Closing the loop on this - the exam isn't adaptive across sections. Hurray!

Thanks to BottomJee for sharing the above and putting an end to my misery.

Hi Sim_SG3,

This is a very long video. Could you please point me to the moment where she says this?

Too bad she couldn't get the slide deck to load.

This will be news to me because I swear I have observed a relationship between the sections… Maybe it’s the power of mental persuasion. But I’m also happy to reach out to GMAC again to clarify if we find some discrepancy 👍

Hi mcelroytutoring,

Seema confirms this somewhere around the 32:50 minute mark when answering questions from the live chat. She seems very certain, even going on to state that the test is "question by question adaptive within a section".

It definitely would have been nice to see the slides.

Maybe it would be better to get something from GMAC in writing? I haven't found any other official source confirming this.

Thanks,
Sim

just gave 1st free focus edition mock.
V82 is a good score ?
in focus edition, one would mostly face 3 RCs ?
quant got me completely. I guess level is increased in focus edition. Got Q78. Dont how good q78 is.
In data insight, i mostly guessed the answers since i am not prepared in IR .Though DS questions were easily (of course, since i am guessing other ones )

BEST PART, all questions in V and Q were fresh and did not appear on classic edition mocks.

Hi,

This is just to add to the above note mentioned by Sim_SG3. I had the same conversation with GMAC regarding the adaptivity of sections in the new Focus Edition over the mail where they mentioned that GMAT both forms are Questioned Adaptive, not Section Adaptive. But I feel that we must ask the Students or Instructors who recently appeared for the Focus Edition for the second confirmation.

Thanks!

Thank you. I will pose this question for the GMAC and see if I can get an answer.

Last time it took about a week or 10 days. Hopefully I can hear back sooner. 🤞

Hi,

This is just to add to the above note mentioned by Sim_SG3. I had the same conversation with Seema Parakkat (Associate Manager Outreach – South Asia, GMAC) regarding the adaptivity of sections in the new Focus Edition over her official mail where she clearly mentioned that GMAT both forms are Questioned Adaptive not Section Adaptive. But I personally feel that we must ask the Students or Instructors who had recently appeared for the Focus Edition for the second confirmation.

Thanks!

Hi NaveenGJ

Thank you for sharing such a comprehensive analysis of your test experience and the meticulous journey you undertook in preparation.

I would be grateful if you could extend your insightful analysis to the Quant section, similar to what you've done for the Verbal section. Specifically, delving into the distribution of questions across different units—such as Algebra, Arithmetic, Co-ordinate, Counting, and others—would provide readers with valuable additional insights. Your detailed breakdown would undoubtedly enhance the overall understanding of the test nuances.

Actually quant was one area which I prepared the least as I was naturally good at it. I just brushed my high school concepts on Set theory, PnC, probability, Venn diagram. There is a book which is way above the level of GMAT quant but is very commonly used in India for engineering entrance exams (Arihant Algebra for IITJEE Mathematics). I referred to this book. Apart from that I solved medium and hard level questions of GMAT OG a day before the exams.

Need advice/suggestions.

Should I practice the same types and kinds of questions for quant section as did for classic gmat ( excluding geometry ) ?
In Data Insight, One can expect the same types and kinds of DS questions other than geometry as it was in Classic gmat ?
what will be the right source for practicing DI questions ?
Any updates on when gmat club has DI practice question bank section ?

carcass Thank you for the confirmation and sharing the link.

In verbal, what score should be equivalent to classic GMAT v 35 to v 40?
I gave first official mock and got V82(79th percentile) . Is it an average verbal score as per the focus edition standards or a good one ?
In verbal, one is likely to face 3 RCs ?

what could be the competitive score for quant and DI ?

Finally, an example of a full GMAT Focus ESR! Thank you for sharing, NaveenGJ.

GMAC was right: the new Enhanced Score Reports are clearly better than the paid option for the classic GMAT. You can now see approximately how long you spent on each question, and whether you answered it correctly or incorrectly!

There is also a "Question Review and Edit Summary", which allows you to see how many questions you reviewed, how much time you spent doing so, how many (of the 3 possible) answers that you changed—and whether you switched the answer(s) to the correct one(s).

For the record, Naveen's total score of 695/805 is 98%. He scored a perfect 90/90 on Quant (100%), with a stellar 21/21 correct. He also scored 82/90 on Data Insights (94%), with 15/20 correct—and 82/90 on Verbal (79%) with 16/23 correct.

Also worth noting: compare Naveen's performance to another recent example of 83Q, 83DI, 90V, which converted to a 715/805 total score (99%). This suggests that high Verbal scores, which are rarer than high Quant and Data Insights scores, will continue to be disproportionately rewarded in the GMAT Focus composite score conversion.

UPDATE: Another GMAT tutor has reported scoring 755/805 with 90Q, 83DI, and 89V—which adds to the small set of available data about GMAT Focus score combinations and conversions at the high end.
