to message him on GMAT Club, is user name is @MaliFri.

Do you have an awesome long-term goal. It’s great to have a vision that is personal and unique. I would recommend getting quite specific and granular in your short term goals. I assume you would be recruiting for some tech p.m. rules among the top companies in the US?

Hi. It is a good question. I can tell you right away that no consultant will tell you that you suck but you are in luck cause I ain't no consultant. Alright. that was a bit of a bad joke, but there was truth in it, nobody wants to kill anyone's dreams. A lot about applications is about your confidence and about how you present yourself.

I would say you picked what i would consider pretty aggressive goals but I think reachable with some help from a friend who can back you up. At the same time, I would say most except UCLA would be no-scholarship programs. If you are considering/looking for scholarships, perhaps worth going down a tier to Fuqua, Ross, Yale, Darden, Johnson, Stern.

I don't do much of profile reviews and I don't consult and I have no idea about the strength of your applications and stories but with lots of assumptions, that's my take. As. usual, it is good to apply to a spectrum of programs to get feedback in R1 and readjust for R2.

My guess you are going to be retaking the GMAT as 600 is a tough sell for some of these programs... though score is not everything and some will waive them for a strong applicant....

Consulting can be a tricky industry to break into. You have to be really focused and polished, quick thinking on your feet, and well presented, though I don't really know about the hiring patterns outside of the US. 😇

Usually in consulting you will be given a project you can start contributing to immediately. This means you learn on your own and start adding value in ways you can until you figure things out. You won't be trained in marketing, finance and operations. Nobody has time for that but you can learn from observing others. You will have to work on the project as otherwise, nobody will pick you and rather pick experienced consultants who do not require training. Most likely you would be deployed in Oil and Gas consulting projects since that's your strength. Just FYI.

Thanks Mr.bb for your suggestion.
1. I am a continuation question on the same, can't I be learning the required skills in my MBA course and be job ready, right after my studies
2. If Change of field is required, could you please suggest how shall I craft my application and even my MBA journey

That is a good question. MBA is a pretty generic degree and unfortunately it does not teach you any specific skills you will need on job. 😱

You learn very broad frameworks and ways to prioritize your time as well as manage stress and push yourself to the limits but you don’t really learn how Amazon warehouse functions for example or how Apple marketing works or how Microsoft tech PMs are expected to deliver their PPTs…

Awesome profile! I would consider a few more UK schools potentially. The challenge with France will be language during recruiting. If you don't speak French, you won't be eligible for local positions. I am sure there will be a group of ESSEC UK alums and in other parts of the world but that will be a small group compared to the UK schools.

German programs can be interesting (likely not well known) but they are free, but if you are looking for rank/prestige, perhaps skip.

About me:

-I am a leader, technologist, angel investor, and author dedicated to driving innovation and impact in the tech ecosystem. 13 years of work experience
-Exited Social Entrepreneur: As co-founder and CEO of a startup company, I led its growth trajectory, securing venture capital, major media coverage, and ultimately, acquisition. Previously I worked in marketing at a large CPG.
-Product management and software engineering: I've built innovative technology and AI solutions. I am also writing a book about AI for a publisher
-Author and speaker: I've published books and articles, and delivered keynote speeches and TEDx speeches.
-Advisor and board member: I’ve been a mentor, consultant, and part of advisory committees and boards alongside senior leaders from major companies
-Angel investor: Investing alongside top-tier VC firms through SPVs, I've seen one exit and three of my portfolio companies are at unicorn status.
-Press: My work has been featured by the New York Times and more
-Awards: I’ve been honoured with awards including an Honorary Degree for my contributions to society.
-Education: I earned my Bachelors' degree in business with honours from a leading Canadian university. GPA: 3.7 (80%)
-Hobbies: Dancing, standup comedy, playwriting, etc. I have won medals in dancing and received press and a positive review for my theatrical works
-Diversity: pan, NB, Canadian

Goals:
-I am applying to MBA and EMBA programs because I think they would help me with my career interests: growing an impactful startup, being part of a venture capital firm, and giving back through teaching.
-My career objectives are to grow and develop my skills, passion and global reach; to drive innovation, to be an empowering leader, and to make a positive impact. I believe an MBA or EMBA program, with a unique set of curriculum, network and offerings, would help me achieve these objectives.

Regions:
-N.A., Europe, global

I have not yet done a test but am studying for it now.

Hoping to get merit-based scholarships.

Hi - awesome profile and great to see someone more experienced and with such fantastic and strong profile!

The obvious thing to mention which should not discourage you but perhaps give you a better idea how to improve your chances, US FT MBA is going to be tough with 13 years of work experience. You can check my posts about some of the challenges for more experienced applicants here: https://gmatclub.com/forum/old-for-an-mba-352223.html. This is not the case in the EU however.

At the same time, Sloan Fellows and the MSx Programs are a fantastic choice for someone looking for a FT MBA experience and being a cohort of equally well-established individuals who are not looking to be junior consultants. On a side, benefits for these programs for international applicants include OPT with a work permit in the US after graduation (something that I don't believe EMBA's give you since they are not full time study methods). Not sure if that's a concern at all for you.

In terms of scholarships, i think there is an opportunity and a chance, looking at your background and goals, however, EMBA and Professional programs usually tend to be quite meager with merit-based scholarships for EMBA candidates. The assumption in these programs is that either your employer pays or you are investing in yourself.... and it may be a bit tricky to tell the story of why you need a scholarship if you are a successful VC but again there are exceptions everywhere all the time.

Obviously an EMBA assumes that you are busy with something else since you only have classes once a month or so while a FT program will keep you busy 200% of the day. So those are different experiences. I think both are attainable with MSx / Sloan Fellows and EU FT programs or the EMBA's. The big question is what experience you are looking for or prefer. I would also say EMBA applications are a lot more straightforward and enjoyable so you may be drawn there if you get frustrated with FT MBA.

Wow. 725 will be very high in Focus. You can definitely get away with 655 for these programs so make sure you don't kill yourself with the Test but it won't hurt to have a high score by any means and will indicate your freshness and also potentially open up a door for a merit scholarship. So as long as you don't torpedo your application with the test prep, go for it!

P.S. I saw you mentioned Fortune 100 or Fortune 10 and then also consulting as goals. Which role? It would be good to define and be very precise with your immediate career goals (long term can be fuzzy and vague)
