Hello Bhanu612

PGPX is going to asses your profile on primarily 4 factors-
1) Academic Potential- you have decent past scores, and the GMAT is at par. While it does not help stand out especially among the highly competitive pool of Indian Engineer applicant pool, it isn't a deal breaker either. Which means academic potential is not the reason you'll get an admit to PGPX and will need a spike in at least one of the areas below.
2) Work Ex- Definitely shows potential. Unlike academics, work ex is subjective and what matters is the depth of your work ex (career progression, conscious decision making towards a long term goal, accomplishments). However, more than a check list what matters is how you choose to present your journey in the application (essays, LOR and interviews). Your work ex surely shows potential of good story telling.
3) Diversity- What do you bring to the batch that will add to the experience of your batch mates inside and outside the classroom? We tend to look at extracurricular as a check list that will help us get in, but we have to work equally hard to showcase how are these activities relevant to the B-School application. (Yes you played Guitar and Volunteered, but how are these important or relevant for the B School- if you can prove that, then these can add diversity, else not).
4) Career Goals- B Schools are looking at leaders that have a Clear and Realistic vision of their career. As long as you can show A) the long term trajectory of your career (and why do you have this long term goal), B) the short term plan (say 3 to 5 years from now what role you must work in to be able to gain enough learning and experience to transition into your long term goal) and C) how the B School will act as a stepping stone to help you land the said role and what companies are you targeting (yes that specific). The goals must be realistic too (considering your profile, background and what the school can help you achieve). You seem to have not mentioned any goals, and that makes the profile evaluation incomplete. Keep in mind your future aspirations are as much a part of your profile as your past experience.

You may want to read here on what factors work in a profile and here to add to your research on career goals.

Hello. I am a Chartered Accountant with 6+ years of work-ex. However, my graduation score was below 50%. Is it a deal breaker for IIMA PGPX? Since I am still allowed to appear for CAT on the basis of my professional qualification.
Thanks in advance.

Hi, I too am a Chartered Accountant with around 6 years of experience; and I just secured an admit in IIM-A PGPX'24. My advice to you would be to focus on building up your profile, it might outweigh your lower College grades. Would be happy to help you out further if needed!

Bhanu612, you have a pretty strong profile. Your experience lies in the range of 7-8 years, which is the sweet spot for the age profile at IIMs. Your extra curriculars are strong too. Just focus on building a good application and on writing essays which can actually convey yoir journey, and getting into IIM A/B/C will eb a cakewalk for you. I myself focused on building my profile and put efforts in penning it all down, which helped me in securing an admit at IIMA.

Hi Shrikant24 hope this gives you perspective

Recently, I got informed about a situation where an impressive candidate who worked with me was declined admission to the IIMA PGPX program due to his subpar undergraduate academic record. During the second attempt at interview, the interviewer notified the candidate about the GPA issues candidly. In light of this, my recommendation is to prioritize bolstering your profile and mitigating risks if you are considering pursuing an MBA soon. Consider achieving an outstanding GMAT score to counterbalance your academic history because IIMA PGPX is one of the most selective MBA programs.
Best wishes

Hello AryaSwagat,

You have a differentiated profile and this will prove to be advantageous for you; of course, a lot will also depend on how well you tie these to your career goals. As you have not mentioned your goals, we are unable to comment on the same.

Having said the above, while it would make sense for you to apply when you feel most ready (and a 720 on the GMAT would be great), adding another year of experience will have its own disadvantages.

All the best!

Hi AryaSwagat,

Your work experience is more than 11 years. If you appear next year, it would be 12 years. Delaying the process is not going to play in your favour even if you improve the score by 10-20 points. College admission will become tougher as your work ex increases. Also, the work that you have done in Coal India is good, but not extraordinary. There are about 20-30 candidates from Coal India itself who would be applying this year. Among those candidates, you will have to think how you will differentiate yourself?

The point that we want to highlight is that you should apply this year itself by round 2, even if GMAT is not to your liking. GMAT is a strange exam, no one believes they have reached their full potential in GMAT. Take a call judiciously. Applying with 700 this year is far better than applying with 720 next year.

Take time out of your busy schedule at CIL. Focus on your GMAT and try to get the best you can in next one month. If for some reason it doesnt turn out well, then anyways you have to wait for next year. But, if you target next year, definitely you are not qualifying this year. Why not try and fail, rather not try and wait?

Coming to your question of profile evaluation, all profiles are equal unless they are extraordinary. eg some one was in army for 10 years, someone is a state level football player etc. Your profile is not extraordinary. You will have to differentiate and highlight whatever achievements you have in your profile in a way that it sounds different and good. That you can do at appropriate time. Focus on GMAT and if possible apply round 2 this year, thats the best we can suggest for the betterment of your career.

About your question on your chances, because of higher work ex, the chances are slightly lower than most candidates, but very much there.

Hi All,

Kindly review my profile. Any suggestions or inputs are highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

GMAT - 650(Q48, V31, IR 3) - Since R2 deadlines are already around the corner, I don't think reattempt will be possible. So thinking of applying with this score.
Education - B.E in Computers with First Class(Decent college from Mumbai University), Diploma in Computer Engineering with Distinction.
Work experience - 8.5+ years
Industry - IT
Roles - Started as a software developer for around 4 years, then worked as business analyst for around 3 years, currently working as an Engagement Manager(include PMO activities, managing revenue around $50k, maintaining customer relationship) since over last 1.5 years.
Companies - Have worked in top IT services companies in India and 1 Big 4. No international experience.

Extra curriculars - Actively involved in Rotaract club throughout college years and served various board positions. This involved a lot of community service projects. Was a Core team member of the Teach For India board in one of my organization which had a tie up with TFI. Also, completed 60 hours of teaching in one of the TFI affiliated government schools in Mumbai. Helped in the installation of a new Rotaract community club and led it by serving as the President in 2020. I am very fascinated with hair and was looking for something which I could take up as a hobby. So I did a complete Hair course from a well known beauty academy. While in the middle of the course Covid struck and the classes were paused, but, I ended up doing 50-100 haircuts in covid even before I could finish my course. Also, did all the hairstyling for a Rotaract club fashion show event.

Certifications - Professional Scrum Master I & II, SAFE 5 Scrum Master

Few points to add -
-I am working on the delivery side, but recently bagged a delivery led sale worth around INR 15 lakhs ( I know the contract amount isn't that big, but thought it deserves a mention)
-Mother to a toddler

Thank you

c_r hope this finds you well

It's unfortunate that your verbal score is considerably low, despite a respectable Q48. I want to be candid with you and recommend a retake, as the odds of securing admission to IIM A from the IT sector with this score are challenging (though not insurmountable with a strong application and stellar interview performance). In cases where profiles within the IT sector are closely aligned, the GMAT score can often serve as a differentiating factor. Alternatively, you may consider taking the GRE if it can lead to an improved overall percentile compared to the GMAT.

Regarding your professional experience, I see significant potential in your profile, particularly in terms of your career progression and your engagement in intriguing extracurricular activities and passions. You didn't mention your undergraduate background, but if you graduated from a tier 1 or government college, this can positively influence the admissions committee's perception of your potential.

You haven't provided information about your career goals, and this is a critical aspect in assessing your readiness for the post-PGPX phase.
