Let Harbor-Summit = x
Ridge is 3 times as far from Harbor as Summit

HR:RS = 3:1
So, Hr = 3x/4
Let Harbor-maple = m
Then MR = 3x/4 - m
Given MR = 4HM
3x/4 - m = 4m
m=3x/20

Maple-Summit = x- 2x/20
= 17x/20
Answer: D. 17/20

its D) 17/20

ans:
HR=3x
RS=x
RM=4y
HM=y
we have to find what fraction of HS is MS

Hs =4x , MS =4y+x and since HR=3x and also HR=5y
3x=5y gives us y=3x/5 substituing the values in 4y+x
we get Ms =17x/5 and since HS is 4X the fraction needed becomes 17/20 .

When it is mentioned that it is along the same order mentioned, it gives us the relationship between H and R as 3x and R and S as 1x.
Similarly the relation between H and M is 1y and M and R as 4y. Now we have to find out fraction of H to S and M to S. so clearly H to S is bigger and far than M and S so only one option has a fraction with numerator greater than denominator.

That is option E.

Along a straight coastal road, four stops, Harbor, Maple, Ridge, and Summit, appear in that order. Ridge is 3 times as far from Harbor as it is from Summit. Maple is 4 times as far from Ridge as it is from Harbor. What fraction of the distance from Harbor to Summit is the distance from Maple to Summit?

A. 3/20
B. 1/4
C. 2/5
D. 17/20
E. 20/17

H________________M_________________R_______________S

Let, H to R distance = 3x & R to S distance = x
Also, H to M distance = y. &. M to R distance = 4y

We need to find, (M to S)/(H to S)= 4y+x/4x

As we can see 4y=3x-y & 5y=3x or y=3x/5

MS/HS = 4(3x/5)+x/(4x) = (12x+5x)/20x =17x/20x =17/20

D. 17/20

I think its d 17/20 as according to the given information maple is just a bit away from harbour, which implies that M-S will only differ by a bit from H-S, hence the fraction needs to have the largest numerator

I think option d - 17/ 20
- So ,, H ----- M ------ R ------ S thats the frame so RS = X then HR =3X ,
- AND , HM = Y then MR = 4Y
- now if HM = 3 then MR = 4*3 = 12
- and ,, now HM + MR = HR = 12+3 =15 = 3X then x = 15/3 = 5 =RS
- now ,, HS - 15 (HR) + 5 (RS) = 20 & MS = 12 (MR) + 5 (RS) = 17
- ** I feel now most people do mistakes over the last line where " what fraction of distance is Hs is the distance of MS"
- If we put in simple words is what fraction of A is B that means B / A ** so now it means
- || MS / HS which is 20 / 17 ||
I did with this method if anyone has any other or better approach feel free to share : )

Lets denote stops as H, M, R and S. Based on given info M is 4 times as far from R as it is from H. So if HM=1, MR=4. i.e HR=5.
R is 3 times as from H as it from S. i.e. RS = 1/3 of HR. So RS=5/3.
question is looking for MS/HS -> (4+5/3)/(5+5/3) = 17/20.

\frac{MS}{HS}

=\frac{ (4y+x)}{(4x)}
using, 5y=3x (from figure)
= \frac{17x}{20x} =\frac{17}{20}

Let distance between H and M be d1 and M and R be 4*d1.
Similarly teh distance between R and S be d , and H and R be 3d.

And from teh first 2 statements we get that 5d1=3d.
So the ratio of M-S/ and H-S is d1/ 4d=(3/5d)/4d= 3/20

5y = 3x; y = 3x/5

The distance from Harbor to Summit = 4x
The distance from Maple to Summit = 4y + x = 4*3x/5 + x = 17x/5

The distance from Maple to Summit / The distance from Harbor to Summit = (17x/5)/4x = 17/20

Let the stops be in the given order: H---M---R---S.
Now,
Given that, Distance from H---R = 3 times of distance from R---S
Hence, assuming R---S = x
H---R = 3x
Also,
Given that, Distance from M---R = 4 times distance from H--M
Hence, assuming H--M =y
M---R = 4y
But,
H---R = H--M + M--R
3x = y + 4y
hence, y = 3x/5
To calculate, Distance of M---S is what fraction of total distance (i.e H-----S)
M---S = M--R + R--S = 4y + x
Putting the value if y = 3x/5,
M--S = 12x/5 + x = 17x/5

Now, H---S = H--R + R---S = 3x + x = 4x
Hence, M--S / H--S = (17x/5)/4x = 17/20.
Thus, the correct answer is (D) 17/20

We can solve it by drawing a line with 4 stops. I take x as a route from Ridge to Summit, 3x as a route from Ridge to Harbour. As a way not to spread confusion, I mark the route Maple - Harbour as y, then Maple-Ridge as 4y.

---H---M----R----S
\_____/ \__/
3x. x
\___/\__/
y 4y

By looking at the scheme, we can calculate the Harbour-Summit route as 4x, which would be the numerator.
Then we need to find the distance M-S, which is 4y+x, we calculate y as: H-R = 5y = 3x => y = 3x/5
We have: 4x / (4y + x) => 4x / (x+ 12x/5) => 20x/17x Which is our ratio.

H____M___R____S

now assume the distance between R and S = x
so distance between H and R = 3x

say, distance between M and H= y
so distance between M and R= 4y

find: M to S distance / H to S distance?

we know H to R= 3x and R to S= x.
so H to S =4x

now M to R= 4y and R to S = x
so total = 4y + x

we also know that 3x = 5y (HR = HM+MR)
so y= 3x/5

put Y into X and get the fraction:

4(3x/5) +x / 4x

upon solving, we get = 17/20

choice D

If distance from R to S is x, then then R to H is 3x. If distance from M to H is y then M to R is 4y. Hence 5y is equal to 3x. So fraction of 4x which is equal to 4y + x (=17x/5) is 17/20

h---m----r---s

also known that r to s is x so distance h to r is 3x
distance m to r is y and m to r is 4y

we can say 3x= 5y
x= 5/3 * y
ratio target
4y+x / ( 5y+x)
substitute value of x
12y+5y / ( 15y+5y)
17/20

H-M-R-S are the four stops along the route. We need to solve for MS/ HS. Based on the information given, we know HR=3RS and MR=4 HM. If we say HM=1 unit, we know MR is equal to 4 units.

This gives us a distance of 5 units for HR which equals HM+MR. Since HR =3RS, we can say HR/3 or 5/3=RS. This gives use H-1-M-4-R-5/3-S. Multiplying each value by 3 to gives integers gives us H-3-M-12-R-5-S. Solve for MS=17 and HS=20 giving option D
