Hello everyone,
Im really interested in INSEAD's MBA program, however i have many concerns about my academic backgroud, to be more specific my undergrad
My GPA is 3.62
My GMAT score is 770
4 years of work experience in investment banking
CFA charterholder
My profile may not look bad, but my undergrad scores are really bad, even though i have a 3.62 GPA but it only happened after repeating 2 F's and 2 D's.. i have been really lazy during the first 3 semesters but I did compensate it within the last 5 semesters by scoring almost straight A's in my courses. Do the the F's and D's i have in my transcript effect my chances? Especially that in our university we were allowed to repeat upto 12 credits of courses.

How do you guys get dressed for the interviews?

When in doubt wear a suit. My first interview was a casual meeting at a local starbucks. My interviewer was in jeans and a shirt. I wore a suit. My next interview is at night -and I'm still going to wear a suit. I think it presents an air of professionalism. Also, having conducted similar interviews (as an interviewer -both for my firm and my prior graduate school) -I can confidently say that as long as your professionally dressed, it doesnt matter what you wear, but you can never go wrong with a suit.

i'd agree with that. you'd much rather be overdressed and give the impression that you care too much than the opposite.

Interview length seems to vary by interviewer. Some people have written about conversational interviews that have gone on for hours -others have talked about 30 minute formal interviews. I think the best bet is to prepare for a 30-45 minute interview. If things are going well -it may go longer depending on when and with whom you are meeting.

Hi Everyone,

New to this forum. I did my 1st interview yesterday with an 02D alum. It was pretty informal. I think one important qsn for everyone to prepare for is the short medium and long term career goal qsn. She really grilled me on that.

A Message from Dean J Cohen:

We are pleased to announce that INSEAD will now be offering our MBA students the opportunity to exchange with the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in Chicago , Illinois .

This new partnership, combined with our existing relationship with the Wharton School , provides greater choice for INSEAD students who want to spend some time in a US business school. Kellogg is an excellent school with a particularly strong reputation in Marketing. Similar to the terms of our Wharton exchange programme, students will have access to both INSEAD’s & Kellogg’s Career Services teams whilst at Kellogg.

Students will be able to exchange in their fourth period of studies (P4), with the first group of students from the Class of 10D exchanging this September and October. Being a reciprocal partnership, Kellogg MBA students will also be invited to come to INSEAD.

More information about the exchange programmes and how to apply will be provided to you once on campus.

What would their concerns be:
(1) Hmmm, this dude has some F's and D's, is this guy smart? Adcom looks at GMAT: 770, Adcom looks at avg GPA: 3.62. Check box, this dude is smart
(2) Hmmm, then why did this dude score F's and D's? Not that we care that much, but it's something you could address in your additional essay at INSEAD. Did you do other cool stuff during that period? Did you set up some business, took a leading role in student organisation, ... anything at all? :)

==> Anyway, overall, if the rest of your application is rock-solid, I seriously doubt it's going to have much impact. Your GMAT score + repeated test score compensate for the F's and D's in my opinion. Your profile indeed doesn't look too bad at first glance, though with this info you only cover the basics. You'll need more good stuff in your essays (leadership, extracurr., ...), but I'm sure you know that.

got my interviewers' contact info today.

I have started to panic since then....

if it goes wrong......

gosh.......

Relax. Do prepare well based on the questions listed above + clearadmit's website, but don't stress out. INSEAD interviews are quite relaxed, cause they're with Alumni (very relaxed in comparison to my HBS interview, the only interview I can compare with). Typically no tricky questions (like you get from adcom interviewers), interviewers do show emotion and you'll know whether they like you or not (contrary to adcom interviews). It's more of a conversational chat than a real 'grilling' interview, where they mostly try to find out whether you (1) are the same guy that wrote the application (2) are a nice, smart person that wants to go to INSEAD (remember, those people studied there and are proud of their school - they want to see that you would love to go there) and (3) whether you are not only good on paper, but are able to have a decent conversation with a senior executive.

Both my interviews were scheduled to last 1 hour, but were over in about 45 minutes. I met with both interviewers in their office, so they were busy with work and therefore, didn't have that much time to chit-chat. Interviews that take place in a cafe/pub typically last a bit longer cause of the more relaxed setting that's very inviting to 'have another drink' and chat some more, in particular when there's a good click.

Agree with Suker - interviews are very relaxed. I interviewed with HBS, Wharton and INSEAD and found the INSEAD ones by far the most relaxed (one was in the interviewer's office, the other was in a cafe near his office - but both were very laid back and informal). Basically, just know your reasons for wanting to go to INSEAD, have a clear vision of where you see yourself in 2 years, 5 years, 20 years, and articulate that vision. And enjoy it! Whether you get in or not, it's a great experience meeting with the alums and getting to hear their experiences since graduating too (both of mine had amazing career paths which they were only too happy to talk about).

I've been in touch with both of my interviewers since the interview, and they were both very keen to stay in touch going forward. All in all, the interviews hugely added to my positive impression of INSEAD and the interviewers seemed to be typical of INSEAD - very successful, but very friendly individuals.

PS: I was admitted to INSEAD starting January 2011.

Actually i think you can address it as a "lesson learnt" essay too!

Hi
I am new here. got the interview invite about 2 weeks ago but still haven't received any details yet, the date, the interviewer etc. is this normal ? :|
anyway good luck for everyone.

Apparently it varies a lot from candidate to candidate. But I would not worry, this can takes some time. You can always send an email to the mba admission team to ask...

Don't worry
My interviewer's name came 4 weeks before deadline. The second one came 2 weeks!

Hi,

I have a question. I e-mailed my interviewer and he suggested that we meet on August 19th (the day before the August 20th deadline set by Adcom). I would rather not delay my interview till then (not sure if at all it'll impact my application at all) but I still don't want to leave it till the last minute.
Any suggestions? Should I e-mail them back and ask if there is anyway to do it sooner so that its not so close to the absolute deadline.

Dude I had similiar concerns a year ago, or perhaps 6 months back when I was working on my INSEAD application, hence I can connect with your query. Good acads, and work exp, but faltered in the academic juncture for a brief bit, but came out well at the end of it..

If you have a good work experience ( preferably some international exposure), and great essays to write , I think your work exp ,GPA and GMAT score should have you covered well. I dont even think that you need to be apologetic about failing initially, because you already did well in the repeat exams and you dont need to drive your application reviews attention to something which you have already improved on . Because even if the application reviewer notices a repeat course and sees an A, it speaks well for your credentials. So many students take up on PRE MBA courses to make up for their grades, and it helps them get admitted. You already have the grades in order, so dont worry.

Again none of us know why were selected, or what makes our application tick. You will see candidates with higher GMAT scores than yours , and higher GPA, great work exp with Fortune 500 companies being rejected and someone with not a great pedigree in your eyes making it. I dont think anyone can give you a reasonable advice on whether you will make it even if you had all A's in your first attempt. At this juncture, you are competitive candidate with your scores and work exp looking equal or higher than what aplicants have at INSEAD. If you sell yourself well and have compelling reasons to join INSEAD, and can put your reasons across in words ; your a good contender. Instead of working on stories that will justify your D's and F's, research INSEAD and know why you want to be there. It will be a more fruitful endeavor in the long run. Thats my advice to you.

There seems to be some serious movement on the Dec '11 WL thread. The round one applicants that were waitlisted are being admitted while the RD2 applicants are mid-process. I think it's interesting and am not sure what, if anything, to make of it from the perspective of a RD2 applicant. What do you all think?
