(A)than in either Sweden or Finland - correct parallelism
(B)than either in Sweden or Finland - either in Sweden or in Finland is correct...
(C)than those in Sweden or Finland - increase is singular, so use of those is incorrect.
(D)than among those in either Sweden or Finland - same reason as C
(E)than it was either in Sweden or Finland - same as B

Between A and B, any good explanation on the difference between both?

Would be happy to throw some Kudos out there

In 1997 the frequency of calvings among dairy cows increased across Northern Europe; this increase was more apparent in Norway than [u]either in Sweden or Finland.

In option B, Suppose we were to remove either ... or .. construction and write the stem as two separate clauses, we would have,
This increase was more apparent in Norway than in Sweden; this is right.
This increase was more apparent in Norway than Finland; this is wrong as increase is compared with Finland.

Hope this clarifies.

In B, the absence of the preposition 'in' before Finland breaks the rule of correlative conjunction parallelism. Either in Sweden or in Finland is the correct parallel expression.

There is some error in transcription. The underlining should start from --than in—after Norway.

(A)than in either Sweden or Finland -- Correct
(B)than either in Sweden or Finland --- parallelism problem
(C)than those in Sweden or Finland --- plural –those- is wrong
(D)than among those in either Sweden or Finland --- same as in C
(E)than it was either in Sweden or Finland -- parallelism error

E)than it was either in Sweden or Finland

The Question tests the concept of parallelism.

Choice A) is the correct. The parallel tag is "either" + "or".
One should look to compare from the right hand side of the the parallel elements.

Either sweden or finland. - Correct
Either in Sweden or in Finland - Correct.
Either in sweden or finland - Incorrect.
Either sweden or in Finland - Incorrect

Choice B) Incorrect as explained above.

Choice C ) D) & E) The Correct Idiom is - More X than Y and not More X than those Y.

Parts to compare in the given sentence- Increase was more apparent in Norway than in Sweden or Finland.

A)than in either Sweden or Finland. Correct comparisons
B)than either in Sweden or Finland. wrong idiom usage. Either in X or in Y is the right idiom.
C)than those in Sweden or Finland. Those is a wrong plural referent
D)than among those in either Sweden or Finland. among those compares what to the increase?
E)than it was either in Sweden or Finland. Wrong Idiom usage.

In 1997 the frequency of calvings among dairy cows increased across Northern Europe; this increase was more apparent in Norway than in either Sweden or Finland.

My analysis is below:
Intended meaning
This sentence tries to compare the increase of frequency of calvings among cows in Norways to the increase in Sweden or Finland. It says that the increase of frequency of cow calvings was more apparent in Norway than (it was) in either Sweden or Finland.

Error analysis
No errors.
1. Parallelism: Either X or Y = Either Sweden or Finland. OK
2. Comparisson: the sentence correctly compares the apparent increase of frequency of calvings in Nowray to that of either Sweden or Finland.

(A)than in either Sweden or Finland. Correct
(B)than either in Sweden or Finland. Incorrect. Either in X or Y
(C)than those in Sweden or Finland. Incorrect. Pronoun number error.
(D)than among those in either Sweden or Finland. Incorrect. Pronoun-number error: those (increases) in - plural
(E)than it was either in Sweden or Finland. Incorrect. Either in X or Y

Hope this help!

(C) than those in Sweden or Finland

(D) than among those in either Sweden or Finland

(E) than it was either in Sweden or Finland

Official Solution (Credit: Manhattan Prep)

This sentence makes a comparison between the increase in calving rates in Norway and that in two other countries. Like all other comparisons, this one must use proper parallelism between the concepts being compared.
There is also a second layer of parallelism “nested” within the larger parallel structure: namely, the either … or construction must also be made parallel.

(A) Correct. In the larger-scale comparison, there is proper parallelism between in Norway and in either Sweden or Finland. Also, within the either-or portion, either is followed by Sweden and or by Finland, creating a properly parallel structure.

(B) The either-or construction is not parallel, as either is followed by in Sweden and or by just Finland.

(C) The pronoun those in the second part of the comparison has no antecedent. In fact, there is no plural noun at all in the first part of the comparison (“more apparent in Norway”) to which those could be parallel.

(D) The pronoun those in the second part of the comparison has no antecedent. In fact, there is no plural noun at all in the first part of the comparison (“more apparent in Norway”) to which those could be parallel. Additionally, although the phrase “among dairy cows” is indeed present in the first part of the sentence, that phrase is not included in the comparison, so it can’t be referenced in the second half of the comparison.

(E) The either-or construction is not parallel, as either is followed by in Sweden and or by just Finland.
