Can anyone please explain why A is wrong....." if Olympus has not undergraduate in science and engg...." than people do the same from Plateau clg and post graduate from Olympus...". because it is given that plateau clg has both science and engg in undergraduate. this is filling the gap and is the strengthener.

On the other hand if plateau clg has only undergraduate in Science and engg. only than we have no information about same in olympus clg. Thus have no impact...

Anyone please explain where my reasoning is wrong.

Can someone explain why B?

Even if plateau college had more specialization how would it have mattered?

Posted from my mobile device

It matters a lot .... :shocked :shocked

The conclusion states " Therefore, enrolling as an undergraduate at Plateau College..........." It nowhere mentions enrolling in Science/Engineering as such the options are wide and as Thakurdas has correctly stated...

The author states that " Typically, many graduates of Plateau College have gone on to pursue advanced degrees at Olympus. " it may be possible that graduation courses at Plateau College prepares them to pursue a Graduate program from Olympus ...

I completely disagree with B strengthening the argument.
The argument is:
Olympus postgraduates get good jobs
Many Plateau graduates go to Olympus
Therefore, Many Plateau graduates get good jobs

If Plateau offers only undegrad courses in science and engineering or if it also offers courses in other areas do not change the fact that many of its graduates go to Olympus, therefore the information is irrelevant.

On the other hand, if the only way into Olympus postgrad in S&E is after graduating at another school, the argument becomes stronger.

Every person who earned a postgraduate degree in science or engineering from Olympus University last year received numerous offers of excellent jobs. Typically, many graduates of Plateau College have gone on to pursue advanced degrees at Olympus. Therefore, enrolling as an undergraduate at Plateau College is a wise choice for students who wish to ensure success in their careers.

Which of the following most strengthens the argument given above?
A. Olympus University does not have undergraduate courses in science and engineering.
B. Plateau College offers undergraduate courses only in science and engineering.
C. Plateau College is not the best places in the state to study science and engineering at the undergraduate level.
D. Olympus University is the best place in the country to study science and engineering at the postgraduate level.
E. People who want excellent jobs tend to study science or engineering at college or university.

Can anyone give an elaborate explanation on why A is incorrect and B is correct?

A. Olympus University does not have undergraduate courses in science and engineering.
If OU doesnt have those courses then it makes sense that students will enroll in PC or else why there is a need to do those courses from PC. Therefore this is strengthening the argument.

B. Plateau College offers undergraduate courses only in science and engineering.
This answer makes sense to some extent but not very clear. It is basically saying that PC has those courses after which if they go to OU they ll get good offers. And if PC has only those two courses then students will be forced to take those courses only. But this doesnt say that OU doesnt have those courses.

Please explain.

Thanks, :)

I guess few folks here missed out on a critical piece of linkage.

Post Grads in Engg and Science from Oly Uni get great jobs. Many grads (Read as anywhere from 1% to 100%) out of ALL Grads (read as Engg, Science, Business, Biology, etc) of Plateau College went to Oly Uni later on for post grad.

Conclusion: If you go to Plateau College as an undergrad, you have good chances of getting jobs.

Logical jump: Plateau College (any degree) -> Good jobs

Assumptions: (Backtracking) Good jobs <- Oly Uni post grad in engg and science <- Plateau College (engg and science undergrad)

If you look at the logical jump in the conclusion and the assumptions, you will notice that it is not necessary for any undergrad to go to OLy Uni. For example, if X is business major in Plateau, he/she need not go to Oly Uni. This means that the author cannot conclude that it is wise for X to join Plateau since they will get a good job.

So to make the argument's conclusion airtight, B is the best strengthener.

Hope that helps!

ARGUMENT
[prem] many undergrads at PC pursue advanced degrees at O;
[prem] every post-grad in engineering and science at O received numerous offers;
[con] so, enrolling as undergrad at PC ensures career success;
[asum] assumes that those at PC pursuing advanced degrees at O were in engineering and science, and not something else.

STRENGTHEN
A. O hasn't UNDERGRAD in science and engineering, out of scope;
C. PC undergrad S&E prog is not the best, irrelevant;
D. O is the best for postgrad in S&E, doesn't mean those in PC pursue advanced degrees in S&E at O, irrelevant;
E. irrelevant.

Answer (B): if PC only offers undergrad S&E then those pursuing advanced degrees at O have to be S&E majors, which means career success.

Prethinking: all undergdautes will get placed in Olympus or only science and engineering

Answer shd bridge this logical weakness.

A case in hand is plateau not Olympus. Irrelevant .Out
C weakens. Out
D same reasoning as A. Out

E is a mild strengthener. Morever, this introduces excellent jobs to successful career in the conclusion. It may happen that certain ppl don't have excellent jobs but may have successful career. This is irrelevant to our reasoning.

B matches prethinking.

Only B and C talks of platue college. However C weakens the argument that uts wise to take admission in platue college. Thus b is the only best choice here.

B. Plateau College offers undergraduate courses only in science and engineering.
Entire argument is about people studying postgraduate degree in science or engineering from Olympus University getting more offers.
if Plateau college offers other courses then the conclusion that enrolling in the college without mentioning the course will not work. So B- offer strength to the conclusion by clearing the mentioned problem
