The first boldfaced portion introduces Walmart’s transition to an online-first model, setting the context for the argument rather than stating a claim or evidence, so option A, which says the second is the central claim, is incorrect. The second boldfaced portion explains that expenses like warehouse rentals and salaries contribute significantly to fixed costs, providing evidence supporting the prediction that fixed costs will likely decrease; this aligns with option B’s description. Option C incorrectly treats both portions as evidence, but the first is background, so it’s wrong. Option D claims the first sets context and the second identifies the subject of the prediction; since the second part points to what fixed costs are affected, this is also accurate. Option E suggests the first identifies the subject of the conclusion, which is less precise because it mainly provides background. Thus, both options B and D accurately describe the roles, but D better emphasizes the second portion’s role in identifying the subject of the prediction rather than just providing evidence, making D the best choice.

First boldfaced portion: "Walmart has recently begun transitioning from its traditional warehouse-based retail model to an online-first model."
Second boldfaced portion: "expenses such as warehouse rentals and in-store salaries have historically contributed significantly to Walmart's fixed costs."
The main conclusion of the argument is: "This is quite likely" (referring to the prediction that the shift will lead to a reduction in fixed costs).
The first boldfaced portion introduces the context or background information for the argument - it tells us what change Walmart is making.
The second boldfaced portion provides evidence that supports the main conclusion. It explains why the shift to an online model would likely reduce fixed costs (because warehouse rentals and in-store salaries have been significant fixed costs).
Looking at the answer choices:
A. The first introduces the context for the argument, the second is the kentral claim the argument attempts to justify.
The first part is correct, but the second boldfaced portion is not the central claim - it's evidence supporting the claim.
B. The first presents an issue that the argument seeks to evaluate; the second provides evidence in support of a prediction made in the argument.
The first boldfaced portion doesn't present an issue to evaluate - it states a fact about Walmart's transition. The second part is correct.
C. Both the first and the second provide evidence in support of the main claim.
The first boldfaced portion is context, not evidence.
D. The first establishes the context for the argument's evaluation; the second identifies the subject of that prediction.
The first part is correct, but the second boldfaced portion doesn't identify the subject of the prediction - it provides evidence.
E. The first identifies the subject of the main conclusion; the second provides evidence supporting that conclusion.
This accurately describes both boldfaced portions.
The correct answer is E

This is quite likely, since expenses such as warehouse rentals and in-store salaries have historically contributed significantly to Walmart’s fixed costs.

Conclusion = This is quite likely = this shift will lead to a reduction in the company’s fixed costs

B. The first presents an issue that the argument seeks to evaluate; the second provides evidence in support of a prediction made in the argument. First is not being evaluated, it is a fact
C. Both the first and the second provide evidence in support of the main claim. BF2 is not supporting the conclusion
D. The first establishes the context for the argument's evaluation; the second identifies the subject of that prediction. This is the answer
E. The first identifies the subject of the main conclusion; the second provides evidence supporting that conclusion. BF1 is not the conclusion

clearly in both cases we have a conclusion ie the first one provides subject and the second evidence ,hence option E is the best option.

Argument:
Boldface 1: "Walmart has recently begun transitioning from its traditional warehouse-based retail model to an online-first model."
Boldface 2: "This is quite likely, since expenses such as warehouse rentals and in-store salaries have historically contributed significantly to Walmart’s fixed costs."

Structure of the Argument:
Background/context: Walmart is shifting from physical to online-first.

Question/issue raised: Will this lead to a reduction in fixed costs?

Claim/prediction: Yes, it's likely.

Support: Because expenses like warehouse rentals and in-store salaries (associated with the old model) made up a large part of fixed costs.

Roles of Boldfaced Parts:
Boldface 1 provides context or background for the argument—it sets up the situation being discussed.

Boldface 2 is used as evidence supporting the claim that fixed costs will likely decrease.

Evaluate the Answer Choices:
A. The first introduces the context for the argument; the second is the central claim the argument attempts to justify.
Incorrect. The second boldface is not the central claim; it supports the claim that fixed costs will likely decrease.

B. The first presents an issue that the argument seeks to evaluate; the second provides evidence in support of a prediction made in the argument.
Incorrect. The first doesn't present an issue—it provides context (a change in business model). The issue is posed in the next sentence (about fixed costs).

C. Both the first and the second provide evidence in support of the main claim.
Incorrect. The first is not evidence, just background/context.

D. The first establishes the context for the argument's evaluation; the second identifies the subject of that prediction.
Incorrect. The second doesn’t just identify the subject of the prediction—it supports the prediction (by listing reasons fixed costs might decrease).

E. The first identifies the subject of the main conclusion; the second provides evidence supporting that conclusion.
Correct.

The subject of the main conclusion is Walmart and its cost structure as it transitions to an online-first model.

The second boldface provides evidence: it lists expenses that could be reduced under the new model.

Final Answer: E

First Bold
'Walmart has recently begun transitioning...'
This is the context or background. It introduces a new development or change in Walmart's operations.

It is not a claim, not evidence, and not a conclusion.
It's just setting the scene.
So: First bold = context

Second Bold
"whether this shift will lead to a reduction in the company’s fixed costs"
This is the question or issue that the argument is addressing.
It is not the conclusion — the conclusion comes next: "This is quite likely..." It’s the topic the conclusion is trying to answer.
So: Second bold = the subject of the prediction / question being evaluated

D

The first boldfaced clause simply tells us what change is under consideration. the shift from a warehouse‐based to an online‐first model. So its job is to establish the context in which the rest of the discussion takes place. The second boldfaced phrase then zeroes in on the question the author is evaluating, which is 'will that change actually produce lower fixed costs?'. Together those two functions correspond exactly to choice D, which says that the first piece of boldfaced text 'establishes the context for the argument’s evaluation' and the second 'identifies the subject of that prediction.

All of the other answers miss one of those subtleties. Option A wrongly treats the second boldface as the conclusion itself, when in fact the conclusion ('This is quite likely...') comes immediately afterward. Option B mislabels the second boldface as evidence, though it merely names the issue under review. True evidence appears in the 'since expenses such as warehouse rentals...' clause. Option C claims that both bold‐text phrases provide evidence, but neither does. one is background and the other is a question. And option E correctly sees that the first phrase identifies the topic, but then mistakes the second for supporting proof rather than recognizing it as the very question the author goes on to answer. Answer is D!

A) Correct.
The first boldface states a recent shift in Walmart’s business model, setting up the context. The second boldface presents the main claim being evaluated—whether fixed costs will be reduced.

B) The first boldface is not an issue but a factual context. The second boldface is a claim, not supporting evidence.

C) The first boldface provides background, not evidence. The second boldface is the main claim, not supporting evidence.

D) The first boldface does correctly establish context. However, the second boldface is the prediction, not merely its subject.

E) The first boldface gives context, not the subject of a conclusion. The second boldface is actually the conclusion being supported, not evidence itself.

Answer: option (A).

A. The first introduces the context for the argument; the second is the central claim the argument attempts to justify.
The first part ("Walmart has recently begun transitioning...") does introduce context. The second part ("A question has arisen...") is a question or issue, not the central claim itself. The central claim/prediction is "This is quite likely" (referring to the reduction in fixed costs). So, this option is incorrect.

B. The first presents an issue that the argument seeks to evaluate; the second provides evidence in support of a prediction made in the argument.
The first part is more context than an issue. The issue is introduced in the second bolded phrase.

C. Both the first and the second provide evidence in support of the main claim.
Neither bolded part is direct evidence for the main claim (that fixed costs will likely be reduced).

D. The first establishes the context for the argument's evaluation; the second identifies the subject of that prediction.
The first part definitely establishes the context. The second part identifies the specific subject around which the prediction is made. This fits well.

E. The first identifies the subject of the main conclusion; the second provides evidence supporting that conclusion.
The first part is the context, not the subject of the main conclusion. The subject of the main conclusionis introduced in the second bolded part. The second part is the question/subject of prediction, not the evidence.

Lucas

Bold 1: Walmart has recently begun transitioning from its traditional warehouse-based retail model to an online-first model.
Bold 2: whether this shift will lead to a reduction in the company’s fixed costs
Conclusion: This is quite likely, since expenses such as warehouse rentals and in-store salaries have historically contributed significantly to Walmart’s fixed costs.

So bold 1 is giving us the context which is sounding that author wants to evaluate the decision
Bold 2 raises the question whether or not the decision will lead to certain goal
And the author states the conclusion

So D fits good in this structure of argument
The first establishes the context for the argument's evaluation; the second identifies the subject of that prediction.
E is not right because the evidence comes after the boldface and not in that statement.

Hence D is correct

BF1 - This statement sets the context for the argument
BF2 - This introduces a claim/premise that the argument is trying to justify, or in other words, the argument is trying to answer the question made in this claim

A. The first introduces the context for the argument; the second is the central claim that the argument attempts to justify.
  • This works with our pre-thinking. Keep
B. The first presents an issue that the argument seeks to evaluate; the second provides evidence in support of a prediction made in the argument.
  • The prediction made in the argument is "this is quite likely"; BF2 doesn't support it. In fact, the prediction is made to answer the claim in BF2. Eliminate
C. Both the first and the second provide evidence in support of the main claim.
  • The first is just a statement to set the context; it is not supporting anything. Eliminate
D. The first establishes the context for the argument's evaluation; the second identifies the subject of that prediction.
  • The second doesn't identify the subject of the prediction. It's the other way round, the prediction answers the claim made in BF2. Eliminate
E. The first identifies the subject of the main conclusion; the second provides evidence supporting that conclusion.
  • BF2 does not support any conclusion. Eliminate

A seems to be the best choice.
