It has been improved in tests too. Do you see another version of this question? If so, could you please share a screenshot? Thank you!

Thanks for the response! I am able to view it correctly now in the analysis window, but the exam window did not have the sorting options. Wont be possible to go back to the exam window and hence unable to share screenshot. If possible, do check once at your end. Thanks!

The table below lists commercial cellulosic ethanol projects as of the 2017 report, when the United States had an annual production capacity of approximately 30 million gallons of cellulosic ethanol.

Project NameStateProduction Capacity (million gallons)FeedstockStatus
Ace EthanolWI3.0corn fiber celluloseUnder Construction
AemetisCA45.0nut wastesUnder Construction
ElementKS7.0corn fiber celluloseUnder Construction

Pacific EthanolCA1.0corn fiber celluloseOperational

Pacific EthanolCA1.0corn fiber celluloseUnder Construction
POET-DSMIA20.0crop residuesOperational
Quad County Corn ProcessorsIA2.1corn fiber celluloseOperational
Siouxland EnergyIA1.0corn fiber celluloseOperational

For each of the following statements, select Supported if it is supported by the information in the table. Otherwise select Not supported.

SupportedNot supported
If every project under construction is completed to specifications and delivers upon its production capacity as listed, United States cellulosic ethanol production will be more than triple that in 2017.
For under-construction projects, in terms of its share of total production capacity, corn fiber cellulose is becoming a more popular feedstock compared to its share in operational projects in 2017.
If all California (CA) and Iowa (IA) projects under construction are completed to specifications and deliver upon production capacity as listed, the percent increase in California ethanol production from 2017 would be more than 200 times the percent increase in Iowa ethanol production from 2017.

Statement 1:

The production capacity in 2017 was approximately 30 million gallons, while the production capacity of projects under construction is approximately 70 million gallons. Thus, once the under-construction projects are completed, the total production capacity will be approximately 100 million gallons, which is more than three times the initial 30 million gallons. Therefore, the first statement is supported.

Statement 2:

Corn fiber cellulose production in operational projects was approximately 10 million gallons out of a total of 30 million gallons, or about 1/3 of the total. For under-construction projects, corn fiber cellulose production is approximately 20 million gallons out of a total of 70 million gallons, which is less than 1/3 of the total. Therefore, the second statement is NOT supported.

Statement 3:

California ethanol production in 2017 was 1 million gallons, with projected production at 46 million gallons, corresponding to an increase of 4,600%. In Iowa, ethanol production in 2017 was 27.6 million gallons, with projected production at 8.5 million gallons, corresponding to an increase of approximately 30%. Since 4,600% / 30% is approximately 150, the third statement is NOT supported.

Correct answer:

If every project under construction is completed to specifications and delivers upon its production capacity as listed, United States cellulosic ethanol production will be more than triple that in 2017. "Supported"

For under-construction projects, in terms of its share of total production capacity, corn fiber cellulose is becoming a more popular feedstock compared to its share in operational projects in 2017. "Not supported"

If all California (CA) and Iowa (IA) projects under construction are completed to specifications and deliver upon production capacity as listed, the percent increase in California ethanol production from 2017 would be more than 200 times the percent increase in Iowa ethanol production from 2017. "Not supported"
Bunuel :
Though the ans for statement number 1 remains same, But statement asks only for United States cellulosic ethanol production.
Underconstruction: 20.5
Operational: 9.6
Total: 30.1
Greater than Triple of 2017.
Regards.

The statement refers to total cellulosic ethanol production, which includes all feedstocks, not just corn fiber cellulose. Your calculation seems to focus only on corn fiber cellulose, but the statement accounts for all sources of cellulosic ethanol. You're mistakenly equating cellulosic ethanol with ethanol derived solely from corn fiber cellulose, whereas the statement considers all feedstocks.

how do we know if the statement 1 question expects us to compare the total production of under construction against 30 or adding the 2 together vs 30? My understanding was that its the former.. Bunuel

Statement 1 specifically says:

"If every project under construction is completed... United States cellulosic ethanol production will be more than triple that in 2017."

This clearly refers to the new total production capacity (operational + under construction) after all under-construction projects are completed.

So the correct interpretation is to compare total future capacity (≈100 million gallons) against the 2017 level (≈30 million gallons), not just under-construction (≈70 million) alone. That’s why adding both is appropriate here.

California had 1 million gallons in 2017 and will have 1 + 46 = 47 million after new projects. The percentage increase is (47 - 1)/1 * 100 = 4,600%.
