Dr. X, who is the chair of the sociology dept, claims she saw a flying saucer. But since she is a sociologist instead of a physicist, she cannot possibly be acquianted with the most recent writings of our finest scientists that tend to discount such sightings, so we can conclude her report is unreliable.

Which of the following would be the most appropriate critisism of the author's analysis?

A. The author makes irrelevant attack on Dr.X's credentials
B. The author may not be a physicist and therefore may not be familiar with the writings cited
C. Even US Air Force cannot explain sightings of UFOs which were reported last year
D. A sociologist is sufficiently well educated to read and understand scientific language in a field other than her own
E. Incorrect

Please explain your answers if possible.

This looks like a typical "ad hominem" agrument in which a person makes a claim and their opponent attacks the character/circumstances/actions of the person making the claim. This attack is then taken to be evidence against the person in question.

In light of the above A is the answer.

A it is. Unwarranted personal attack to discredit one's claim

Ad hominem: marked by an attack on an opponent's character rather than by an answer to the contentions made
This is the definition by Webster dictionary. Obviously, this is latin.

In addition to Paul's definition: the phrase literally means "against the man" or "against the person."

The part in blue, I think will support my answer
