Hi aashigarg,

We last discussed your studies in December, 2020 - and at that time, it appeared that your general 'ability level' was in the low-600s. With these recent results, it appears that you honed your Verbal skills a bit - but the inconsistency with your Quant Scaled Scores implies that 'your way' of approaching the Exam leaves you open to making certain types of mistakes. It's possible that you developed some 'bad habits' during your earlier studies that are currently keeping you from scoring higher.

Before we discuss these two CAT results in more detail, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying over the last year and your goals:

Studies:
1) Did you end up taking the Official GMAT in February (and if you did, then how did you score - including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores)?
2) Over the last 3 months, how many hours do you typically study each week?
3) What study materials have you used over the course of ALL of your studies? What “brands” of CATs/mocks have you used?
4) In 2021, on what dates (or approximate dates) did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
5) What is your current goal score?
6) What are your current application plans?

Dear Rich,

Hope you are doing well. Thanks for remembering my case from 2020.

I analysed my study patterns and noticed that I had very significant work to do in verbal due to which I focused on doing most of 600-700 level questions in verbal. I feel SC is still my weak area. I have started working with Manhattan SC and do all OG questions on Gmat Club forum related to that. The inconsistency in the Quant score is due to Data Sufficiency .

1) I gave GMAT in April and score Q44 and V22. It was horrible and I gathered courage to work on it again from October 2021. I believe something went really bad in study preparation strategy earlier. Hence, I have changed it to be practice incentive on Medium & Hard level questions.

2) My strategy now is to work on SC and DS 600-700 level questions and take a Manhattan Mock next week. I have been studying for 6 hrs every day for the last 3 weeks ( Verbal - CR & RC focused).

3) I have been studying through GMAT CLUB forum - focused on OG questions. (Medium Level) and cementing weak topics through GMAT club videos on GMAT Club.

4) I took the 3 Official Mocks and one Manhattan Mock.

My current goal score is 680 - 700+.

Looking forward to your guidance based on the information:-

I am targeting to apply in SPJIPMR, ISB & BITSOM this year.

Not sure what do you mean by "Bad Habits". Please share more insights.

Hi Aashi, since you mention SC as your specific area of concern, thought I would mention that our sentence correction book Sentence Correction Nirvana is perhaps the only book that offers a score improvement guarantee, and is especially designed for non-native speakers.

After reading the book twice (yes! it's an academic book, and so must be read twice in all seriousness, to reinforce the concepts), you will start looking forward to solving SC questions!

The book is available on Flipkart and Amazon.in. You might want to refer to these sites, to also read testimonials of how readers have benefited.

You can als go thru this post on how Soubhik, who scored V51 (overall score 780), vouches for our book.

If you want to sample a chapter before deciding to go ahead with our book, please PM me your mail-id (along with the chapter that you would like to sample) and I will be happy to send that chapter to you by mail. In addition, the entire Grammar section of the book is also available for free preview at pothi.

Dear GMAT CLUB,

I gave two mocks for GMAT PREP. My scores are as follows:-
660 - Q49 V31
640 - Q45 V34

Below is the attached file I created for analysis.

Can anyone please guide me as to what should be my preparation strategy basis the details in the attached file?

Thanks Much,

Hi aashigarg,

For scoring 700 and above, you need to get the easy medium questions right as GMAT test is adaptive in nature. You can afford making mistakes only in the latter half of the Section, not in the beginning. You have to make the GMAT algorithm serve you difficult questions and get them right. For that, being conceptually clear on all topics is really vital. Not only this, you have to be good with application of concepts because GMAT is a test of application of concepts.

As evident from your score breakup and analysis, you have a good command over Quant, just a bit more methodical application of concept would help you get a Q50. DS appears to be your weaker section in Quant.DS questions are tricky as there are a lot of traps set by the test makers. Students generally tend to directly jump into solving individual statements after reading the question stem, which is not the right process. After reading the question stem, they have to do a certain pre-analysis on the question stem. For example, if the question stem says x, y and z are in arithmetic progression, we generally tend to assume x, y and z as integers. That’s the basic mistakes students do. It’s never mentioned in the question that they are integers. X can be 0.5 or 2/3 or any value. And sometimes students tend to ignore a few cases such as 0 and 1. All these things matter in DS questions. If you are struggling with any particular topic, you can share with me for help.

However, your Verbal score is an area of concern. You clearly need to work hard in case of Verbal and develop a solid understanding first by revisiting the concepts and then approach the problems in a systematic and logical method.

For GMAT Verbal, it is very important that you follow the right methodology and the logical approach. Your focus has to be on eliminating four incorrect choices rather than choosing the right one. The key is to develop a solid understanding of the concepts that are typically tested on the GMAT and master the process skills that are required to solve GMAT questions. Only then, you will be able to smartly avoid the traps set by the test makers and avoid taking too much time in solving questions.

Verbal questions on GMAT are very tricky. For example,
• In SC, you have to read the sentence from the meaning standpoint and then start looking at the grammatical errors.
• In CR, you have to understand the argument, identify the premise and the conclusion and then pre-think the answer before looking at the solutions.
• In RC, you need to have the right reading strategies to understand the inferences which are not directly stated in the passage.

This should help.

Finally, looking at your scores, there is a clear lack of consistency in your scores as well. One possible reason could be that you’re following too many sources of information and have now confused yourself. I would suggest you to only focus and study from one source, whatever it may be.
