Hi all!
I currently have an opportunity to take on a fundraising volunteer role in a very small and new not-for-profit organization. However, I’m not super sure how fundraising generally works and was only referred by a friend because I have a finance background and am very into animal welfare (which this organization is for). I’m interested but a bit hesitant because it’ll take up some of my time. However if it proves to be a valuable thing for MBA admissions I can definitely find the time for it.
Was just wondering - how would such a volunteer role be viewed by admissions committees? Should mention too that I'm aiming for an M7 program years from now!
Thanks a lot!

Hi Spiderman,
what exactly would be your concern?
Is it about the role of fundraising? From an MBA application perspective- its good if you can raise substantive funds for the organization. Remember one thing- the stories you get to tell in the application are those where you worked hard and achieved an outcome. Therefore, a story that revolves around leadership (guiding a team, leveraging your contacts, overcoming challenges) would be more impactful than going on a crowdsourcing platform. B-schools want to see your leadership impact and achievement in everything you put down in the application and so long as you are able to achieve an outcome, (in this case $$) it should be ok. From a personal perspective, the activity you take up should be satisfying for you.
Your second concern could be that you have another opportunity lined up and you can give time to only one. In that case, you should evaluate where you can have more impact, and what ties with your interests more. You have about 5 to 9 months, depending upon whether you are doing R1 or R2 applications- evaluate where you can get working on the ground soon after joining.
The third concern could be whether you should do any volunteering at all? Well, yes, you should. Activities, where you help others and not just work towards your self-improvement (like learning a hobby), are always valued by b-schools. Having a mix of hobbies and other pursuits in your profile will make you a more interesting applicant.
Hope that helps.
