Hi guys,

I have started preparing for GMAT from April 2023, I took a lot of time understanding each concept and how to solve in Quants and practiced multiple question in Verbals. I have attempted 3 mocks from Manhattan Prep. Score have been 500,550 and 410.
At this moment under time I am unable to solve quickly and get things right but when I do try to solve without the time constraint I do get most of the incorrect ones correct. I even miss out on last few questions as the time runs out before I can attempt it.
Few things that I have analysed is:
1) RC : I miss out on core details when I attempt specific questions and end up reading certain sections of the passage for the 2nd time
2)Quants : I’ve been trying to solve questions by putting my pen on paper and I feel that really takes a lot of my time during mock. The other thing is I’ve been making silly mistakes when it come to DS questions (specifically yes/no type) and sometime my logic is wrong and by the time I figure it out I’ve already crossed my allotted time limit for that question. When the difficulty drops my accuracy goes down since I’m constantly looking at the time. I usually start of with a 40+ on quants but end with 30’s in the last question; Almost similar in verbal section as well.
I need some guidance on how do I strategise my next step. I am looking forward to a 730 score on my exam. But I’m just confused on how to achieve it.

I would greatly appreciate if you guys could share/suggest some study patterns or strategies that would help me get to a 730 or more.

Thank you

It looks like your primary challenge is a firm grasp of the fundamentals, especially under time constraints. This might be leading to second-guessing during the exam. Before moving on to more practice tests, it could be beneficial to reinforce your understanding of the basic concepts. Once you're confident with these, start practicing with questions of increasing difficulty levels, but only move to harder questions when you can comfortably solve easier ones within the time limit.

Regarding RC, try to be an actively engaged reader. This might help in retaining core details and reduce the need to re-read sections.

Remember, a steady build-up from the basics to more complex problems can be a more effective strategy for reaching your target score of 730. Good luck!

Hi AarasDhokiya,

Based on what you have described here, it seems as though you have some conceptual gaps that you need to address before you take any more practice exams. With that in mind, here is a great article you can check out:

Hi AarasDhokiya,

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

1) How many hours do you typically study each week?
2) What study materials have you used so far? Have you taken any of the 6 Official GMAC CATs/mocks yet?
3) On what dates (or approximate dates) did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?
4) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

Hi Rich,
Thank you for showing interest and trying to help me out, Appreciate your efforts. Please find the details below.
1) I try/tend to put in about 28-35 hours/week

2) I am currently using the following :
    a) GMAT OG 2021
    b) GMAT Critical Reasoning Bible - Power Score
    c) Manhattan Prep : Sentence Correction(6th Edition), Reading Comprehension(5th Edition),Critical Reasoning(5th Edition) & GMAT Advanced Quants(3rd Edition)
No I havent taken any of the 6 Official GMAT mocks yet, However i do plan on attempting for 1 soon.

3) I have currently taken 3 Manhattan Prep Mocks, the scores and the dates are :

    a) 21st July 2024- 500 (Q32 V27 IR4) [baseline mock]
    b) 25th August 2023- 550 (Q36 V30 IR2)
    c) 31st October 2023- 410 (Q32 V15 IR4)

4) I am planning for the 2025 intake and i have the top 20 schools in USA for MBA- Technology Consulting as my choice on interest ( M7 being the dream choice, But MIT sloan, NYU stern, Cornell & Georgia tech Scheller are the programs i am aiming for from the top 20.)

I am currently trying to give my GMAT exam before the current version of the test expires so i have time until 31st January 2024 to attempt it. I havent booked my exam slot yet seeing how my mock scores are not upto the mark with my goal score. I am looking for a 730+ just to be close/above the median score acceptance of each school, However anything higher would be awesome.

Hi Scott,
thank you for taking your time out to address my issue, Muy main concern stays at solving faster with a better accuracy and i feel confused on how to achieve clear that gap. When i try a 700+ level question without a time attack i solve it but under the time i flop it and start getting consecutive question wrong in my mock. I have a good start with a very bad end in the mock test. How do i overcome this issue ?

Hi,

Thank you for critically analysing my situation i believe youre correct, I will try to follow on the suggestion and update it here as i progress. However i am planning to give my GMAT exam before the current edition of it expires ( not a fan of the Focus edition) could you suggest something regarding the study plan or how to actively increase my level as my day passes and now to strategize my mock and the main exam.

Hi AarasDhokiya,

Studying for the GMAT now - far in advance of when you will actually "need" your Score - is a smart choice. In that same way, since you are interested in applying to some highly-competitive Schools, you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile and plans. Those Experts should be able to answer your Admissions questions and help define the specific areas of your profile that could use some improvement (and the more time that you have to act on that advice, the better). There's a Forum full of those Experts here:

https://gmatclub.com/forum/ask-admissio ... tants-124/

I've sent you a PM with some notes and additional questions.
