The passage does not explicitly mention the option of abandoning hope and looking for a way to get back to Earth as a course of action for astronauts if their assigned planet is not inhabitable. Dr. Doyle's statement, as mentioned in the passage, focuses on the bravery of the astronauts in the face of discovering that their planet is sterile. The passage does not provide information suggesting that the astronauts have the option to abandon their mission and return to Earth.

Option (D) aligns more closely with the mentioned concept of bravery in the face of sterile planets, as per Dr. Doyle's description. It reflects the difficult choices that the astronauts may have to make if they find themselves on an inhospitable planet.

Hey, Sajjad! Why can't answer of Question 3 be (E)?

(E) suggests that the astronauts did not expect to find water on Miller's planet. However, this is not accurate based on the information provided in the passage. The astronauts did indeed expect to find water on Miller's planet; they were sent there specifically to investigate whether it was habitable. Therefore, option E is not the best choice because it does not align with the context of the passage. The passage clearly states that the astronauts landed on Miller's planet expecting to find a surface, but instead, they found only water due to the intense gravitational forces from the nearby black hole. The unexpected challenge they faced was not that there was water, but rather the extreme time dilation caused by the proximity to the black hole, which they were not adequately prepared for.
