I agree. I saw the relationship to be pretty linear between all sections on the GMAT.

Hi mcelroytutoring,

I beg to differ with your conclusion on verbal being disproportionately rewarded. In Focus edition, the total score has always been based on sum of scores across sections and no section is weighed differently than others.

Even in the couple of cases you compared:
Case-1: 695/805 (Q90, V82, DI82): Total:254
Case-2: 715/805 (Q83, V90, DI83): Total:256

The difference of 2 pointers led to the overall increase in score of 20.

Up for your thoughts!

carcass i confirmed with calculator you shared in the link. V82 is equivalent to V35 of old version.
Should it be the case now that more no of candidates score higher percentile in verbal than in old version they score ?

we should have more official numbers to say that. If they score higher on average thic could suggest that now verbal is easier.

Frankly, I think is more difficult now than before.

Something I found through my mocks and thought I would share.. While reviewing and editing questions, I went back to Q4 in DI and despite marking a new answer, I see the Q4 as unanswered.. I did not see much of an impact in percentile (though there was), I ended up with a 78 (73rd percentile)

Anyone else faced a similar situation?

Hi RahulJain293,

That is a little strange, as it should be impossible to leave a question unanswered in the middle of questions that you have attempted. Maybe some kind of bug in the official practice tests? I recommend that you reach out to the customer support people at mba.com and ask them whether they can do something about this.

Hi RishS94

A test taker can't move to the next question without marking an answer, and that original answer doesn't change until the test taker makes an edit and confirms the change, so the original answer should still have been in the system. However, it should be possible to confirm whether the practice tests work like this.

One comment I'm hearing from a lot of early GMAT Focus test-takers is that they did not put enough time into considering when to take the optional 10-minute break.

Remember that on the Focus, you are only given one break—after either the first or second section—and that if you do not select an option on the screen that appears after the first section, then the first break will be granted automatically, forcing you to go straight from the 2nd to 3rd section.

Personally, I would choose 1) Verbal, 2) Quant, 3) Break, 4) Data Insights. I'm sure I would be tired by the end of the second section, which occurs approximately 1.5 hours into the exam, and would want to stretch my legs / use the restroom / splash some cold water on my face.

Plus, I've heard that the new DI section, which now includes Data Sufficiency questions in addition to IR-style questions, is tougher than the old Integrated Reasoning section, so I would want to compose myself beforehand.

In contrast, I don't see myself needing a break or being tired after just the first section, which is only 45 minutes long. Thus, I would make sure to decline the first break option before time expires, and to select the second break option instead.

The takeaway? Don't just decide on your section order in advance—decide when you are going to take the 10-minute break as well.

I think the Verbal scoring is easier now. I'm seeing person after person scoring well above 80.

Not really. After all, percentiles are based on how many test-takers score at a particular level. So, it's basically impossible for a greater percentage of test-takers to score above a certain percentile.

HOWEVER, the percentiles currently assigned to GMAT Focus Edition scores are not actual percentiles. They're predicted percentiles. So, it is possible that more test-takers than usual will score above the given percentiles if GMAC's predictions are off.

You have to be careful with absolute numbers because for whatever reason there’s not a lot of consistency between different sections.

For example,
Q82 - 86th percentile
V82 - 79th percentile
D82 - 96th percentile
This is the adjusted percentile table.

P.S. And V80 is a V29 😲

I think V83, but it might be a little higher. I'm seeing many people achieve high GMAT Focus Edition Verbal scores.

I logged on to my mba.com account this morning, and discovered this (grammatically incorrect) message regarding response times on the Official Score Reports for the GMAT Focus.

"Notice: If you took a GMAT Focus Edition exam, please note the response times reflected in your Official Score Report may be inaccurate. We are actively working on correcting the issue and updating the data. Scores and Percentiles have not been impacted."

RahulJain293 Yes, I had a similar issue. I was working on changing one of my original answers when time ran out, but didn't confirm, and I was surprised that it counted as "unanswered". I think it's a bug; I hope that the actual test would count the answer. We can see whether anyone reports this issue on their ESRs on actual tests.

Thanks Ben! Yup I gave my exam and chose not to make any edits last 30-40 seconds just to be on the safe side!
