Let the stops lie on a number line in order
H<M<R<S
where H - harbour, M= Maple, R = Ridge, S = Summit

Condition 1
Ridge is 3 time a sfar from harbour as it is from summit.
Lety RS = x

Then, HR = 3x
Therefore, HS = HR + RS = 3x + x = 4X

Condition 2

Maple is 4 times as far from Ridge as it is from Harbor

Let HM = y
then, MR = 4y

Since HR = HM + MR
3x = y + 4y
Thus, y = 3x/5

So, HM = 3x/5

Then,
MS = HS - HM
= 4x - 3x/5 = 17x/5

Required fraction,
MS/HS = (17x/5)/4x = 17/20

Answer - D (17/20)

i solved it using standard variables. H-M = 4. then M-R IS 16. hence H-R20 and r-s is 20/3

relation between h-s and m-s : 80/3 * k = 68/3

k = 17/20

Let distance from H~R Be 15a, R~S be 5a ( considering statement-1). similarly, H~M be 3b, and M~R be 12b(considering statement -2). if we observe distance from H~R in terms of a it is 15a, and in terms of B it is 15b ( 12b+3b). hence a=b. now the distance from M to S is 12b+5a = 17a ( since a=b). similarly, H~ S is 20a. so M~S/ H~S = 17/20.

I believe the answer is D. 17/20.

The distance from H-R/R-S = 3/1

The distance from H-M/M-R = 1/4

Taking 20 as assumed number, H-R = 15, and R-S = 15

H-M/M-R = 3/12

So, M-S/H-S = 17/20

Explanation:
Lets consider HARBOR to be the starting point.
so H=0
and the rest of the stops are in the following order as mentioned in the question: 0<M<R<S.

To find the fraction of the distances between H to S and S to M, we need to find S and M as, H=0 (starting point).

The distance between R and H is 3 times the distance between R and S.
Lets denote this as follows,
R-H= 3(S-R)
H=0, so R= 3(S-R)
R= 3S-3R
R+3R=3S
4R=3S
S=4R/3

Second information given in the question is
R-M = 4 (M-H)
R-M = 4M
R=5M
M=1/5R

Now to get the fraction (S-H)/(S-M)
Lets put the value;
for S-H
(4R/3 - 0) = 4R/3

for S-M
4R/3 -1R/5
=(20R- 3R)/15
=17R/15

Putting these values in the fraction needed
we get 17/20.

Let Harbor be H, Maple be M, Ridge be R and Summit be S.
We are given that:

<----------3y----------><---y--->
H--------M--------------R---------S
<---x----><----4x---->

That is: If the distance from Harbor to Maple = x, distance from Maple to Ridge = 4x
If the distance from Ridge to Summit = y, distance from Ridge to Harbor = 3y
And, 3y = x + 4x = 5x ----> (This can be inferred from above diagram)

We want to know what fraction of the distance from Harbor to Summit is the distance from Maple to Summit:
= $(4x + y) / 4y$
= $(4*3y/5) / 4y$ ------> (Substituting x = 3y/5)
= 17/20

IMO, the answer is D.

We have to find the fraction of distances bw H and S / M to S. Lets take RS = x; HR = 3X. MH = Y; MR = 4Y. Solving, we get 5Y = 3X. HS/MS = 5Y + X / 4y + X; solve : 20/17.

We will use the following alphabets for the names:
Harbour: H
Maple: M
Ridge: R
Summit: S

Question tells us:
They appear in the order: H - M - R - S

Distance b/w: R & S = 1/3 of distance between R & H
Distance b/w: M & R = 4* distance b/w M & H

Now let's work with this info:
Let, distance between M & H= A
Therefore, distance between M & R= 4A

Therefore, distance between H & R = 4A + A = 5A
And distance between R & S = (1/3)*5A

Now that we have all the values in terms of A, we look at the ratio we need to find which is:
(Distance b/w M & S) / (Distance b/w H&S)

Dist. b/w H&S= 5A + (1/3)5A = (20A)/3
Dist. b/w M&S= 4A + (1/3)5A = (17A/3)

Fraction:
=(17A/3)/(20A/3)
=17/20

Let us denote each stop by their first letter alone, i.e. H/M/R/S.
They appear in order H->M->R->S.

We are given:
HR=3*RS
4*HM=MR

We also know:
HR=HM+MR, therefore
3*RS=5*HM, or
