Alicia scored an A on 30% of her first g tests during the semester. Deciding to improve her grade, Alicia works hard and scores an A on each of her remaining h tests during the same semester. If Alicia scored an A on 50% of her tests over the entire semester, which of the following expresses the ratio of g to h?

Given, 0.3g*A +h*A = 0.5*(g+h)*A
or, 0.5*h = 0.2*g
so, g/h = 5/2. I think D.

My answer is  (D). 5:2

Translate the word question into an equation, we have:

(0.3g + h) / (g + h) = 1/2
-> 0.6g + 2h = g + h
-> 0.4g = h
-> g/h = 1 / 0.4 = 5/2

Solution  -
Let  g be 10 tests . 30% of 10 = 3 had a score of A.

Let the next 4 tests have a score of A. I.e  h = 4

Thus, total 14 tests.
3 + 4 = 7 of these have a score of A. Which makes score of A on 50% of her tests.

Now ratio of g:h = 10:4 i.e 5:2

Answer should be Option D

Now g is 100; h is 40-->> g:h=5:2

(0.3g + h)/(g+h) = 0.5

IMO option D is the answer .

From the first statement we know that Alicia scored in 30% of first g tests
So she scored an A in 0.3g tests
She scored an A on each of h tests 
So total number of tests = h+g
Total no of A = 0.5(h+g) (Alicia scored 50% of her tests over the entire semester)
From the above information we can conclude:
0.3g + h = 0.5(h+g) —— (equating the no. of tests in which she scored A)
Solving the above equation we get:
g/h = 5/2

So the answer will be D
