Have close to 10 years of experience with ~6 years in B2B Product management majorly in Indian startups. Want take a step back, get a Global Perspective and upskill on leadership and Emerging tech. Will give me a more holistic perspective and help me become a better leader in the future. Looking to apply to and get into Top 1 year programs in the US.

Hi @Eu_top, your background is good and the schools in your list are in-line with your goals.

Some might consider your work-ex (~10 years) to be on the higher side for an MBA, so highlighting "why MBA NOW" would be important. A higher score (ideally 700+/ Focus equivalent) can help increase your chances, given the Indian Male applicant perspective.

Showcasing your ExtraCurriculars would be crucial to present a balanced profile. European programs value certain traits, so adapting your application/ essays to the school can help differentiate.

Hope this helps a bit. Feel free to reach out through the link(s) below for a deeper chat.

Arvind

Hi @Eu_top, INSEAD alumna here.
I do not quite understand why you cite the MBA as a stepping stone for the transition from a B2B product to a B2C product. You would need to dig deeper and make a much stronger case for an MBA at this late stage in your career and with the schools that are on your target list. And yes, definitely retake the test because the competition gets tougher for people with more work experience (the bell curve in MBA cohort selection). Given the pedigree of the schools you are targeting, I would also advise you to be a bit visionary in your goals. Think what kind of problem solving would excite you post MBA. Have you observed a problem or a gap or a market potential in your industry? How will you address that. A B2B product manager who wants to move into B2C after the MBA may not be the profile that top schools would be most excited about. You will have to craft a strong storyline. Depending on your score, you can add LBS to your list.

Feel free to speak one to one for candid advice.

Best wishes

Aanchal Sahni (INSEAD alum, former INSEAD admissions interviewer)

Hi Aanchal,

Thanks a lot for the response!

That’s just one of the reasons and I realise I stated the same here without giving the full picture - the main intent is to take a step back, get a global perspective (till now I have worked in the India and SEA geographies) and go for a domain/industry and geography switch within Product itself. Right now given my experience it’s becoming difficult for me to do the same.

However, the input is duly noted and will be acted upon. Will reach out soon for further help.

Regards,
Siddarth

Hi Sid, when did you receive communication from Insead? Was it for the January intake's Round 1? I'm waiting for mine, and since our profiles are similar, I'm just checking.
Thanks in Advance

Hi @M***** , I hope you are doing well!

Your strong GPA (9.21) and 4 years of consulting experience position you well for MBA programs, especially if you can showcase leadership, impact, and clear career progression in your roles. While a GRE score of 319 is decent, aiming for a slightly higher score could make your profile more competitive, particularly for top-tier programs. We would like to know more about your profile like work exp., achievements, international exposure, challenges faced, impact created and more, discussing these details, will help us identify if you can pull out good stories from your experience.

If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a 1:1 call with you to discuss your profile in detail. Please feel free to schedule a profile evaluation call according to your convenience.

Cheers!

Hi. It's been very competitive for Asia applicants to break into the M7's and Top 15 in the last few years - had some really strong applicants and the best they could do was INSEAD, which is not bad at all by no means. However, the US Schools were tight surprisingly about their app. Definitely should feasible at Goizueta and hopefully UNC. Fuqua's GMAT is a notch above, so it is a toss up there I think.

Thank you for the reply. I would like to add a few details:
1. I will be receiving my US green card soon, hoping it will help. I lived and worked in the US for over 7 years.
2. Attended secondary school in Singapore. Lived in Singapore for most of my teenage years before I moved to the US for University.
3. Division 1 NCAA athlete. Played in the same conference (ACC) as Duke, UNC, and Georgia Tech. Very competitive and demanding years for my under grad.
4. Unique work experience in a small business. Became deputy general manager at age 24 (my current age).

I know my GMAT is below average for my nationality. Tested twice and received the same 655 score. Not sure if I will retake again for this round of application.

Wow. All of these are really good! That should help quite a bit!
Not sure it is worth retaking the test. You can try the GRE route to see if you can eek out more of a score but if you already sent the GMAT, it may not be worth boring with a different test as schools seem to be somewhat a loss as to what to do with multiple scores.

P.S. The only one that's a bit of a wild-card is the unique small business experience - it is hard for schools to verify these things and for employers as well so they always prefer national brands (even if a lower position) but fingers crossed. I think you have a fantastic profile and still quite a bit of a career ahead of you - 3 years is probably the minimum standard (I know they say 2) but there are hardly any of those people and the average is 5-6, so you have 3-4 years ahead of you where you can choose between working on your test and career or going back to school.

Hi @Sherryyh , I hope all is well.

With a strong academic background, including a 3.89 GPA and a competitive GMAT Classic score of 710, your profile demonstrates the intellectual capability needed for top-tier MBA programs. However, with only 3 years of work experience, you'll need to highlight significant leadership contributions and measurable impact to offset being on the lower end of the experience range. Your goal of transitioning into consulting is ambitious but achievable, especially if you showcase transferable skills from your current industry, such as problem-solving, analytical thinking, or client engagement. To strengthen your narrative, articulate a clear understanding of consulting through research, certifications, or participation in case competitions, while also addressing how an MBA will bridge specific skill gaps. What's going to matter most in your application is how you connect the experiential dots and build a great story to stand out from other applicants in the pool.

As we have very little information now, we cannot comment much on your profile. If you’d like, we are happy to discuss your leadership skills, impact created, challenges faced, awards and achievements and extracurriculars to assess your chances to top B-schools and strengthen your application with impactful stories.

Fantastic! Congratulations!
That’s pretty much the top score you can get in terms of person tiles at least and in my book makes it the top score.

PS. You sending updates to schools?

Thank you! I am updating my score and hoping for an interview invite from Duke. Incredibly happy with a very balanced score, 90+ percentile in all 3 sections.

Heck, even if it was not balanced, it is still 715 😂

Fantastic job. What did you do and what did you use to improve?

I mainly studied the official GMAC question bank. Used the free trial from e-Gmat and questions from GMATClub for some extra practice questions. For my last 655, I did not rest well the day before and was exhausted during the exam. This last prep I had GMAC Official Mock 745, 755, and 725 (second reuse of the Mocks).

That is a fantastic result - it is your determination and yes, likely 655 was not a good reflection of your abilities. Glad you got the 715!

I scored 715 online. Will it take longer to receive the official score report? How high is the chance to be flagged for review? I sent an unofficial update to schools asking if they will consider the score for R2 decisions, and they all replied that they needed the official report.

There is always a chance that a test will get flagged for routine review.

If that happens, you can always mention that to Business schools and they are usually understanding about it.... Let’s hope it does not happen. 🤞

Super happy with the results. UNC is my top choice after Duke rejected without interview. I was very intentional with the school locations, and another priority was to minimize the cost of attendance. So glad to push through with a GMAT retake. I did not hire a consultant; I studied a LOT of content posted by MBA consultant firms. Celebrating the school offers and my 25th birthday this weekend!

Hello Sherry,
Congratulations for securing such high scores, i am stuck in between 550 and 625 score, i am not able to finish my exams on time verbal and DI section specifically, can you suggest the strategy that you are following to get such high scores? what different did you do?

Hi, are you located in the US? I know myself well and analyzed my weaknesses and targeted that for my GMAT practice. I used all GMAC official practice banks and mock exams.

If you are struggling with Verbal and DI, I recommend starting with improving your fundamental language skills. Diligently read business journals like the Wall Street Journal daily to improve your reading comprehension. Start timing yourself when you read articles and see how well you understand and remember the content after 1 read.

Good luck and believe in yourself!
Note: I am just a good test taker, not a GMAT tutor.

Short Term: I am Open to opportunities in Europe and Southeast Asia, where the tech and fintech sectors are growing. Targeting some good firms Google, Amazon, Stripe. The major goal is to pull out best pool of smart minds.

Long-Term: I will defiantly plan to scale my venture globally, starting with India and expanding into Global Markets.

Hi Manish Goyal
Priyanka here from ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, two years of tech experience and a 625 FE looks good. You have some strong schools in your list. Each of your target schools has its own strengths: LBS has a global focus while HEC has strong corporate connections. While ESSEC is known for its international outlook, IE for its entrepreneurial spirit.

The adcoms will want to see how your tech background and academic achievements translate into strong management potential. How do you plan to show these schools that you have the drive and analytical skills needed to thrive in their programs, especially given your goal of working at top tech firms like Google, Amazon, and Stripe?

Hi everyone, my name is Kadabra, and I’m seeking advice and recommendations from the GMAT Club community as I prepare for my MBA journey. I have almost six years of professional experience across the telecommunication, fintech, and insurance industries, working as a finance professional with expertise in financial reporting, analysis, and operations.

I hold a Second Class Upper degree in Accounting and recently achieved a GRE score of 332/340. Outside of work, I’m deeply passionate about social impact — I’ve managed two NGOs and founded my own nonprofit initiative, which has fed over 6,000 people in Ghana over the past five years.

I’m currently targeting MBA programs in Europe and a few schools in the U.S., with the goal of strengthening my leadership and strategic management skills. I’d greatly appreciate insights from the community on school selection, scholarships, and application strategy based on my profile.

Hi @Kadabra , I hope you are doing well! Wish you all the best for the schools you are yet to hear back from!

Your profile seems to have a good foundation in the insurance and financial services industry, with experience across multiple sectors, which can be leveraged for your post-MBA goals in consulting. However, your GPA of 68/100 might require additional context or mitigation, such as strong test scores (GMAT/GRE), certifications, or leadership experiences to strengthen your academic narrative. Your short-term goal to work with a consulting firm in the U.S. aligns well with MBA programs focused on global exposure and consulting pipelines. Be prepared to clearly articulate your long-term vision of starting a consulting firm in Africa and how the MBA will uniquely position you to achieve it. Highlight leadership roles, measurable impact, and transferable skills in your application.

If you’d like, we are happy to discuss more about your work experience, leadership skills, impact created, challenges faced, awards and achievements and extracurriculars to assess your chances to top B-schools and strengthen your application with impactful stories.
