Hi arvindjasrotia,

You have very rich experience across multiple countries and almost all areas of the O&G value chain, both as a doer (on the rigs/sites) and the advisor (consultant role). The awards add to your repertoire! Minor gaps in such a long stint won't affect your chances as they can easily be explained.
The key would be to explain the technical experience and achievements in non-technical language in the essays so that reviewers from other sectors are able to appreciate the value you bring to the table.

In addition, do aim to get a 670+ on the GMAT as IIMs do consider the score as an important criteria.

I couldn't get a sense of your post-MBA goals. Happy to discuss further.

Hope this helps!

Cheers,
Manan

Hi, do you think I have a good chance of being shortlisted for IIM A -PGPX ?

I gave the online GMAT on 24.08.2020 and I scored 640 (Q47 V31)

Not too happy with my score, I decided to give another try , this time at a test center . My exam was yesterday and I improved my score to 700 (Q49 V35). Now, something about me- I am 29 years old, female and I am a Chartered Accountant in practice . I cleared in 2014, so that makes it 6 years of work-ex. I have always worked in a firm where a family member was a founding partner. ( Would working in a family owned firm be looked upon negatively ?) Since clearing my CA exams, I have obtained two additional post qualification diplomas from ICAI. Recently I have also cleared the Independent Director's exam conducted by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. My areas of practice range from Transfer Pricing,Audits, Income Tax to Project Financing . Since the past two years I have also appeared as an authorized representative before the National Company Law tribunal, so add a bit of litigation experience to my profile.

I missed the first round as I wasn't too happy with my score. Please help me in going about the process. Also, is the verbal score (V35) a problem

Request for profile evaluation:

10th Marks: 92% (State Board)
12th Marks: 85% (State Board)
B. Tech (Mechanical engineering): 8.24 DGPA from Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College (West Bengal)

GMAT 700(V37, Q49), IR 1

Work experience:

7 years of experience in design & engineering in Transformer manufacturing industry. [3 years in Transformers & Rectifiers (I) Ltd. 4 years in Hitachi Energy/ABB]. Primary responsibilities include design and development of mechanical features in Transformers, supporting global factories in design activities/mechanical simulations, working in few of the R&D, design to value projects. Though the profile looks very much technical, highlights of my career have been some interesting projects and few international exposures.

1. With my previous company, I was part of technology transfer collaboration team. Me along with my senior manager visited Fuji Electric factory in Japan for a week to understand & absorb the technology for single phase reactor. Also, successfully designed the similar transformer, which was later commissioned to Power Grid Corporation

2. I was the first recruit to support US factory of dry transformers in my current organization. I was sent to US for 3 months to learn the factory practices, manufacturing limitations, US design standards. Trained and mentored five more mechanical engineers for the same factory, now co leading the team.

3. I had a two week visit to Shanghai for a global team meet on ABB Mechanical Design Platforms. Successfully implemented the same in my ABB’s Vadodara transformer factory design team

Community:

In our college, we run a nonprofit night school, where we teach the local under privileged kids up to 10th standard. I participated in the field work, books and stationary distribution and taught the kids in the school.

Extra curriculars

I was the secretary of Drama club in my college. Successfully organized inter college drama competition. Awarded ‘best director’ in 2012 & 2013 drama festivals. Also, I actively participated organizing cultural events, took part in music club in college

1. If anyone could please evaluate my profile and chances of getting admit in IIM B/C/I or XLRI?

2. Though my GMAT overall score is 700, my IR scaled score is embarrassingly 1. How much weightage do the IIMs give to IR score?

3. Should I retake to improve my IR score? in case in the second attempt I score lower overall and I cancel it, will that have a more negative impact?

Why not? So long as you submit stellar applications that meet their criteria (GMAT, education scores, years of work experience) and show your softer skills - you have as good a chance as anyone else. Do bear in mind, the qualities b-schools want to see in applicants:
1. career progression and good achievements at work, preferably quantifiable.
2. feasibility and validity of your career goals
3. leadership - not just leading teams, but having the ability to influence other people and make things happen
4. Extra curricular achievements

Demonstrate these through your application and you will be in the race.

Hello Ananya0593,

You have a stellar GMAT score and have a strong chance of getting accepted to the Executive MBA provided you put forth a set of essays that truly demonstrate the strengths of your candidature while putting forth a set of career goals that sync with all that you have done so far. Needless to say, the most important thing you need to establish in a convincing manner is your need for a second MBA. Therefore, do remember to place adequate emphasis on the same.

Even if your managerial experience is not present on paper, in formal terms, be sure to highlight the same through your essays.

All the best!

Hi saumya1901,

Thanks for sharing your profile.

You have a brilliant profile. GMAT and academic scores are very good. The experience of working in BSF will be highly valued in IIMA. Also, your work as civil servant brings a different perspective to any cohort. Your extra curricular is also decent enough.

The gap in education is something which can be easily explained, so no worries there.

Overall, you are all set to succeed. Although, the post MBA goal will require some discussions.

You can register for a free session to discuss your profile and career choices in detail on our website, if you wish.

Best of luck!

rkhosla hope this finds you well.

You undeniably exhibit a broad spectrum of work experience, moving from a backend engineering position to advertising and then marketing to brands—a surefire indication of a fearless go-getter! I see immense potential for storytelling. You have been associated with brands with recall value during your whole career, which is positive. Definitely go ahead with the applications for the IIM PGP. It would be fantastic if you also have a solid set of short- and long-term focused objectives. This would show how well you have thought through the post-PGP scenario.

Best wishes

A)1.5 Years - Management trainee
B)0.5 Year - Duty Manager - Front desk operations

Why MBA: Gain marketing / E-commerce skillset and combine with Revenue management work experience.
Target Companies - AB InBev., Ola, Flipkart/Amazon, OYO ( All from top of my mind, Never said no to a new experience)

Fee: Not a deciding factor.
P.S. I am currently holding an admit for both B-Schools.

Hi sushant2143 hope this finds you well.

I hope you can decide based on a few other considerations in addition to the Fee factor.

1. IIM A cohort is a small cohesive community as compared to ISB which has 700+ seats. Since I graduated from INSEAD which is also a huge cohort, I wish the batch had been smaller to result in stronger bonding. It's a matter of preference.
2. Both are equally (less) diverse, as is expected of the Indian B Schools. I know 5 applicants from the same company with the same profile who all got accepted to both IIM A and ISB. I was more surprised about the plentiful IIM A admits in a drastically smaller cohort.
3. ISB would have some very young students in the MBA cohort with super active cognitive processes academically, while IIM A has a more even-handed selection across the age spectrum. Again, a matter of preference.
4. IIM A is a legacy brand; the alumni network is widespread, but the brand is still exclusive as the intake is smaller for PGPx and the extremely competitive nature of the flagship 2 yr program.
ISB is a global school in India, and that shows in the sheer number of ISB alumni you can find in most companies (in India, Middle East, SE Asia and in EU to some extent).

Best wishes
