If 280 people, constituting 5 percent of the population of a town, ride bicycles, and the others do not, then how many people in the town do not ride bicycles?

A. 5930
B. 5600
C. 5320
D. 5110
E. 4980

Kudos for a correct solution.

Let t be the total population ---> 0.05T = 280 ---> T =5600

People who do not ride the bicycles = 0.95T . Of all the options, only option C is close to 5600 while A,B are out as 0.95T can not be \(\geq T\). Options D and E are smaller and thus are out.

C is the correct answer.

5% constitutes 280, so 95% = 95%(280)/5% = 5320. Ans (C).

Method-1

280 = (5/100)* Total Population = Bicycle Riders

i.e. Total Population = 5600

i.e. People Not Riding Bicycle = 5600 - 280 = 5320

Answer: Option C

Method-2

Bicycle Riders = 5% of Population = 280

Non Bicycle Riders = 95% of Population = 19*5% of Population = 19*280 = 5320

Because, 95 = 19*5 so 95% = 19*5%

Answer: Option C

5 % of X is 280

5/100 * X = 280

X = 280*100/5 = 5600

So C. 5320 is the correct Answer
No. of people Not Riding Bike = 5600 - 280 = 5320

Let the population of town be x.

if 5% of x = 280, then x =>( 280 * 100 )/ 5 => x = 5600

95% of x = 100% of x - 5% of x = 5600 - 280 = 5320.

If 5 % == 280 (riding bicycle)
then 100 % == (100*280)/5, which gives 5600
Non-riding==95% == 5600 - 280 ==5320...Option C is right answer

800score Official Solution:

We are told that 280 is 5% of the population of the town. We can then write the following equation, where P is the population of the town:
280 = 0.05P.

Now we can solve for P:
280 = 0.05P
P = 280/.05 = 28000/5
P = 5600 people.

The number of people in the town who do not ride bicycles is the total number of people in the town minus the number of people in the town who ride bicycles:
5600 – 280 = 5320 people.

The correct answer is choice (C).

Letting n = the town’s population, we have:

0.05n = 280

n = 280/0.05 = 5,600

So 5,600 - 280 = 5,320 do not ride bicycles.

280 = (5/100) * x

280 = (1/20) * x

x = 280 * 20

95% of x = (280*20) * (95/100)
= (280*20) * (19/20)
= 280 * 19
= 280 * 20 - 280
= 5600 - 280
= 5320
