The juvenile literacy rate, number of adolescents per 100 who are literate, in Keating has risen forty percent over the previous three years ago. In Nickleby, the juvenile literacy rate has risen only twelve percent over the same time period. This data supports the conclusion that adolescents growing up in Keating are more likely to become literate than are adolescents growing up in Nickleby.

The argument above is flawed because it fails to take into account

A. how the juvenile population density of both Keating and Nickleby has changed over the past three years
B. what the juvenile literacy rates of Keating and Nickleby were three years ago
C. the change in the ratio of literate to illiterate juveniles three years ago and now in Keating and Nickleby
D. a comparison between the rate of juvenile population growth in Keating over the past three years and the corresponding rate in Nickleby
E. a comparison between expenditures on juvenile education made over the past three years in Keating and the same made in Nickleby

In spite of wide-ranging efforts to promote healthy dietary habits, the confectionery industry continued its rapid expansion last year, as evidenced by the sales of the dyes Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6, the three most common dyes used in commercial confection, which grew by thirteen percent to $8 billion.

In assessing the support provided by the evidence cited above for the statement that the confectionery industry continued to grow, in addition to the information above it would be most useful to know

A. whether all commodities in the wider economy increased in sales last year
B. the monetary value of Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6 sales the year before last
C. the confectionery industry’s response towards the efforts to promote healthy dietary habits
D. whether Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6 have any uses outside the confectionery industry
E. what effect the growth in the confectionery industry has on the dietary habits of the public

Sofia works at a museum gift shop for the same fixed number of hours each week. This week, she was paid 9 euros per hour plus an additional 3 euros for each postcard set she sold. Last week, she was not paid an hourly wage and was paid only a different fixed amount for each postcard set she sold.
If last week she sold 4 times as many postcard sets as she sold this week, did Sofia earn more money this week than last week?

(1) This week, the number of hours Sofia worked was equal to the number of postcard sets she sold.
(2) The amount Sofia was paid for each postcard set last week was greater than the amount Sofia was paid for each postcard set this week.

In the 1950s, a popular camping site became the subject of persistent rumors centered on the presence of extra-terrestrials. In a survey conducted at the site in 2020, it was found that approximately half of all visitors to the camping site that year were aware of the rumors and the second half was unaware. The survey also revealed that the first half consistently reported significantly more unusual experiences than the second half did. On the basis of this data, the surveyors’ concluded that supposed extra-terrestrial encounters generally stem from the pre-existing expectations of such an event occurring.

Which of the following, if true, would most seriously weaken the surveyors’ reasoning?

A. None of the visitors in the second half believed that the unusual experiences they reported were related to extra-terrestrials.
B. Those that the visitors in the first half reported their experiences to did not believe in the presence of extra-terrestrials.
C. Before visiting the camping site, the visitors within each group had considerably varied beliefs about extra-terrestrial life.
D. All of the unusual experiences reported by the visitors were caused by factors other than extra-terrestrials.
E. All of the visitors in the first half believed that the rumors regarding the presence of extra-terrestrials were hoaxes.

As do most printer manufacturers, Bi Sheng Printers makes most of its profits on ink cartridges, not the printers themselves. As Bi Sheng Printers cannot sell its ink cartridges as cheaply as other manufacturers can, it plans to modify its printers to only work with a newly designed Bi Sheng ink cartridge, which will cost as much as Bi Sheng Printers’ current ink cartridge does.

Which of the following, if true, most strongly supports Bi Sheng Printers’ projection that its plan will lead to an increase in its sales of ink cartridges?

A. First-time printer buyers tend to purchase the least expensive printers available.
B. In extensive test marketing, printer users did not find the new Bi Sheng printer any superior to the current Bi Sheng printers.
C. A Bi Sheng executive is studying cost reduction methods, pertaining to manufacturing ink cartridges.
D. A rival manufacturer recently announced similar plans to introduce a printer that would work with only the ink cartridges produced by that manufacturer.
E. The total number of printers sold annually by all manufacturers is expected to double over the next four years.

Rina commutes between her apartment and her office in one of two ways: she can bike to the office and back along the Greenway Trail at a constant speed, or she can take the shuttle to the office and back along the Cityline Route at a constant speed. How many minutes does it take Rina to bike from her apartment to her office?

(1) When Rina bikes from her apartment to her office and then takes the shuttle back to her apartment, the total distance she travels is 7 kilometers, and her average (arithmetic mean) speed for that entire trip is 30 kilometers per hour.

(2) When Rina takes the shuttle from her apartment to her office and then takes the shuttle back to her apartment, the total distance she travels is 8 kilometers, and her average (arithmetic mean) speed for that entire trip is 40 kilometers per hour.

A drain pump can remove water from a storage tank at a constant rate of n liters per hour, while an inlet valve can add water to the tank at a constant rate of m liters per hour, where n > m. If both start operating at the same time when the tank contains exactly 168 liters of water, how many hours will it take for the tank to become empty?

(1) n - m = 24
(2) After 3 hours of both operating, the tank contains 96 liters of water.
