United states is to be taken as singular.. so it has to be "it did"..and twice goes better than double.

Sentence has pronoun referent and dictation issues

(A) twice as much of its national output of goods as they had [They cannot point to Singular country – eliminate it]

(B) double the amount of their national output of goods as they did [“their” cannot point to Singular country – eliminate it]

(C) twice as much of its national output of goods as it did [hold it]

(D) double the amount of its national output of goods as it has [ Cannot refer to period in 1970 with present tense – eliminate it]

(E) twice as much of their national output of goods as they had [their cannot point to singular country – eliminate it]

Answer: C

Grammar: Singular or plural
A government, a party, a company (whether Tesco or Marks and Spencer) and a partnership (Skidmore, Owings & Merrill) are all it and take a singular verb. So does a country, even if its name looks plural. Thus The Philippines has a congressional system, as does the United States; the Netherlands does not. The United Nations is also singular.

went with C. United States is singular, so we should use 'it' instead of 'they'.

I chose C too.

-I didn't see a problem with 'twice as much'
-Pronoun It, instead of they should be used.
-did instead of had (although had is past perfect but did makes more sense to my ears)

It must be C,

Double is a verb and will not be used for comparisons.

Twice, three times ....etc are the right words that will be used for comparisons.

Others have subj-verb agreement problem.

Hi All,

If the first option would have been , (A) twice as much of its national output of goods as "it" had .
then the best answer will be A or C ??

I will still prefer (C)

Quote:

(A) twice as much of its national output of goods as it had

(C) twice as much of its national output of goods as it did

" Did " in option (C) refers to the act of Exporting , hence it is correct...

" United states " is one.
So United states is singular, right?
This basically eliminates all other options except C. We need " it " NOT " they "
In D tense is clearly wrong.
Answer C.
