First lets set up a number line with all four stops in order and set Harbor at 0 since it is the first stop.
Ridge is 3 times as farm from Harbor as it is from Summit, so
HR = 3* RS
If we look at the number line, we can see that Harbor to Summit is equal to the distance from Harbor to Ridge plus the distance from Ridge to summit, so:
HS = HR +RS. We can sub HR for 3*RS to get HS = 4*RS
Next, Since Maple is 4 times as far from Ridge as it is from Harbor:
MR = 4*MH
Again if we look at the number line, Maple is between Harbor and Ridge, so the distance from Maple to Ridge is equal to the distance between Harbor and Ridge minus the distance from Harbor to Maple:
MR = HR - MH = 3*RS - MH
When can then sub this information into our MR = 4*MH equation to get
3*RS - MH = 4*MH, so
3*RS = 5*MH or (3/5)*RS = MH
Finally we solve for the distance from Maple to Summit in terms of RS
Look at the number line one more time and we can see Maple is in between Harbor and Summit, so to get Maple to summit, we can subtract MH from HS so:
MS = HS - HM = 4*RS - (3/5)*RS = (17/5)*RS
The distance from Habor to Summit is 4*RS, so we divide MS/HS or ((17/5)*RS)/4*RS which gives you
17/20.
